How to stand out as a Virtual Assistant
Long gone are the days of people working for a single company, business, or organization for their entire professional lives as freelance work becomes increasingly common in many fields. In the US, for example, around 35 percent of people worked as freelancers in 2019, a 5 percent increase since 2014.
As this kind of work becomes a larger piece of the economy, it’s vital for freelancers to know how to stand out.
How to stand out as a Virtual Assistant
Here are the Top 6 tips that will help you stand out as a Virtual Assistant:
1. Word Processing skills
Word Processing may be a basic virtual assistant task that's nearly always done by virtual assistants and is never overlooked. For example, typing and data entry is not only about writing or typing 80-100 words per minute but also ensuring that the work is 100% accurate.
2. Oral Communication and Writing skills
One must be ready to communicate effectively with his/her clients both verbal and thru writing whether you're working for a virtual assistant company or managing your own virtual assistance business. If you think that you simply are sluggish in your writing skills, signing up for a web course would be an honest parameter to gradually improve.
Communication is definitely the key!
3.  Computer skills
All VA tasks are through with the utilization of a computer, so one must have proficient computer skills. This should include literacy in spreadsheet programs. Programs like Microsoft Word and Excel are the fundamentals of doing virtual assistant tasks. In addition to this, the knowledge on the internet or the World Wide Web is also very important. Advanced internet skills can also be needed if the client requires maintenance and support for his business website or database system.
4. Self Motivation and Discipline
Getting out of bed on time and getting oneself ready for work should be a discipline. You need to set a specific time to start and finish the work. As Parkinson's law says that "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". It is best to avoid the things that could get in the way of concentrating on the tasks. These are non-important phone calls, a favorite television show, watching your favorite Korean drama/movie, or browsing social networking websites. Because the character of the work allows more freedom, one must be motivated and disciplined enough so as to succeed.
5. Quick Thinking and Effective Decision Making
The capability to think and make the proper decisions promptly is significant especially in times when the client leaves a selected virtual assistant task and wouldn't be around to answer questions or clarifications. In such instances, explore and obtain from available resources for possible solutions instead of expecting the client to reply. Sometimes, a virtual assistant must even have the intuition of what is often a possible intervention to whatever problem that happens and also because of the ability to process information quickly and act based on these.
6. Love your work and enjoy the process of continuous learning.
Being a virtual assistant provides plenty of diversity and to stay at the top of the game, learn on a daily basis. It is just the same as the common saying that if you don’t love what you do then you won’t succeed no matter how hard you thrive. Treat every day differently and watch out for learning curves.
I would say that taking up an online VA course really helped me maximize these 6 skills.
Here are some of my portfolio that I worked on through my online course.
