“Oh, that’s great!”

It never occurred to him that they could do that. He remembered David’s complaining about how universities didn’t always accept the Xavier school as a valid place of learning, and even if they did, that they viewed students who came from it as lesser.

“What are you studying?” A pause, he gives an apologetic look, realizing that maybe this is something he should know if she’s this far into her studies. “I’m kind of out of the loop. No social media.”

“Psychology.” 

She’d always been the kind to help wherever she could, but she wanted to step back from the action packed life of being an X-Man. Psychology was one way to do that. If she could help people, especially young mutants who may not have the mental health options that humans did, then everything was worth it.

“There aren’t many psychologists who specialize in mutant experiences.” She would know. “I want to change that and be able to help who I can.” She smiles softly. “Probably not a bad idea, a lot of it is so stressful.”

“Oh, you know. Keeping busy. Um… How about you?”

The years had been - well, not kind to him - but one wouldn’t know from the easy smile he puts on.  The best thing about being biokinetic is that you don’t have to show the wear and tear if you don’t want to. And Josh never wants to. Sleepless dark circles are banished, though the fatigue in his mind remains.It’s only the scruffiness of his clothes and the hollowness of his wallet that gives that away. 

But this, he tells himself, is a choice. He does more good out here than he ever did anywhere else.

“Back to student life for me. Only, it’s university now. I’m working towards my PhD.”

College life actually felt welcoming. A return to structure and form, surrounded by over a thousand faces where she could easily lose herself in the shuffle. Style her hair the right way, wear longer sleeves, the obvious cracks in  her skin could get lost. It was also comforting not having to worry about multiple attacks on the campus in a month’s span. But she missed the faces here too much at times.

She thinks to how old Jay would be; he would have graduated by now.

     “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to - I think I accidentally -”

Paige’s face scrunches up, it was really hard to keep herself from getting emotional about it. 

    “Accidentally what?”

       so many new faces and faces she vaguely remembered were wandering the halls of the school. it was refreshing, almost like a normal school with normal school problems. it probably wouldn’t last long but she’d enjoy it while she could. she was only there to help jubilee get something situated, having her morning coffee, when she ran sofia... literally.  ❝ oh gosh! are you okay? ❞

“Oh, um…”

For a moment, he expects the usual. Someone desperately in need of a healing touch, someone down on their luck, someone with sick friends or family, or worse, someone from the old life trying to pull him back in. 

And then he recognizes her.

Not as her, not at first. He sees the familiarity, the trademarks of all the Guthrie siblings, and feels his heart constrict painfully.

“Miss Guthrie. Hi…”

“Yeah, or Paige. If that’s easier.”

She prefers familiar terms. They can call her doctor once she finishes her degree and even then she might correct them. It’s easier to talk to someone on familiar terms, when formalities don’t constantly trip you up.

It makes talking to faces she hasn’t seen since the funeral easier.

She relaxes her posture a bit, shifting in her flats as she offers an easy smile. No need to make a second encounter painful.

     a friend. monet knew damn well she could certainly use one right now. she’d released the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding and motioned for paige to join her on the couch. 

    ❛ thanks. ❜ guthrie. she had half a mind not to, part of her wanted to remain bitter, push people away. pull a monet as some had called it to properly not only distance herself from others so she couldn’t hurt them again, but because it was easier to push people away than to see them leave her willingly. but she didn’t. this was paige being paige, kind and good natured and she could use that influence. could benefit from that influence. so that simple six lettered word came out softly, nearly just a breath with consonants. 

    she sat there quietly, unsure how to react. how to respond all while thinking and even considering maybe it would be just better for them both if monet did approach her or better yet requested a referral for a therapist. because it certainly wasn’t ethical for paige nor would she want to burden the blonde with her problems given the severe nature of the situation and the affect it has on her. her nightmares, inability to sleep, her constant intrusive thoughts and vivid visions. it would be better… but maybe just not now.

   monet folds her hands into each other, considering what to say. she’s exhausted, tired, beyond just merely physically or mentally. this was all taking a toll on her emotionally as well. but despite paige’s recent improvements, she couldn’t simply burden the other with those thoughts. ❛ i appreciate it. ❜ she does. truly she does, somebody simply just existing in her space without judgement is more than she feels she may deserve right now.

    they’d been through quite a bit in the years since graduation, hadn’t they? little of it has been good. there were moments, but something always came up or happened to remind them this was something they’d never escape.

    ❛ of course. ❜ but there is a heavy silence as paige went to sit next to the slightly older mutant. monet always had a certain air about her. haughty at times, but there was never any doubt that they were friends through all of it. they all had their ways of expressing things. though pain was usually kept hidden. that was a problem they all shared. this, however, was painfully exposed even if others couldn’t see it. they’d known each other long enough for subtleties to be not so subtle. she mentally shook the thought, reminding herself she was there as a friend. she’d help only if monet asked. monet was too proud to accept it otherwise.

    while things had been going much better for herself in the last few months, she couldn’t help but feel pangs for monet. she’d been through so much and she knew monet would not be happy if she made a big deal out of it. so she didn’t. she sat, waiting for monet to speak, if she chose to. if she didn’t that was fine too. they could sit in silence. but she was certain the silence wouldn’t last long.

    ❛ any time. so, ❜ she started out tentatively. this was harder than she thought. monet wasn’t giving much and her lips pursed up a bit in response.  ❛ i feel so out of the loop on everything. we’ve hardly had any time at all to talk after... well, all that. ❜ smooth, guthrie.

Laurie looks down at her hands. She tries to blink back tears and… and FAILS to rein in her pheromones. 

     “He was my teammate. I miss him.”

Paige can feel her own tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. This is not how this was supposed to go at all.

    “We all do. We all do.”

     “If you’re sure.”

Laurie walks into the room and sits in an empty chair, nodding at the mention of tea.

    “You like sweat tea too? Jay used to drink so much of it, I swear he -”

She stops.

     “I- I’m sorry. I didn’t mean -”

    “Of course, I’m sure.”

Paige was already pouring the tea when she stops at Laurie’s words. It’d been a while, but it still feels like a stab when she hears his name sometimes.

   “       it’s a Guthrie thing. We were raised on it.”

She's learned not to dwell on it. It only makes it worse.

    “It’s alright. Not like we can’t say his name. Were you two close?”

      “Um - Yes. I’m Laurie. Thank you for seeing me, Miss Guthrie.”

Laurie looked at the taller woman, chewing on her lower lip.

She looked a lot like Jay.

     “Uh. Miss Lee said you could give me some advice…?”

   “Of course. Any way I can help, I will. And you can just call me Paige.”

She knew that look, even if she didn’t know Laurie.

She got that a lot after Jay died.

    “Absolutely. You can go ahead and have a seat. Do you want tea? I got tea, it’s sweet, of course.”
