palamedes: Is the natural state of the soul quiet or chaos?
ianthe, wearing a taco bell cap and headset, leaning on the counter behind the register: Look buddy, it’s transient, shifting like water

i need that wedding in alecto the ninth to be off the wall deranged and awful btw. if i catch so much as a whiff of narrative affirming that marriage is an expression of equal partnership/a satisfying foreclosure of the permanence of a romantic relationship/otherwised divorced from the broader themes around socially paradigmatic interpersonal violence i'll riot

The way I personally stay true to the story I started down on is to give myself permission to not teach anyone anything. I’m not writing a manual. I’m not delivering bromides. I know that a lot of people do take enormous pleasure and relief in lines or phrases or ideas from stories that ring true to their own lives, but it’s important for me that I tell a story and that I’m not writing Chicken Soup for the Necromantic Soul. It is getting harder and harder again, especially for authors from marginalised places or backgrounds, to write works where the takeaway isn’t ‘this is to succour all my marginalised people’. For anyone on the female-identified axis this is especially hard because it seems to me that most books by anyone female-adjacent have an expectation that they will comfort the uncomfortable and discomfit the comfortable etc., whereas a guy can just tell an adventure story and be done with it. This ties in with an idea that I think <is prevalent> nowadays that good art is moral and bad art is immoral: i.e. if a story is bad it actually has to be because the lessons are bad, and if a story is good it must somehow be beautiful on the moral scale. We go looking for why the art we love is moral even if the art we love is a donut. I think this is the pressure of capitalism on time – that everything has to double or triple up in benefit compared to the time we take on it: if we’re prepared to waste eight hours on a book we had better be able to tot up at the end how that book was also feeding us in some way. That’s brand time we just used.
I am writing for my younger self and it would be disgusting of me to try to teach her anything.

(Rape tw) Any thoughts or context on the "Iran voting to execute all protestors (~14000) and rape virgins beforehand" thing? In the interest of not fearmongering without understanding but not ignoring tragedy? From news I read they definitely actually voted (like 227 out of 290) for the execution part, currently 1 person actually scheduled for execution and some more charged with crimes where the penalty is such. Is this likely to happen, or just a threat? I read some of the officials involved have been sanctioned by other countries but don't know if that means they would actually get involved to stop this.
The Iranian government is not going to execute 15,000 prisoners, and the US media has done an extremely bad job of covering this story.
Roughly 15,000 Iranian protestors have been arrested. As far as we know, only two protestors have been sentenced to death so far. While the Iranian government executes many prisoners, there are no currently-known plans to execute more protesters.
227 members of Iran's parliament signed a letter calling for a harsh approach when sentencing these protestors. At no point does this letter explicitly call for the death penalty, though it is arguably implied in the letter that they would support it in some cases. You can read excerpts of the letter from Iranian state media here.
A letter from the Iranian legislature does not determine how the protestors will be sentenced; the judiciary handles sentencing. The letter was intended to send the judiciary a message that the legislature would like to see harsh punishments, but this is not in any way legally binding. This is intended as a threat against protestors to discourage them from further protests.
These facts were twisted into a story that "15,000 Face Execution" by Newsweek, which in recent years has been turned into a right-wing tabloid.
There is no question that the Iranian government is authoritarian, has a very low tolerance for dissent, and has had a shameful response to recent protests. But if you ever see a story in the US press claiming that an "enemy government" is going to do something so extreme that it is hard to imagine, then it is likely false, and at a minimum deserves closer scrutiny.

I don't think I have ever felt for a character quite what I feel for Harrowhark Nonagesimus.
she's a creep, she's a weirdo, she's my blorbo, she's a tiny rat, she's disgusting, she's such a fucking bitch, she's baby, she's a product of abuse and veneration, she's a shaky shitty little dog, I want her to be happy, I want her to feel safe, I want her to kill God, I want her to scream and scream into the abyss, I want her to look into the face of the horrors that made her and be unafraid, I want her to eat an entire fruit
