about HYDRA, the covenant, and the nature of evil. 

evil. listen, i do not condone evil. i do not condone anything evil people do. however, i UNDERSTAND why some people might think their evil things are justified, and lauren certainly does. she believes she is TOTALLY justified. and is fueled by hatred. FILLED with hatred. and i present her here for your use as a PLOT POINT, or something to MOTIVATE your character to do GOOD, because conflict? is kind of the point. :D thank you for your understanding.

The only child of Senator George Reed and his wife Olivia, Lauren was born in the United States, but raised and educated in England, per her mother's insistence. America, for Lauren as a child, was never quite home, always the land of vacations and an overly indulgent father. She was never quite British, but never American, a sense of duality that made her easier to mold when her mother's masters came a-callin. 

Her mother, a spy in her own right with the Covenant, the broadly criminal face of HYDRA before it's reemergence, ensured that Lauren received all the training she would need before she even applied for the CIA's Academy, at the Farm. She was top of her class, and was primed to be a world class field agent, until her father quashed both her plans- and her mother's, and the Covenant's. Ensuring that Lauren would never be given field agent status to protect her from a world he thought too dangerous for his precious girl.

Instead, Lauren was shuffled into the United States National Security Council, trapped by tedium and meetings and note taking, valued for her insight but rarely given much chance to share it. It did, however, provide her an excellent cover when her mother's masters came to her, delighted with her level of access. Aggravated at her dreams being cut short, and angry with her father, she gleefully turned full traitor. She fed the Covenant classified data, and when ordered to, did whatever was asked of her, falling back on her mother's lessons, locking away any emotions she might still have hoped to cling to, executing her missions with no sense of remorse or guilt.

But things might have changed, could have changed, when she was assigned to seduce and marry an agent of the CIA, Michael Vaughn. Once her task was accomplished, and Lauren and Michael settled in marital bliss, it seemed as though Lauren's masters fell silent. No missions came, no requests for information. It was a long several years, and Lauren actually became...comfortable.

And then came the return of Michael's lost love, and the revelation that SHIELD was heavily being run by HYDRA, who were also the force behind the Covenant. Lauren managed to maintain her cover, but barely, and scrambling to keep her target from sliding back into a relationship with his ex while managing the flood of new missions and assignments, was enough to make anyone snap. 

Eventually, HYDRA even ordered her to murder her father in a bid to elicit sympathy from her straying target/husband. When she couldn't pull the trigger on the man who had barely been more than the occasional CandyMan in her youth, her mother pulled it for her. And it worked, for a little bit. But...

Of course, then, everything blew up. Cover blown, now known to be a spy for HYDRA, deeply embedded in the NSC with dangerously high levels of access to the CIA, both agents, facilities and files, her husband and his ex lead a team to hunt Lauren down. But the Covenant, and her mother, with help from some of the upper echelon of HYDRA ensured that a woman was killed, who was enough like Lauren to trick even the man who had shared a bed with her for years, and even he couldn't tell the difference. Not able to admit that they'd allowed such infiltration lest they lose the faith of the public the way SHIELD had, the CIA and the NSC agreed to bury Lauren's "death", locking the body of the woman they'd killed in a secret vault, and simply pretending she had never happened.

Which left Lauren trapped but free. A shadow, now, but with every ounce of her skill intact, she continues to work for the Covenant. With her "death", her husband was free to marry again, and murdering both him, his wife, and their obnoxious little girl is Lauren's personal endgame, but in the meantime, the Covenant surviving, even as their overlords fall, focused as intently as possible on tracking down relics of a 15th century mystic named Milo Rambaldi has become Lauren's driving purpose. Although not a believer, herself, anything that means a win for the Covenant and a loss for the CIA, the United States government, and the fragile remnants of SHIELD is good in Lauren's book.

the best part of lauren is that like lol none of y’all have seen alias. so i can do whatever with her. don’t get me wrong, i intend to keep 99% of her canon. all i’m shifting is that the covenant is one arm of hydra. but otherwise...it actually broadens the idea of the mcu world if we start factoring in broadly reaching criminal organizations BEYOND groups like hydra. there’s messes happening all over, and big, nasty groups just as dangerous as any other out there. gives our heroes more to fight. ehehehe.

obviously i’ve got like 8000000 things to figure out, the covenant being a slight branch of hydra in the same sort of way as whitehall’s little experiments, so on. a more openly criminal branch, that funds research into rambaldi, versus study into inhumans, etc. i mean, it fits. and lauren being related to a senator, head of numerous committees, herself part of nsc, and working with the cia as a double agent. :D :D so easy to slide her right in and lauren is amazing and so evil. so so evil.
