As conveyed throughout the tumblr music has clearly played an important role in my life in general. I’m the type of person who constantly has music playing. Almost every time I enter my room music is playing the entire time until I go to bed or leave my room. This has been one of my favorite final projects because of my love and appreciation for music and the impact it has had on my life and my perspective. When I fist started compiling song options for the playlist I ended up with 100+ songs so you can imagine the struggle I experienced when attempting to widdle the list down to 18 songs. While I couldn’t possibly include every artist I was hoping to the impact that black artists have had on my life is incredible and something I will value for the rest of my life.

I chose this song last because while it may have been introduced to me earlier in my life it is timeless and I feel that Nas plays an important role today through the messages he coveys in his music. I remember as a kid my dad never wanted us listening to rap music because of the explicit content. I remember one of our babysitters driving us home and  a song came on and I sat in the back seat plugging my ears. I had a lot to learn!

Drake is up there with Lil Wayne for me and was an artist that played a large role in my collection throughout high school and continues to this day. The evolution of Drake’s music style has made it easy to follow and easy to love him along the way. This stands out as one of my favorite songs by him but his collection in my music library is vast.

Kanye is a classic and had too much for me to choose an all time favorite. Kanye has been apart of my music collection since middle school so my exposure to his music and growth in the industry is quite vast. The other song I  was contemplating using was The Glory which is another one of my favorites but I decided on this one because of my love and appreciation for the album and the other artists included on the track. This album was a staple in my music collection throughout my last two years of high school. During this time I spent a lot of time figuring out who I was and this while some of the songs on the album are a little heavy I found a lot within the album. Some of my other favorites include Devil In a New Dress and Lost in the world.

Wale is one of my favorite rappers. This song along with The Matrimony, The Breeze Cool, The Friends Strangers, etc are some of his best in my opinion. He has incredible mixtapes and has an incredible voice that is so easy to listen to. While this song is a little heavier than others it will always be one of my favorites.

Lil Wayne is probably the rap artist to which I have listened the most. I went to one of his concerts and it was an experience I will never forget. While it may have been with the most random group of friends I had the time of my life. Another story that will always come to mind when I think of Lil Wayne is the summer that my cousin and I worked at the marina at our lake house. One day we were cleaning and old boat to be resold and found a scratched Tha Carter II CD in the player. For the rest of the summer it was one of the main CDs we listened to, scratches and all.

I chose to include 2Pac and Notorious side by side based on my exposure to them around the same time. I found that both artists came into my during a sort of rebellious time in my life or a period where I was maybe breaking away from a stereotype and wanted to do something different. This song especially taught me a lot about a life I was so unfamiliar with. While I may not be able to relate to growing up in Compton I have the strongest relationship with my Mom and know she would do anything in the world for any of her children so that aspect definitely struck a cord with me.

When I think about my exposure and appreciation for Rap and HipHop I often think about Notorious as one of my key influencers within the genre. He played a key role in introducing me to the struggle, violence, and world that was HipHop culture in the ‘90s.

Miguel is one of my favorite R&B/Soul artists so Adorn and Sure Thing are two of my favorite songs. He has an all around great voice and is very easy to listen to. Something interesting that I learned about him was his strong influence by James Brown. To me, this reveals a lot about his style of music and its creation through learning about his inspiration behind it.

John Legend is another classic staple to our music collection at home. My relationship with John Legend’s music is strong and will forever remind me of home. I have always been told that I have an old soul and have always gotten along better with people who are older than me. Sometimes I feel like the people around me aren’t necessarily like me or at the same place in life as I am. Through my relationship with music I have found a sense of understanding and a sense of hope for the future. I was also strongly influenced by John Legends depiction of love through his music.

Earth, Wind and Fire are one of my parents all time favorite artists so their music reminds me a lot of my childhood. It’s happy feel good music that brings back summer nights and wedding or fun nights with my whole family. I will forever be grateful for the influence my parents’ great taste in music had on me.

Bob Marley is another artist that my dad and I listened to a lot during my travel soccer days. We also have a lot of Bob Marley on the rotation on our vacation playlists so it reminds me of a lot of the trips we would take. One in particular is our trip we took to Jamaica. We listened to a lot of Bob over this trip and learned a lot about the culture. His music was a big insight for me of the struggle of the black culture.

As a kid I played travel soccer and my dad was always the one to drive me to all of my games. We bonded a lot over these drives and one of the big ways was through the music we listened to. Depending on the weekend we would always have a CD playing on repeat for the weekend and one of the artists we listened to a lot was Marvin Gaye. He is one of my all time favorite black artists and Ain’t That Peculiar along with I’ll Be Doggone, Ain’t Nothin Like the Real Thing, and Too Busy Thinking About My Baby will always be some of my favorite classics.

I also listened to a lot of R&B/Soul at home. One of my parents favorites was Al Green so we listened to a lot of him around the house. Let’s Stay Together will always be such a good feel good song.

When I think about Motown classics this song definitely comes to mind as one of my favorites. I love the classic quote “I’d rather live in his world, than live without him in mine”. This is another series of music that helped create the outlook I have on love to this day.
