Our theme for May is REVIVAL.
It was chosen by our Fort Worth chapter in Texas and illustrated by Mariell Guzman.
“Everything old is new again” sums up the revivals that bubble up throughout culture. Clothing styles, art movements, and all kinds of things come back into fashion decades after their original popularity waned. It’s a useful paradigm. Take something old, dust it off, and adapt it to suit the present moment.
But are there really no original ideas left? Has everything been done? Does it matter? New context adds new meaning. You can recycle whatever you want, just make it your own. Lots of things from the past are worth saving from obscurity.
What we need is a few more revivals.
A revival of empathy and understanding.
Kindness and caring.
A revival of handwritten notes and holding open doors for strangers.
Let’s pursue hobbies and join clubs instead of optimizing and monetizing every hour.
Bring back boredom and curiosity.
It’s time for a revival of the golden rule.
It’s up to you to distill the best of the past and create a better future.

Our theme for April is CROSSROADS.
It was chosen by our Wroclaw chapter in Poland, illustrated by Joanna Gniady, and is presented by Adobe.
We all reach turning points in life that change the course of our destiny. Should you break up or give your relationship another chance? Accept that job offer or strike out on your own?
What’s the best way to go? Continue straight ahead? Or turn left? When you’re faced with a crucial decision, there’s no map that shows where the consequences lead. And sometimes, you only recognize a crossroads when you see it in the rearview mirror.
No wonder that in folklore and mythology, crossroads represent a gateway between our mortal coil and the supernatural realm. An in-between place of transition, where worlds collide, and anything can happen next.
Legend has it that the greatest blues guitarist in the world, Robert Johnson, met the devil at the crossroads of two dirt roads at midnight and struck a bargain to trade his everlasting soul for masterful skill. But there was no deal with the devil. In reality, he practiced like hell.
So, how do you decide which way to go next? Just pick what feels right. Because there’s no wrong choice. Only different journeys to where you’re meant to be.

¿Cuál es el mejor camino a seguir? ¿Continuar derecho o girar a la izquierda? Cuando te enfrentas a una decisión trascendental, no hay ningún mapa que muestre adónde conducen las consecuencias y a veces, sólo reconoces una encrucijada cuando la ves por el retrovisor.
No es de extrañar que en el folclore y la mitología, las encrucijadas representen una puerta entre nuestro mundo mortal y el mundo sobrenatural. Un lugar intermedio de transición, donde los mundos chocan y cualquier cosa puede ocurrir.
Cuenta la leyenda que el mejor guitarrista de blues del mundo, Robert Johnson, conoció el diablo en la encrucijada de dos caminos de tierra a la medianoche y llegó a un acuerdo para cambiar su alma eterna por una habilidad extraordinaria, pero al final no hubo trato con el diablo y en realidad, practicó como un demonio.

Our theme for March is PARALLEL
It was chosen by our Kuala Lumpur chapter in Malaysia and illustrated by OLI.
Like train tracks receding into the distance, our lives eventually reach the end of the line. And for a large part of our journey, most people tend to live parallel lives. We go to school, hang out with friends, get jobs, and take care of our families.
Just look out the window at the home or office across the street. We exist side by side with strangers. Always keeping the same distance of anonymity between us – even though we have so much in common. All of us are trying to build a better life for ourselves and our loved ones.
Of course, we are not carbon copies. The differences make our lives our own. Her black coffee. His energy drink. Their chamomile tea. So, we may never see eye to eye. After all, mathematics proves that parallel lines never meet.
But unlike those train tracks, our paths don’t run in straight lines. We can meet someone new at every turn. Look someone in the eye and smile. Reach across that gap between us and make a connection.
We may be living parallel lives. But we don’t have to go through them alone.

