Amor fati—I accept everything. The feeling saturated my soul as I was performing the simple gesture of closing the sliding door. My friends had just gone home. I was tidying my home when I felt a sudden surge of all the joy and pain of my whole life: amor fati, amor fati—I would do it again, I accept all of it, floating in water, destroyed and broken, the stars, the birds, the swan boats drifting on Echo Park Lake at night, La vie en rose, all the astonishing places and atmospheres I have passed through, the candles going out, miracles every day miracles alongside bottomless suffering, loves lost or dead, the moment of abandonment, the moment a piece of your soul is lost forever, the pain contained in my old notebooks, how they sear my fingers when I look at them now. I avow all of it. This is my fate. This is my one life, my improbable existence. All stitched together by a gentle wind that caresses my cheek. These are my dreams, my torments, my pleasures. Here are the faces of those I have fiercely adored. Then I love to kiss the ground. I know my head will again fill with petty thoughts that blot out this amor fati, but for now, for now, bow and give thanks.
…if our soul has trembled with happiness and sounded like a harp string just once, all eternity was needed to produce this one event—and in this single moment of affirmation all eternity was called good, redeemed, justified, and affirmed. —Friedrich Nietzsche
