Despite the lack of preparation due to the spontaneity of the date, Steve had already pretty much mapped out that particular spot by the water in his head before they even pulled up to the park. It was easily the spot with the best view of the sunset on the water which would make it the perfect romantic backdrop for their little picnic date this evening. The ducks with their whole families paddling along the pond near the shoreline was just an extra bonus and he was glad he had thought to grab some bread for the purpose of feeding them. All in all he thought the evening was shaping up pretty well so far and he was eager to see how everything would play out between them as their date stretched further on. They were already friends and from what he had heard from others, that was always a good foundation for a relationship so he was really hoping that their flirtations over the past several weeks would prove to be the building blocks for something more with Chrissy.
It was no surprise that she was entirely enthusiastic about the idea of feeding the ducks especially knowing her gentle heart and the way it had warmed his own. "I thought you might like to. You know, I heard somewhere that ducks pair up just like us before starting their families. That's kind of cute, right?" Of course, Steve didn't know much else on the subject but he thought that little nugget of trivia was worth sharing with her given her reaction. Offering her one of his famous smiles, he then focuses on the task at hand as they approach their chosen spot and he tries to ignore the absence of her hand from his as they briefly separate to set up their blanket underneath a tree by the water. Once it's all smoothed out on the grass, he picks up the picnic basket that he had set aside and brings it onto the blanket with them and lowers himself to sit in the middle with her where his hand swiftly and comfortably slips back into hers where it belongs.
A sort of pleasure rushes through him when she calls him handsome and it all but shows in the little grin that crosses his face in response. "Well, beautiful, I bring only the best for you. Let's see here..." With the hand that wasn't holding hers, he flips the top lid open on the basket and starts pulling various things out to start setting up the actual picnic. First things first: the plates and cutlery, which he places for them as if setting a dinner table before getting into the actual menu for this evening. "We've got sandwiches for the main course. I grabbed a few different options to pick from." He had made sure they were cut into manageable portions too just incase she might be overwhelmed by size. "I got us a Greek salad, a small charcuterie board, some fresh fruit and of course, some bread for your duck friends." The fruit is set out on its own plate with a vine of grapes as well as some blueberries and strawberries which were in season and perfectly sweet. He had sampled them himself before picking her up just to be sure they were ripe.
"Oh! And of course..." He reaches back into the basket to retrieve the bottle of wine that he had managed to score and a pair of cheap plastic flutes to drink out of. Briefly holding the wine bottle up for her to examine more closely before setting it on the blanket with everything else. "Just don't ask where I got it. It's a secret." He winks playfully at her as if suggesting he had committed a few crimes to obtain the bottle when in reality he had snatched it from his dad's collection some time ago. A cute hopeful grin settles onto his features then as his gaze meets hers and his fingers lightly play with hers in the hand that held her own. "For dessert, I thought maybe we could walk over to that little ice cream shop by The Hawk and share a milkshake or something."
Chrissy definitely overthought what to wear after being asked out by Hawkin’s very own heartthrob, Steve Harrington. Thankfully, there was always something to wear in her walk-in closet and shoes to match. She decided on something simple, a summer dress to match the beautiful day and sandals to pair it off, while her hair tended to have natural waves in the humidity so she thought to leave it down. Make-up was always clean to keep her features natural with a glow and touch of color on her eyes, cheeks and lips. The air feels nice and smells clean and refreshing, warm enough to spend it outdoors at this time. She always loved this park, apparent from the way she took it all in as she carried the blanket in one arm. Warm as it was, it didn’t stop her from feeling the goosebumps take over her other arm when Steve’s hand finally intertwined with hers. Yes, for some time, she had been feeling little things that were less than friendly and more of a crush. He was important to her, so she remained friends with him, careful to not let how she truly felt get in the way.
She absolutely loves this time of the year, where the music comes from the melodies of birdsongs, and the sunsets are painted with various hues of what she called ‘watercolors’ when it highlighted the puffy white clouds which were simply passing through. A small nod is given before she weighs her opinion. “That’s a perfect spot! Almost like it’s waiting for us.” She giggled, because around this time is when the locals would do their evening walks or runs, to simply enjoying the outdoors. There was some truth to what she said though, considering how spontaneous they were with this date — a word that started the butterflies whenever she thought about it. “I love feeding the ducks! I think it’s so sweet how the ducklings know how to follow their mama.”
Once they approached the tree, she gave him a reassuring smile that the lack of touch once she used her other hand to spread out the blanket with a perfect lift up into the air to unfold it where it lands nearly perfectly on the soft grass by the tree. A little smoothing was required on some of the corners, easily fixed and once that was done, she went back to take his available hand in hers just for the brief time where he set the basket in the middle and lowered themselves to sit comfortably on the blanket. “What’s on the menu today, handsome?” Thankfully, the years of knowing each other meant that he knew of her eating habits and would plan something to what she was comfortable eating.