Our theme for February is LAYERS
It was chosen by our Lausanne chapter in Switzerland and illustrated by Catherine Olivia Pearson.
Simplicity provides clarity, but layers give our work a richer complexity and depth.
Musicians fuse melodies, harmonies, and rhythms to create more dynamic compositions. While other artists use a juxtaposition of colors, textures, images or materials for greater visual impact. The creative magic happens when those choices conjure different interpretations and emotions.
Because people have layers too. Just like a collage is created by overlapping layers of found materials, we pile up experiences that form our beliefs and reactions.
The cliché “beauty is only skin deep” means that a pleasant appearance does not guarantee a virtuous character. We are a mess of competing emotions and personality traits. So how we act to the outside world doesn’t always reflect how we feel inside. We make polite chit chat when it takes vulnerable conversations to form meaningful connections.
Surface level pleasantries and superficial decoration have their place. But it is the layers that give life meaning. We must peel them away to discover our deeper truths.

La sencillez aporta claridad, pero las capas dan a nuestro trabajo una mayor complejidad y profundidad.
Los músicos fusionan melodías, armonías y ritmos para crear composiciones más dinámicas. Otros artistas utilizan una yuxtaposición de colores, texturas, imágenes o materiales para lograr un mayor impacto visual. La magia creativa sucede cuando esas decisiones conjuran diferentes interpretaciones y emociones.
Porque las personas también tenemos capas. Igual que un collage se crea superponiendo capas de materiales encontrados, amontonamos experiencias que forman nuestras creencias y reacciones.
El tópico «la belleza es sólo superficial» significa que una apariencia agradable no garantiza un carácter virtuoso. Somos una mescolanza de emociones y rasgos de personalidad que compiten entre sí. Así que nuestra forma de actuar de cara al exterior no siempre refleja cómo nos sentimos por dentro. Hablamos de forma educada cuando lo que hace falta son conversaciones vulnerables para establecer vínculos significativos.
Las comentarios amables superficiales y la decoración superficial tienen su lugar. Sin embargo, son las capas las que dan sentido a la vida. Debemos sacárnoslas a fin de descubrir nuestras verdades más profundas.

Our theme for January is JOURNEY.
It was chosen by our Muscat chapter in Oman and illustrated by Salim Al Salami.
Let’s go. Let’s get out there and see what the world has waiting for us.
By putting ourselves in a new environment or experience, we gain a different perspective. That sense of discovery sparks fresh inspiration. If your brain feels stuck, try moving your feet.
So, let’s travel somewhere we’ve never been. Either down the street or across a far-off border, there’s so many places to explore. Or we can take a metaphorical journey like unlocking personal growth in therapy, advancing on our career paths, or undergoing a spiritual awakening. Or we can enjoy a journey into imagination through a book, film, or other work of art.
As we travel through life, everyone you meet is at a different point in their own unique journey. Some of us know where we’re going. While other paths are full of twists, turns, and obstacles thrown in our way. The trick is to embrace the detours and delays. Because there are no shortcuts on a journey of self-discovery or creative expression.
Just please remember: you are not traveling alone.

Al ponernos en un nuevo entorno o experiencia, obtenemos una perspectiva diferente. Esa sensación de descubrimiento genera nueva inspiración. Si sientes que tu cerebro está estancado, intenta mover los pies.
Así que, viajemos a algún lugar donde nunca hayamos estado. Ya sea al final de la calle o al otro lado de una frontera lejana, hay muchos lugares para explorar. Our theme for December is CYCLE.
It was chosen by our Freiburg chapter in Germany and illustrated by Isabell Meister.
Our Freiburg chapter had sustainability in mind when they chose this theme — from their swarms of cyclists commuting to work to their robust recycling programs that recover and reuse 69% of the city’s waste.
Our world runs on cycles. There’s the frantic buzz of the 24-hour news cycle. The boom and bust of economic cycles. The changing seasons. Every plant, animal, and organism exists in a life cycle of birth, growth, reproduction, and death. Water flows through a cycle of evaporation into vapor to condensation in clouds to precipitation that falls as rain or snow. The menstrual cycle. The circadian rhythm of our sleep cycle.
Just as crops are grown on a rotation cycle to replenish the soil, our own creativity requires a cycle of inspiration or inputs, followed by a burst of productivity or entering a flow state, and finally a period of rest or contemplation.
Cycles are circular and keep things moving. Which cycles are you living in tune with? And which ones are you fighting vainly against?

