This is the next move to restore net neutrality
If it feels like you’re fighting battles on every side, you’re not alone. The struggle is terrifyingly real. But we can still make this year the best possible version of 2018 it can be. There’s a new opportunity to restore strong net neutrality protections: The Congressional Review Act.
What is the Congressional Review Act?
The CRA lets the House and Senate repeal administrative laws—rules and regulations set by governmental agencies—with a simple majority in both houses. The resolutions can’t be blocked by leadership, amended, or filibustered.
This congress has used the CRA more than any other to overturn regulations that protect vulnerable people and the environment, but this time we can use it for a good purpose—to reverse the FCC’s decision and restore net neutrality.
We just need #OneMoreVote
Battle For The Net has secured commitments from 50 senators. One more and we can take this fight to the House. These are the targets:
John Kennedy (Louisiana) | 202-224-4623 | Email
John McCain (Arizona) | 202-224-2235 | Email
Orrin Hatch (Utah) | 202-224-5251 | Email
Dean Heller (Nevada) | 202-224-6244 | Email
If you live in these states, we need you. Even if you don’t, you can still help the cause.
Go to battleforthenet.com to write or call your representatives.
Tell them to support the “Resolution of Disapproval” and overturn the FCC’s December 14 “Restoring Internet Freedom” vote.

At our last lecture, Professor Skoller wraps ups the whole semester. A common point between all the artists who came to speak were amateurs, non-professional beginnings. They started with materials and knowledge before their explorations in the art scene. He connected the use of technology, to the change of experimental art. From this, I thought about each of the artist’s use of the Porta-Pak, new computer software, and other developments that helped them succeed in creating each piece. In the second half of lecture, he focused on Malkia A. Cyril and the Oakland Center for Media Justice. Connecting this to my other classes, the topic of social and internet safety has been mentioned multiple times. Especially when revealing human rights violations and documenting the Middle East conflicts, the material the Center for Media Justice helps guide everyday citizens to be active bystanders to make a difference in society.

Malkia A. Cyril Readings
Thinking about the police and government surveillance throughout my semester here, flipping the script and objectives, this week’s readings capture the police’s movements. The citizens and observers take ahold of technology at their fingertips to document the actions of our authority. From my other classes, I’ve learned about unlawful wiretapping, recording, and other privacy breaches to people of any background or citizenship. But as we move through the century, we can use the advanced technology to reveal some of these wrongdoings. The Human Rights Investigations Lab does contribute to this effort on campus. They verify media from everyday citizens and people, by geolocating the videos with landmarks and weaponry used in the Middle East conflict. I think that educating people on the best use of their pocket technology to document important events is crucial as our privacy and human rights are continually being broken through.

Heartscape’s lecture was very different from all the previous artists. She stayed true to her own worth ethic and style. From all her pieces and the way she talked about each, she was very humble and I feel that she does all her work for herself. Although she doesn’t pay much attention to other’s opinions to her work, she appreciates the times when people receive her work the way she intended. I find her method and ideology of her pieces to be very different but weirdly similar to my own. She breaks many “rules” or expectations of how gaming and digital media should look like, which is something I find admirable of her. I personally felt that her lecture today gave a holistic view of her work and into the artist herself, rather than having them talk about their work from an impersonal perspective.

From Elisa’s lecture today, I was able to see her work from a strictly artistic view. Her work has influenced my thought in viewing our social media and digital identity. With her Archive Fear, her work peels away what we normally see, a curated view of the internet to our tastes. However, with her work, she shows us the code and learning systems our browsers create these filters. She started selling them on eBay and responses from buyers showed her the side of paranoia and worry. Personally, if my information was given out the same way, I would worry but Elisa was being open with what was the source of her curiosity. I think “Need ideas!?! Plz!!” and “When the Towel Drops” were other two interesting pieces she presented. I personally feel that what she addressed in the first piece, “Need ideas!?! Plz!!” applied to many people, especially to people I saw around me and probably to myself. I felt very cautious about my internet presence but there was always a desire to be well received outside of my circle. With her last piece, “When the Towel Drops,” I feel that it addresses a very sensitive topic. I can say it shows an unfiltered view of what the directors had in mind for their film, but one could also argue that these are examples of objectifying women for their sexual purposes. Probably I didn’t get the full purpose or meaning of the piece but from my understanding at this point, that’s what I felt.

