Final in a gallery spacey
I prefer the idea of having my final as a sculpture rather than a printed image. I would have liked to have the final displayed somewhere in the college but there was not enough time to move all the suff into the college, it would have been easier if all my work was already in the building.
I also like the idea of having the sculpture in the gallery space as an installation as this is how Eva Hesse would have displayed her work and it is her work style that I am trying to appropriate.

Final Piece
For my final I have both of my sculptures displayed on my garden bench outside. I have chosen a bench rather than the couch as I was influenced by hostile architecture stopping homeless people from sleeping on benches. I wanted to include both time and sculpture in my final so included the time above the bench as a mental reminder not to nap.
I have taken the images of the final outside as I wanted to utilise the space in my garden and use the wooden and brick walls in the back.

Sketch N.0 2
-using a bench inspired by the Hostile architecture
-2 sculptures : The red blanket and the jagged ball
- rather than a clock- stick with the 24hr time- striking.
-1355- Never hits 1400
This is my final sketch. I am happy displaying the work on the bench rather than the wall and the fact that I already have the sculpture prepared means I can plan ahead with how I will go about putting the final bits together.
I have opted to go for two sculptures as I like the two pieces together and I wanted to include one circular sculpture in my final as it was still important to me as the artist to have a circular shape.

Hostile Architecture.
I am reminded of hostile architecture when creating this barrier. Benches created in a certain shape or with barrier to prevent homeless people from sleeping on them.
There is something really saddening about this type of architecture. I would like to use a bench just like the hostile architecture benches and place a barrier between me and the bench, just like the barrier between the bench and the homeless.

Printing
Printing the time. Rather than a clock I've opted for 24hr time that I have put on the wall myself. I figured that this would be more eye-catching than the clock, I also think this will quicker for the viewer to catch on to rather than a clock on the wall.

13:55
The clock never strikes two, the idea is that because the clock never strikes two I never get to have a nap. I put the pieces in situ because I feel they show the concept better. I really like the blanket sitting on the coach rather than hanging on a wall. I feel the final piece is best in a place that I would actually fall asleep rather than being displayed on a wall. I also think repetition works well with the time, it works like a constant reminder.

Blanket
I wanted to include a second form of barrier in my final piece. The clock is the barrier that can't be felt or physically touched, time itself is an illusion but is a powerful barrier for my sleep. The second barrier (the blanket is a physical one, it has been torn and burnt, ripped and dipped in latex so much to the point is cant be used. It also hads jagged sticks to prevent any feeling of commfort. I decided on red again as it adds to the feeling of danger and discomfort.

Sketch ideas
I wanted to keep a sense of Hesse in my work so I decided to draw out some ideas for my final as she had done.
I am looking to use TIME as a main barrier for my final, by removing the 2 from the clock and stopping the hands from hitting two and I am creating a barrier between me and my 2 o'clock nap. I also like the idea of having a blanket there but it can't be used. The blanket is the invitation to sleep but it has been formed in a way that it cannot be used therefore acts as a barrier for me.

For the piece itself I decided to go with 24hr time, as the numbers themselves are more important than the clock face.

2 O’Clock
Does the ticking make you feel sleepy or wide awake? For me it is a mixture of both, the intensity makes me feel awake but the consistency of the ticking makes me feel sleepy. The stillness of the image with the ticking of the clock, the image lacks movement or time but the ticking of the clock creates the time and the movement.

Colour
I wanted to change the urgency or the image. The red adds more of a dangerous tone to the image making the sofa even less appealing to sleep on. I also slightly distorted the image making it look as if the viewer is in a dream like state. I feel this image also had an Alice in Wonderland feel to it, which reminded me of the rabbit and the clock.

II o'clock
In these images the clock is the barrier as it strikes two. As well as a physical barrier it also feels like an emotional one two as the clock sits at two it reminds me it's the middle of the day and I should be more productive. The clock represents time as well as being an emotional and physical barrier. Again I have removed the background leaving only darkness. All that matters is the sofa, the clock (barrier) and me.

Clock strikes Two
I wanted to look into other barriers between me and sleep. Audio isn't a strong point for me but I wanted to try it out to see how it worked. I still like the idea of including time in my work, the 2 o’clock has become an important factor in my sleeping routine slipping in between college and work. When the clock strikes two, the noise begins and creates the barrier between me and my 2 o’clock ritual.

Its 2pm... (Time)
Something I have noticed is I always go for a nap around about 2pm after I finish my Zoom call and just before I start work at 4pm. For me 2 has now become associated with going for a nap. Time itself can become the barrier.

Naunams work is characterized by an interest in language, often manifesting itself as visual puns. He has an interest in setting the metaphoric and descriptive functions of language against each other. For example, the neon Run From Fear – Fun From Rear, or the photograph Bound To Fail, which literalizes the title phrase and shows the artist's arms tied behind his back. He seems to be fascinated by the nature of communication and language's inherent problems, as well as the role of the artist as supposed communicator and manipulator of visual symbols.

What is a barrier ?
I now know that I want to create a barrier between myself and sleep but now I need to ask myself how. I was looking mostly and creating a physical barrier but would now like to look at other barriers such as emotional. Text is always really powerful when it comes to art so here if I have left myself small memos. What language does it take to stop someone from doing something.

Even though I am not creating sculptures of the body, I am creating sculptures that are about the body whilst also working as a barrier for the body. These sculptures are almost a portrait of my body, how the body is feeling but at the same time working at a preventative for the body stopping it from getting the sleep its craving. Artists such as Anthony Gormley also create work surrounding the body but his sculptures carry deeper meaning that just its physical shape.
Gormley describes his work as "an attempt to materialise the place at the other side of appearance where we all live.
Tumblr media
His work attempts to treat the body not as an object but a place and in making works that enclose the space of a particular body to identify a condition common to all human beings. The work is not symbolic but indexical – a trace of a real event of a real body in time.

Fire Ball
Continuing with the idea of a jagged ball acting as a barrier between me and sleep I wanted to add other elements of "danger". My first thought was fire. This also links back to the idea that the circle shapes represent the sun and the moon, the burning out of the day leading to the evening. Fire seems to be a little too dangerous for this project so is not something I would not take forward, however it does definitely create a barrier

The Couch
A second place that I regularly fall asleep is on the coach. This is an area of the house I now try to stay away from to stop any temptation. By enlarging the spiky ball object it becomes a large barrier between me and the couch, a warning to stay away and to get on with work that needs to be done. I like the idea of "barrier" something physically stopping me from falling asleep, this is something that would really come in handy, I might just keep it here.