Nuestro capítulo de Friburgo tenía la sustentabilidad en mente cuando eligió este tema, desde sus pelotones de ciclistas trasladándose al trabajo hasta sus sólidos programas de reciclaje que recuperan y reutilizan el 69% de los residuos de la ciudad.
Nuestro mundo funciona en ciclos. Teneos el zumbido frenético del ciclo de noticias de 24 horas. El auge y la caída de los ciclos económicos. Las estaciones cambiantes. Cada planta, animal y organismo existe en un ciclo de vida de nacimiento, crecimiento, reproducción y muerte. El agua fluye a través de un ciclo de evaporación, pasando a vapor, a condensación en las nubes y a precipitación en forma de lluvia o nieve. El ciclo menstrual. El ritmo circadiano de nuestro ciclo del sueño.
Así como los productos agrícolas se cultivan en un ciclo de rotación para reponer el suelo, nuestra propia creatividad requiere un ciclo de inspiración o aportes, seguido de un estallido de productividad o entrada en un estado de flujo y, finalmente, un período de descanso o contemplación.

What’s your current book or podcast obsession? I'm currently reading the book "Challenger" by Adam Higginbotham, which is a historical account of the space shuttle disaster, which reads like a thriller.
What phrase do you find yourself repeating all too often? The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.
Favorite taco shop? Any taco stand in East Los Angeles.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Do fewer things better.
Who or what inspires you? My 6 year old son.
Favorite coffee shop in San Diego? Rikka Fika or Wayfarer Bread & Pastry
What’s a secret talent of yours? Table tennis (a.k.a. "ping pong"). I take it very seriously.
What’s your go-to karaoke song? If I could sing, it would be "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.
What’s your favorite thing about the San Diego community? People are genuine and deeply committed to doing good work.

Our theme for November is THREAD.
Have you ever pulled on a loose thread in a sweater or sock? Things can unravel quickly.
The creative process can feel like that. A nagging thought, an imperfect bit, or a big tangled mess. But maybe that thread is trying to tell you something. Follow it and see where it takes you.
Because thread is both a physical and metaphorical tool of creativity. In film and literature, a “thread” is the progression of a plot line or theme that helps tie the narrative together. While in sewing, weaving, embroidery, and knitting, the “thread” physically embellishes and holds the piece together.
No wonder a loose thread is so hard to ignore.
It turns out that all the good and bad in your life is forming a beautiful tapestry.

How do you see the world? How do you want to change it?
Vision refers both to the sense of sight and our ability to imagine the future. Are you focused on the little details? Can you see the big picture?
As we age, our eyesight begins to deteriorate; seeing objects up close gets more difficult. And as we gain experience, what we want to accomplish evolves. Will your life grow darker or brighter?
Each creative act involves seeing something in your mind’s eye then attempting to make it a reality. A painter, an architect, and every other type of artist or craftsman has a vision for their work. What message, emotion, or impact do you want to convey in yours?
You are your own visionary. What do you want to see?

Our theme for September is REFLECTION.
It was chosen by our Oklahoma City chapter in Oklahoma and illustrated by Aditi Heins.
Just like an echo is a reflection of sound… and how a camera lens focuses reflected light to form a photograph… our subconscious reflects on our experiences to form our beliefs.
Without reflection, there can be no personal growth. Learning from our past yields greater wisdom and happiness. But don’t let self-awareness turn into self-absorption. Take heed of the Greek myth of Narcissus, who fell in love with his own handsome reflection in a pool of water.
Reflecting on difficult moments can be painful but also healing. When our Oklahoma City chapter selected this theme, they mentioned a reflecting pool at the site of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that was designed to help people reflect on how they were changed by that tragic event.
Pondering the world around us and following our curiosity adds depth to our creative work. As William Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, the purpose of acting is “to hold as 'twere the mirror up to nature.” While George Bernard Shaw said, “you use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.” (Although Bertolt Brecht countered, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.”)
Reflection turns our traumas and triumphs into lessons. It’s how we can create a vision for a brighter future.

