Beyoncé Arc Theory: part i
Like everybody else Ive been on a journey to discover and learn from Beyoncé’s forthcoming trilogy act. Since the release of the first act, Renaissance, I have done as Beyoncé encouraged. Focus. On. The. Music. Both Renaissance and Cowboy Carter have been a mantra in my life to seek personal liberation and breaking free from societal constraints, while honoring community.
Now, as much as I love the music, I cant help but to be a student of Beyoncé’s artistry. I have followed her career as a fan, a music lover, overall patron of the arts. I’ve learned so much about music and developing an ear for genres, instruments, and melodies, but also history in general. A Beyoncé listening experience is a lesson of its own. Through her long career I would respectfully assume that her art is cyclical and the thematic elements thread the narrative of her life.
With that being said let’s get into The first part of Beyoncé’s Arc Theory and what I think she is teaching in this three act project.
————-
Lemonade and Cowboy Carter: Interconnected
American Requiem
“Nothin' really is
For things to stay the same, they have to change again
Hello, my old friend”
As I’ve mentioned before Beyoncés work is cyclical, meaning all lot of her performances and creative works have been referenced in one way or another, weaving together a series of chapters and phases in her life and career. How this relates to the three act project has been proven to span across many years of her career, but in relation to the trilogy storyline, my idea of Cowboy Carter potentially being the last act only makes sense if she is going to end in a place of reflection or resolution after the upheavals dating back to Lemonade and the story continuing with a prequel followed by Renaissance.
In 2016, Beyoncé released Lemonade, a 12 song album that was raw and a personal chapter dealing with betrayal, growth and resilience. After revisiting this album and making connections between themes and the genre (Country) itself, it shows the early struggles or experiences would eventually lead to the seasoned perspectives of Cowboy Carter. Like lemons, when they are harvested we come across ones that are sweet, and some so sour. In regard to the trilogy lemons and lemonade is about developing resilience and adaptability over time. It’s like a mindset or skill set that allows you to keep finding opportunities in hardship, so no matter what life throws at you, you can always figure out a way to “sweeten” the experience.
Lemonade was also a public-faced response to relational drama it was dark, expansive and a noir undercut that was reflective of complexities in womanhood and in love. Whereas Cowboy Carter embraces her emotional and artistic evolution, but still showcasing the many facets of her identity and the duality of dark and light which is often seen in her costumes when she intentionally wearing black and white.
This duality is also evident musically. Lemonade and Cowboy Carter both are synonymous in their respective roles as celebration and constraints in her personal journey toward independence, healing in her relationship, and defiance in a world as a Black American, a woman especially.
Cowboy Carter, as she mentions is a Beyoncé album, a broader perspective of who she is and where she comes from. She’s is an artist who appreciates cultures and preserves heritage. Her Texan, and Louisianan roots have been influential in her her storytelling dating back to her early years but most recognizable in music from Lemonade and Cowboy Carter. Lemonade was a dip into self discovery and straying from popular music. Although the album was well received by many, country listeners, specifically those who engage with the CMA’s thought differently. Im sure many of us are familiar with the backlash, but if you aren’t a quick search will explain it all. The critique she was given was another example of lemons. Beyoncé has long proven (which she never had to do) her family history and ties to western culture. So what does Ms. Petty, I mean Beyoncé do? Create Lemonade.
Cowboy Carter is an album that is loaded with symbolism. The American flag and other paraphernalia was controversial for some but as I see it, it represents identity, ownership, and allegiance on a national, personal, or ideological basis. The songs on the album are a nuanced approach to Americanism, but the narrative is hers and as I see it she or her music won’t be bound by conventional or oppressive definitions.
The farewell Beyoncé leave us with in Cowboy Carter is an understanding of herself. Through the journey of the music I see her as student and teacher. It's not just personal, it's also aspirational and community oriented.
I believe she gave us this body of work at this time to encourage others to rise with her. A pivotal moment within this theory I’ve put together is the announcement she posted after the Beyoncé Bowl. She is seen on a white horse waving a flag. I believe there is a possibility is that it represents a turning point or a shift in allegiance with America and might be her way of asserting her own version of freedom. In her personal life I see it as a symbol that she no longer stands in pressures and she is reclaiming agency. The teaser cutting to the date is an action when she takes ownership of her story. Thus taking us back to how the awakening began.
