Welcome to the Ranger Gathering, coming August 2025!

Despite how quiet this account has been this year, the Gathering is still being held! We invite you to take a look at the prompts below.

How it works:

The Ranger Gathering will run for the entire the month of August, 2025. Each day has a prompt that participants can use to inspire works about Ranger's Apprentice, The Early Years, The Royal Ranger, or Brotherband.

First explorations for Crowley!

\ I love to think that he grew his mustache over the very many years bcs its funny and Halt said he looks ridiculous- and now keeps it bcs hes grown fond of it

\\ also i think that instead of him doing like traditional workouts for keeping in shape like other rangers he trains with the soldiers as a way to keep up his health so hes bulkier than other rangers, but less agile bcs of his routine. And bcs it contrasts nicely with Halt

Ok I know we all criticize Flannagan for how he writes women, and rightfully so, but I just read The Roamers short story and YIKES.

From the blatant stereotyping to having Will participate in the ongoing oppression of the Roamers it was all bad. Flannagan even notes several times that the Roamers face difficulties because they are often mistrusted and driven out of places before they can make any money and then the triumphant ending is Will banishing them from the feif and threatening to use his connections to make sure they are unwelcome and reviled everywhere they go unless they leave the country. Yikes.

We're supposed to feel good about this because they hurt his dog, a crime in fiction that there's almost no way to make readers forgive. But also Will did literally nothing to the Aruleans who were 100% planning on attending that dogfight. Like he didn't even question them about it get them arrested for illegal gambling. But when it's the Roamers we have to actively make sure that every last one of them is punished and driven out of the country. And just for good measure we're going to beat up a child (Don't worry. It's okay because he was evil)

At least when we went to Japan and the Middle East we made an attempt at not depicting minorities as a monolith but the Roamers get none of that. Every single one of them is evil and mean and awful. And the only one who isn't terrible? Don't worry she's not really a Roamer. She's just a Gallacian who the Roamers treat like a slave.

It was so bad. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone criticize it before? Maybe I have and just don't remember since I hadn't read The Lost Stories yet. But it is so so so bad. Yikes doesn't even begin to cover it but YIKES

I can't remember if I've mentioned this before already but how do y'all think Halt would have been after Crowley died? Like how mentally fucked up would he have been and how would he have responded to it?

Do you think he would've cried and if he did would he have done it in front of people like Pauline or Will? Do you think he would have just gotten quieter afterwards, or more distant, or more angry or something else while trying to cope?

Just how hard and how long do y'all think he would have taken to move on from it because Crowley's death would have fucked him up a lot

I’ve been thinking about how seeing snow for the very first time since getting back from Skandia must have been a pretty emotionally complex experience for Will (especially if, let’s say, he liked snow before). And I’ve been (yet again) getting frustrated with how little the trauma of everything that’s happened to him (and at such a young age!!!) has actually been explored in the books, let alone the nuances of it. So, yeah, if he broke down a little at the sight of something reminding him of how his youth/innocence has been ripped away from him far too soon, I wouldn’t blame him and I’m sure Halt wouldn’t either.
