What is a true gift?
By definition a true gift is something that is given to another person without expectation of anything in return.
In our society, this is hard to understand. Because if you give a person a gift you have the expectation of them saying “Thank you”. But that is not a true gift. I know people consider it rude to not say “Thank you”, but then the gift is transactional and no longer something that is given without a “price”.

Too much stuff
Ever look around your house/apartment/room and say “Why do I have some much crap?”
We collect stuff. That is part of us. But here is the real question: what can I let go of?
Will we turn into one of the hoarders on TV that can’t seem to let go of anything? Or are we willing to look at that book that we meant to read the last 3 years and realize that you have moved on from where you were and will never read that book. How about those 5 carafes for the last 5 broken coffee makers that you just keep (just in case you need it)? Or that collection of clothes that you only wear maybe half the clothes?
Let it go. If it is something that you have not used in the last year or really has no purpose in your life. Let it go.

Am I my brother’s keeper?
If I see somebody doing something wrong, should I go a point it out to them?
The answer is yes.
Do you love your neighbor? That is caring for their ultimate well being for them. That is want them to know they know that they are loved and know peace in their hearts. Well, if you don’t point that they are doing something wrong, how will they know they are doing something wrong and so correct it.
But you are thinking “Isn’t that you are being presumptuous that they are doing something wrong? Who are you to judge me?”
There is something called objective good. That is something that no matter your religion or background their are things that things are inherently good. That is bring us peace and well being. If somebody, is doing the opposite, that is bringing harm to themselves or others then that should be corrected.
If you do nothing, then you are being complicit in that act. You are not being loving you are being the opposite of loving. You are being apathetic to that person.

What am I supposed to do?
I think we have all heard the phrase “What do you plan on accomplish in the next 5 to 10 years?”. I hear that phrase and just shrug. I have never been the type of person who can plan where I will want to be in the next 5 years. Heck I have no clue what I will be doing next year. I am one of the those people that just takes life as it comes. To say the very least, I am not a planner.
There is only so long you can live by the seat of your pants. Even living with such a reactiionary life, there is a point where you want an arrow pointing you in a certain direction.  I think I found that. But like everything else in life nothing is certain.

Hey Mom!
I feel like I am being drawn into becoming a Secular Franciscan. I was reading the Constitution of the Secular Franciscans and I am reading through it and it just reminds me of the work that my mother did as a lobbyist for bettering of the education system in Maryland. Always heading down to Annapolis to talk to the legislature. She did that till the day she died. I just imagined my mother looking at what I was reading and thinking that I would be following in her footsteps to fight the good fight. I hope I can help change the world (even if it is just my little part of it) to be a better place.

What is love?
The definition of love is “willing the good of the other as other”. It is not a feeling that comes and go. But it is an act, a decision to want what is best for another person where you will no benefit. If you get a benefit out of loving another, then that is not pure love. The only “person” that can truly love us is God. Since God does not need anything from us and does not getting anything from the Creator loving us.