——
Amen
Say a prayer for what has been
We'll be the ones that purify our father's sins
American Requiem
Them old ideas
Are buried here
Amen
Some symbols that I found that connect these narratives are briefly identified below:
1. Darkness & illumination
Playing with darkness and light in her body of work feels so intentional, considering how light and dark are often used as metaphors for a personal journey. In Love Drought, she sings the line "I spend my life in the dark for the sake of you and me" and it feels like there is a loss of self, where she's so committed to the relationship that she willingly hides parts of herself or dimming her own light. Darkness as a backdrop for both Acts translates the idea of not rejecting the darkness, but rather uses it to contrast and amplify her light. This idea can also amplify and unify all the different "characters" she's explored in her music over the years, finally coming together into one identity. This also shows up in costuming and how she intentionally styles herself for appearances and performances.
2. Lemonade Football Field = Beyoncé Bowl
Beyoncé is seen posed in a cradled ball on a football field in the Lemonade visuals. Whereas the Beyoncé Bowl she is seen standing and uplifted off the ground. This imagery feels full circle in a way. White again feels like a kind of resurrection or a fresh start maybe even a callback to that Lemonade moment, but now with more empowering energy.
3. Stage (Pray You Catch Me, Amen, & Renny too!)
Beyonce's teasers have play-like, vibes, and suggests that she might be embracing a more controlled, or intimate form of performance, almost like a live theater or classic film experience. The minimalism of the sets & the framing, allow her to emphasize emotion and expression in a way that feels more personal, without the distractions of large-scale production. The play-like structure might even reflect a kind of emotional and psychological development, with her character moving through different "acts" of self-realization, love, pain, and empowerment.
4. Character = Femme Fatale in Westerns & Film Noir’s + Pam Anderson in Barb Wire
It's as if each act of this trilogy is tied to a specific persona that Beyonce wants to explore. She’s both reclaiming and redefining these roles. She's playing with the idea of being all of these things at once, and it feels like each character is a different layer of the woman she's becoming, or has always been. The Western vibe in Cowboy Carter might not just be about embracing a specific genre or aesthetic, it could be a symbol of her personal journey toward independence, strength, and defiance. The dark apparel accompanied with black & white visuals are a nod to Film Noirs which is just brilliant if shes reclaiming power, she has to be seductive and attractive too!
6. Vehicles (Lemonade truck, cop cars + old schools, Taxi, school buses, 18-wheelers)
The vehicles are a tool for personal agency and a cultural symbol deeply rooted in history and resistance. In Lemonade Beyonce is seen smashing windows of cars, using it as a prop for assertion of power, transition, and transformation, her usage of buses symbolize the collective power and community that complement the themes of resistance and unity she’s trying to achieve. As the story continues to unfold the vehicles become more interesting. The choice of an 18-wheeler inspired by Japanese culture is showing the immense power and brightness of the delicacy; it’s about durability and grit of the journey. Lastly, Beyonce drives a taxi through this dust town in the teaser could symbolize a painful past that she’s leaving behind. Driving away from it shows a movement toward healing or empowerment. And by standing on top of a car (like during the Beyoncé Bowl performance), she’s asserting control, almost as if the vehicle is now the stage for her triumph.
7. Lemons and Roses (Beyonce Bowl car, My Rose (single), Amen lyric video)
The "lemons" are symbolic of the sour, painful experiences of betrayal and heartbreak, particularly tied to infidelity. The album explores themes of anger, vulnerability, healing, and empowerment. The "roses" in this context represent a blossoming of self-love, strength, and acceptance, where Beyoncé moves from pain into a place of personal and emotional growth. Additionally a reclamation of her personal strength but also a kind of public rebirth or moment of celebration. Roses are often associated with love and beauty but with thorns, it ties in beautifully with her narrative of overcoming trials and finding & beauty even in hardship.

