gene is in his 30s, around the same age as when he revisited devon at the beginning of the book. he is married to a woman, but the marriage is not out of love; it is out of repression of his sexuality. following finny’s death, gene decided to ignore everything that he may have felt towards his best friend, instead choosing to live in shame. for this reason, gene needs a serious life check

instead of three ghosts, the only ghost that gene is visited by is the ghost of his beloved phineas (because he will never get away from the sound of the man that loved him!)

the past: finny’s ghost brings gene back to devon, focusing mostly on genefinny’s relationship, especially the fall and the jealousy on gene’s part. in order to heal, gene has come face to face with himself and his past behavior

the present: gene’s marriage. he is hurting his wife by continuing to stay with her, and he is hurting himself by pretending to be happy. repression did not get him anywhere in the past, and it will not get him anywhere now

the future: if gene cannot find it within himself to move on from his mistakes and live truthfully, he will never be fulfilled. he will spend his days rotting away, forever wallowing in guilt

this is reopening old wounds for kat, shes too anxious/worried to sleep so she calls her big sister

After the test:

They're all traumatized by the summer of 95

It wasn't all painful tho, in this AU Kat underwent chemo and Nora visited her everyday in the hospital (Her hair is short cuz they all cut it all off for Kat)

Kat survived but it was traumatizing

after the surgery:
