The Implementation of Social Media in Elementary School Classrooms
Throughout grade school I generally looked up to most of my teachers. I almost thought of them as second parents; they cared about me—about my grades, my social life, as well as my at-home life—which always inspired me. However, I specifically remember a couple of teachers that did not possess the same loving, caring qualities that elementary teachers should always have. I remember constantly being scared of these teachers when I was young—scared to even go to school some days—because these few teachers had such little patience for even the smallest inconveniences. I always wanted to admire all of my teachers, so I knew ever since I was able to think about the question of “what I wanted to be when I grew up” that I would be an elementary school teacher, so I can treat every single one of my students with respect. Although I had negative experiences with some of my teachers growing up, it led me to the realization of what I wanted to do. Now, after many more years of schooling and having experienced numerous teachers with a diversity of teaching styles, I am a year and a half away from graduating teachers’ college and getting to the point that I have been working towards for as long as I can remember.

Since children spend so much time at school, the priority in my future classroom has always been to treat each student as an individual person rather than thinking about the class as a whole. I have always been familiar with Pink Floyd’s song, “Another Brick in the Wall,” but it was not until a couple of years ago that I came across the music video for it and actually thought about the importance of its lyrics. The main point is that students are not just “bricks in a wall;” each student is unique in their needs and learning style, and I will treat them that way every day I teach.
Social media is becoming increasingly popular in classrooms with teachers, students, and parents alike. Although social media such as Instagram, Twitter, etc. cannot be used in elementary school classrooms (since it is not expected that such young children have this technology), there are other types of social media that are being used, which I will incorporate into my future classrooms. Many more fortunate schools are getting tablets in their classrooms which have various apps downloaded (e.g. YouTube) that allow the students to use them to learn subjects like math, science, English, etc. Outside the classroom, social media platforms that allow teachers and parents to connect and communicate are becoming very popular; some teachers post updates on what the students are learning each day on Facebook, Twitter, or blogs, as well as dedicated apps, such as Bloomz, so that parents can stay up to date with their children’s learning and communicate with the teacher.

Through the implementation of social media in elementary school classrooms, students receive a more diverse style of learning and teachers and parents are able to better connect with one another.