How does fashion fit together in my life and the world?
Our personal narratives are often shaped by the style choices we make. The relationship we have with fashion, and how it intersects with materialism and self-expression, is something I’m eager to explore and share with you.
Fashion encompasses a variety of elements, including functionality, influence, style, and silhouette. At its core, the connection between fashion and personal identity is a dynamic reflection of who we are, constantly evolving. Recently, I’ve been reflecting on these elements and observing my own aesthetic. I’ve noticed patterns emerging in my wardrobe that offer insight into my preferences. At the same time, I’ve set goals to enhance my wellness and elevate my style.
I’ve created a vision board to organize my findings. On a broader scale, it includes inspiration and research, while on an personal level I am gathering information that fosters deeper, more immersive experiences that target sensory perception (sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch). I refer to these elements as “groupings,” which I find helpful as I continue to discover and refine my fashion identity.
Below I have added a style manifesto sheet and style vision board templates. By using vanity mirrors as the main element, the vision board not only reflects your current style but also invites ongoing transformation, as it encourages self-exploration and personal growth. This template will allow you to to see yourself in the context of your own evolving journey and express their uniqueness in a creative way. I have the analysis/challenge to begin at the beginning of the year and end at the start of the Spring season! Remember slow progress is still progress. Time is on our side and our manifestations are results that we give power to.
If you need a little more guidance like myself I asked Chat Gpt to describe my style based on some looks I have saved on my “Mirror Looks” highlight on IG! Here’s what it says:
1. **Cleavage & Peek-a-Boo Details**: These suggest that your style is confident and embraces sensuality. You may enjoy outfits that balance between being alluring and tasteful, incorporating cutouts or plunging necklines to add intrigue while still keeping things sophisticated.
2. **Pink**: This color often conveys femininity, sweetness, and sometimes fun or flirtation. Depending on the shade of pink, it can also signal a sense of boldness (bright or neon pink) or a softer, more romantic vibe (pastel pink). Pink in your wardrobe could suggest you like a playful or feminine aesthetic.
3. **Silver Accessories**: Silver is sleek and modern, often associated with a futuristic or chic vibe. It’s more understated compared to gold, but still adds a sense of refinement and glam to an outfit. You may lean towards accessories that are shiny, eye-catching, and complement your overall look without overwhelming it.
4. **Costume Accessories**: Incorporating costume accessories indicates that you might enjoy experimenting with fantasy or theatrical elements in your outfits. Whether it's large statement jewelry, playful hats, or other fun pieces, this suggests you don't shy away from making a statement and enjoy adding personality to your look.
5. **Body Oil**:
Using body oil suggests a focus on skin and sensuality, giving off a polished, glowing appearance. It aligns with your style being both glamorous and luxurious, emphasizing self-care and indulgence. It indicates that you want to appear radiant, smooth, and well-maintained, which is likely an important part of how you carry yourself.
6. **Vanilla and Caramel Fragrances**:
These scents evoke warmth, sweetness, and comfort. Vanilla and caramel are often associated with indulgence and sensuality. These fragrances complement your overall aesthetic—soft, sweet, and inviting, yet with a deeper richness that adds complexity. Your choice of fragrance indicates that you like to leave a lasting impression that’s comforting and alluring.
Overall Style
You likely gravitate towards a combination of bold, statement-making pieces with a dash of fun and glam. Your style may be flirtatious and feminine, with touches of theatricality that make it stand out. This could be perfect for night-outs, parties, or occasions where you want to express confidence and individuality.
I am excited to begin working through this style journey and complete my style analysis within the next couple of months. I know through the research and planning it will make me a more conscious and excited “stylist” moving forward!

2024 Celebrity Halloween Costume Wishlist.. or predictions idk!
If you know you know, I take Halloween very seriously. I love brisk weather, the decorations, seeing the kids trick or treat, but most importantly the costumes. Whether you assemble a simple, yet curated outfit based on certain characters and occupations or referencing iconic memes and pop culture moments like my 2020 Yung Miami costume I am always floored by everyone’s creativity!
However, when it comes to the celebrities and influencers I dont expect anything to be half done. I always appreciate celebrities who go above and beyond like hiring a production team to fully commit to the holiday. If you’ve been following me long enough I have posted a list of costumes certain celebrities should be. Maybe posting it again will conjure some type of wish spell and they will fulfill my dream.

2024 F/W Mood Board
Last year I curated a report on Summer 2024 fashion projections. I was pleased that my research was foreseeable! So I want to continuously challenge myself to research and analyze fashion that reflects the current economic climate and cultural landscape. I’m excited to share my style forecast for the F/W 2024 season.

High Femme
This isn't a written piece about a new niche aesthetic to adapt but an insight into the High Femme woman and the personal relationship they have with their wardrobe. This is an emphasis on how stylish women are intentional with shopping and how their timeless pieces reflect contemporary standards. A High Femme woman also has the behavioral patterns of woman who doesn’t play it safe.
I believe any resourceful woman can adapt the traits of a High Femme woman. Our relationship with fashion begins with self expression. How we view ourselves, whether flamboyant or neat and minimal I believe that it is important to invest in well structured and maintained pieces. I can argue that this is one of the reasons so many fashion girls are into archival fashion.
Archive marketplaces (a personal fave of mine is Yuri's Market) have seen a surge in popularity over the past couple of years due to the fascination with historical contributions. Legacy designer brands like Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Dior, known for their unique designs and incredible craftsmanship, have made their vintage pieces highly coveted. The adventure of finding these exclusive pieces is something that excites consumers like myself. It's a rush to source a piece and a desire to showcase our outfits like fine art, standing out from the fast fashion bots, no shade.
These pieces are not just to be admired, they are meant to be reimagined. We should be far- reaching for fashion and fun! One woman who has been doing just that, weaving together a unique collection of vintage and new designs, is JT. She has crafted the most intricately ornamented character of herself as an entertainer, inspiring us to unleash our creativity and have fun with fashion.
Her style is reminiscent of other iconic figures like Rihanna, luxury buyer Lori Hirshleifer, style icon Tracee Ellis Ross, and the late muse Isabella Blow. They all exude the attitude of a High-Femme woman, unapologetically bold and flamboyant. They are the epitome of the 'all in or none at all' type of girl. In a world where everyone is demure, they choose to be flashy. They show us that over-accessorizing and layering is never too much, and bare legs aren't just brave; they're chic. She is HIGH maintenance because a little puff never hurt anybody either. Long Live The Divas!

Clean Girl, That Girl, Strawberry Girl, and It Girl are just a few distinctive titles girls and women organize for a sense of community on social media. The ‘[blank] girl’ subculture aesthetic has become a popular tool to promote individual interest and attract community and viewership, mostly on TikTok, but it has introduced a new technique for celebrity/influencer brands to expand their influential marketing.
In the past, subcultures were defined by people who felt disconnected from societal norms and responded by creating organized groups with dominant culture given by the name, style, and taste in music, and often showing resistance in some type of way. More recently, the definition of subculture has evolved, introducing a new concept called namecore, which is defined by trends and commercialized strategies to appeal to the audience. Although the idea of micro-cultures is not a new phenomenon, social media has amplified the context, making it more of an investment to be recognized as an aspirational character for a sense of romanticism of humanity or motivation for wellness techniques. For example, the best content creators of the Clean Girl aesthetic have the top dollar steam machine, shipped grocery service, and have achieved the form of looking ‘clean’ which is the way you style your hair, the sandwich method of wardrobe styling, makeup that highlights your features, topped with a signature fragrance (bonus points if you mix 2)!
Image has long been a part of a subculture lexicon. Still, titles like Clean Girl, Soft Girl, and even It Girl can narrow down the look of a group of people to one aesthetic when, in reality, groups of individuals belonging to a sub-society expand the monoculture landscape. As I reflect on the contexts of popular trends and brand identities I believe they are still important because they are inspired by the voices and various expressions of girls and women. They can hold space for beliefs and interests to exist without limitations. With artistic vision the girl who you are and aspire to be is somewhere out there, and there is space for you to create your own curated aesthetic for you and your community.