Igual que el eco es el reflejo de un sonido... y que el lente de una cámara enfoca la luz reflejada para tomar una fotografía... nuestro subconsciente refleja nuestras experiencias para dar forma a nuestro pensamiento.
Sin reflexión, no puede haber crecimiento personal. Aprender de nuestro pasado aporta más sabiduría y felicidad. Pero no permitas que el autoconocimiento te lleve a encerrarte dentro de ti. Recuerda el mito griego de Narciso, que se enamoró de su propio reflejo en un estanque de agua.

Our theme for August is RITUAL.
It was chosen by our Charlottesville chapter in Virginia and illustrated by Matt Smithson.
Rituals add meaning and a deeper sense of connection to our lives. They allow us to practice mindfulness and reflection. Unlike our daily routine and habits, rituals have the power to inspire us.
Brushing your teeth is routine. Going for a morning walk would be a good habit. And writing a gratitude journal could become your morning ritual. The key is to act with intentionality.
Our CreativeMornings events have their own rituals. Getting a cup of coffee creates an opportunity to say hello to someone new while you wait your turn in line. Reading our manifesto out loud reinforces our beliefs that everyone is creative and everyone is welcome.
What rituals do you practice in your relationships, your spirituality, and your creative work? How do they heighten your sense of purpose and belonging in this world?

What’s your current book or podcast obsession? I’m enjoying Sam Anderson’s “Animal” podcast, which you can hear once a week on the Daily. The episode on puffins is especially good. It’s actually about pufflings, which are baby puffins. I think that word is enough of a sales pitch.
What phrase do you find yourself repeating all too often? “I hear your request.” (I have a 7 year old son)
Favorite taco shop? Mike’s Taco Club on Newport in Ocean Beach. I lived in OB for 7 years with my partner Scott , and we still go there pretty often.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Its a tie: 1. For women: Negotiate your salary! And ask for raises. 2. If you feel nervous about something, try to convince yourself you’re excited instead.
Who or what inspires you? Being outside.
Favorite coffee shop in San Diego? I like to go to yoga at Sojourn in Golden Hill, and Dark Horse brews a great fruity medium roast next door.
What’s a secret talent of yours? I cook a lot of crepes. At least once or twice a week.
What’s your go-to karaoke song? Pat Benatar, “We Belong.”
What’s your favorite thing about the San Diego community? While we aren’t known as an “art city,” the art and design community here is pretty tight, and seems quite committed to being here despite the high cost of space to work. I think this community also pushes for exchange with TJ through shared exhibits, design weeks, institutional exchanges, studio visits, and shared university courses, which is great. I hope that connection continues to get stronger.

Our theme for July is TRUST.
Trust is the invisible thread that weaves the fabric of our relationships and society together. But, in turbulent times, doubt can unravel our strengths.
So, go with your gut. Put your trust in a higher power, in our institutions, and in karma. Believe that people will do the right thing. Trust the process. And that your creativity is a well that will never run dry.
When we trust each other, we feel safe to share ideas, give feedback, and take risks. It requires vulnerability and a willingness to be open to the possibility of disappointment or betrayal. So, trust is not purely belief or faith. It is an active choice.
Trust is a gift. It must be given before it can be earned.

La confianza es el hilo invisible que une el tejido de nuestras relaciones y nuestra sociedad. Sin embargo, en tiempos turbulentos, la duda puede desbaratar nuestras fuerzas.

What’s your current book or podcast obsession? Tbh not the biggest podcast listener, but I have been reading a lot of fiction lately, especially around crime and mystery. I'm currently reading 'Never Lie' by Freida McFadden
What phrase do you find yourself repeating all too often? "Breathe, it's all going to work out." Sometimes when I catch myself overthinking, this helps bring me back.
Favorite taco shop? Lola 55 and Tacos El Gordo are my go-tos!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? "A closed mouth never gets fed." If you want something, you have to ask for it and make it happen.
Who or what inspires you? My wife, Celeste. Always proud of her and she constantly inspires me!
Favorite coffee shop in San Diego? I've been going to Good Omen a lot lately, really love that spot. Otherwise, James or Westbean always hit.
What’s a secret talent of yours? I'm really good and reading maps and obsses with directions!