A1REVIEWS
The overall text is very informal, unfiltered opinions of what each game gave A1. The author brings in part of their daily life experiences to separate each review but also connects their review with daily life experiences. In some paragraphs, the reader learns more of the author’s life, “[ed. note: A1 Reviews was hospitalised in the course of writing this review due to terrific brain lesions. What follows are his unedited and hysterical notes.]” This review page doesn’t just give an interesting take on indie games but also brings part of the author into the piece. In one of the lists of future games to be reviewed, the author put down multiple times of the different Mario games but I personally feel that they play mainstream games and decides to focus their time on the indie games. The most interesting thing reading the reviews was the rating system. Like all things, not everything is captured through a numerical rating but rather a phrase or feeling everyone can experience.

Today, with The Black Aesthetic, I enjoyed the pieces the three brought to class today. The three who spoke were Jamal Batts, Leila Weefer, and Ryanaustin (Ryan) Dennis. Jamal spoke first, with his piece, he talked about being queer and its connections to being black. Referring to a film, he connects his own experiences and the main character’s interactions and conversations with other characters. The most interesting part was when he broke down the reasons for the main character’s actions and the effects of this portrayal.
Leila Weefer then presented with visuals. The visuals she chose were very eye catching and drew me in. What she said and expressed was a sense of questioning and raised thoughts that I’d never come to.
Lastly, Ryan showed his piece. When I first heard the Siri voice, I instantly thought of the controversy that Facebook is in at the moment. Also at the same time, I knew of his usage of the SIri voice as disembodiment.
During the question and answer session, they spoke of many experiences where they felt alone in spaces of art and creation. I definitely felt the same way in high school, as no one else that I knew was that invested in art and everywhere I went, there were no one who looked and talked to me the same.

As an introduction to the Black Aesthetic on Wednesday, I think I understand the beginnings of how their style came about. While watching “The Last Angel of History,” I realized how much the science fiction development was similar to what I wrote a couple years before. The exact same questions and thoughts I went through when creating new pieces were all combined into the piece. At the end of the lecture, I realized that the relationship between race and art hit very close to home for me. Regardless of race, there are similar struggles, questions, and approaches to address these differences among the different minorities.

Black Aesthetic Reading
In the introduction written by Zoe Samudzi, she talks about the definition of “Black aesthetic.” When we think about this style, many thoughts come up as hip-hop, graffiti, the “ghetto.” Even as new productions are made, many are spearheaded by “Whites.” From her conclusion, I feel that she wants people to view these works as understanding their work for its emotions, ideas that cannot be conveyed in words, and their history.
In the “Claim of Innocence,” the author brings up the point that anyone who is “white” cannot fully participate in their radical movements because of all the preconceptions that the “whites” bring. Through art, the community was able to take out the subjectivity and have the rest of the world view them for purely who they are. White structures, functions, and processes are uncovered for this clear view. Like last week, the author highlights artists and their works that show its viewers the underlying situations and issues in society. All the pieces described talked about pulling the essential stories and experiences and framing it outside of the labels of race, pushing people to wake up and make the connections to what is actually happening around them.
The last article gave a great introduction to the group and see how their work connects to the previous two pieces.

After Gregory Sholette’s lecture, I felt that he captured what I felt in museums and in other large art institutions. I feel that these places give me a sense that I don’t belong, as I am in a lower class, and that I don’t have the rights to enjoy these pieces. Growing up in San Francisco, activism has always been a normal thing. I remember seeing peaceful protests with banners, all colorful and meaningful. There were flyers posted everywhere, edits on ads, and more. I’ve definitely thought about whether if these were put out of context and put into a museum, would this be considered art? Hearing Gregory’s lecture today brought this train of thought to me again. I wish to hear more about these projects and works in the future more often or may even start one myself.

Dena Beard - The Lab
From lecture today, I think Dena connected and captured much of what I see and saw growing up. A lot of what existed for the city’s citizens started to fade out as more young people flood the streets from the new jobs created. With The Lab running, I think that artists that collaborate there add to the organization and the organization grows with each artist. Like many non-profit organizations each cohort that moves through add and helps the organization adapt to the changing times. Connecting to the readings, the change in the population in cities forces many of the important cultural aspects that draw tourism is actually pushed out. The flourishing art scene is pushed out of the borders and working to save them is important to the community and economy of a location.
