Every once in a while I am reminded that Ringtails exist and I'm taken aback all over again. Like, yes, actually, North America does have a rich and diverse extant mammalian fauna similar to but not perfectly paralleling the more "exotic" mammal communities of Africa and Asia. It's not all just squirrels and deer - Raccoons and their relatives are an entire family of small generalist carnivorans, similar in niche to mongooses and civets, that are completely endemic to the Americas, and far more diverse than people give them credit for.

Could we have some ringtail/bassarisk/miner's cat/ring-tailed cat/North American civet cat/babisuri facts that those that know about them don't often know?

Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), family Procynidae, found in the SW United States, Mexico, and much of Central America.

Ringtails, also called Ring-tailed Cats, are in the Raccoon family. (Not actually a cat).

Nocturnal.

They are excellent climbers, able to scale sheer vertical rock faces.

Their hind feet can turn 180 deg.

Their tough foot pads allow them to climb cacti with little trouble.

The state mammal of Arizona.

Highly omnivorous generalist feeder.

Most often encountered in rocky areas, with water nearby.

Mostly solitary.

During mating season, both sexes mark their territory with urine and feces.

Watching Jurassic Park and I have Opinions on this place as a zoo. Feeding the predators live prey?? There's other ways to provide enrichment! Also that enclosure is way too small for multiple large animals like that! Electric fences? Ha! Electric fences won't stop a fucking goat! Where's the zoo experts? Who designed these enclosures?? Were all zoos this shitty in the 90s???

Every birder I've talked to has implied that Wrentits are so secretive that actually seeing one (as opposed to just hearing it) is rare enough to warrant shocked exclamations and looks of awe. I am skeptical of this, because not only have they willingly shown themselves every time I've bothered to do a song playback, on my morning walk today I saw three of them just hanging out in the bushes, chowing down on elderberries. Either I'm incredibly lucky or everyone else is just gaslighting me into thinking they're hard to spot

One of the funniest things about the life series in my opinion is how sometimes one of the players will have to miss a session for some reason, and instead of just not showing up that day they'll send in a friend to play for them. And then everyone else just treats the substitute as if they were the original player, and the substitute takes the opportunity to mess with the person they're substituting for by making promises and deals and whatever else because they know the original will be the one to deal with the consequences, not them. I'm explaining it poorly but it's absolutely hilarious