What’s your favorite thing about the San Diego community? The people. Everyone here has been so welcoming since day one. I really appreciate how kind people are here and how everyone lets you be who you are. One of the most welcoming communities!

Our theme for June is PATTERN.
It was chosen by our Chennai chapter and illustrated by Nishant Saldanha.
Recognizing, forming, and breaking patterns are core components of creativity. Visuals, sounds, movements, and the passage of time all form patterns that shape our existence and our work.
Our Chennai chapter’s selection of this theme was inspired by the art form kōlam; which features patterns of dots that are encircled or connected by straight and curved lines. These intricate, geometric designs are created on the thresholds and floors of houses, temples and businesses using rice flour. The practice is deeply rooted in South Indian culture to welcome guests into the home and bring good fortune and prosperity.
Traditionally created by women, our Chennai chapter shared that these beautiful designs are often created by family members and neighbors as a communal activity. Connections between people form patterns in our lives too.
Which patterns in your relationships, work, and habits are worth repeating? Which ones should be changed? What new pattern do you want to create?

What’s your current book or podcast obsession? Karma- A Yogi’s Guide to Crafting Your Destiny by Sadhguru. This text has had the most profound impact on my life by far. I grew up in a home where meditation, mindfulness, and wellness were explicitly practiced, however, it's easy to forget the places from which we come. I found that while reading this for the first time, I was connecting with an old friend. Hearing stories of Sadhguru's life and his frameworks is truly liberating. I typically read or listen to it once a year while reading/ listening to other books.
What phrase do you find yourself repeating all too often? Give yourself the grace you give to others. It’s very easy for us to be critical of ourselves. Taking a step back and loving ourselves the same way we love others can go far.
Favorite taco shop? As Daygo natives… tacos are def one of our soul foods.
Shrimp tacos - Orignal Mariscos German Taco truck on federal. This is the spot! The tacos + Shrimp cocktails are the best. Birria Tacos - Ed Fernandez. Put respect on their name. They have this plate with the “dry” Birria that you put into the sauce. Get a coffee while you’re there and always come back for more. Carne Tacos - Lola 55. Presentation and salvation. This is what art tastes like.
Fusion Tacos- BINCHO TACO! They are a new Japanese-style taco pop-up, but I’m truly in love with em. I’ll share more about my special order sometime soon… What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? By far it’s “Maybe”, a story of a farmer that has a series of “good” and “bad” things that happen. The moral of the story is that we shouldn’t look at isolated moments of our lives and judge them, clinging to things like “what if”, “I wish this had,” etc. It’s helped me accept aspects of life while still seeking to positively influence it. To quote Alan Watts, “You never know what will be the consequence of the misfortune; or, you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune.”
Who or what inspires you? Everything…. But truly life and death. I try to live a life that's rooted in the present yet cognizant that it will end. Life is just a continuous NOW.
Favorite coffee shop in San Diego? Look. Ya boy spends wayyyy too much money on coffee.. Sooo…. Saigon Coffee(NP), Mnemonic Coffee (Bankers Hill), Mixed Grounds (Grant hill), and Friends of Friends (National City).
What’s a secret talent of yours? I can binge-read manga and I love to freestyle rap.
What’s your go-to karaoke song? Sex and Candy - Marcy Playground
What’s your favorite thing about the San Diego community? Our vibes. Whether it’s walks on the beach, bike rides through the park, or beers in a backyard with the grill blazing. We def know how to kick back, relax, and connect. However, with the cost of housing and life rising, so our laid-back nature is changing. Folks are trying to financially survive here by overworking and that limits our time for human connection and connection with self. We have to do major systems change (policy, infrastructure, transportation, wage increases, access, etc. ) so that folks can live here with a high quality of life.
