For this module, I have decided to study further into my critical practice project which is to delve further into Rorschach tests and how they can affect what we see and how this separates us as individuals. These tests are used to help with mental health to help one with problems that they are having difficulty with, especially if they find it hard to express those emotions. I want to be able to push the original forms of these tests and how they are made by looking into different methods and how I can make a strong connection with those who are looking at these forms. By doing this I plan to create different pieces by using a large variety of materials to change the compositions of each piece, by doing this I want my viewers to become interactive with my work. I want to be able to create artwork that can provoke strong emotions by prying into people’s personal space and to demonstrate the differences that each of us has by looking at how those differences can connect us. This is interesting because each person will see different images through the abstract shapes that are being made. This shows the diversity between each person and shows how induvial each one of us is because these tests can portray our lives, past and present. I will be researching further into semiotics and symbols to have a better understanding of what people see so I can make an accurate conclusion, demonstrating that by making my 2D Rorschach forms. By doing this I will be asking people around me of different ages and gender of what they see so I can make a rough conclusion on their life, to demonstrate that connection. I will be developing further into using a large variety of mediums such as acrylic paint, watercolour, ink, and pencils. Also looking at how I can change the composition and how far I can bend it by looking at plaster and folded forms, making them into 3D forms. By doing this I want people to look further beyond what they see to focus on what is in front of them and try and p...

My decision for this brief was to look further into my critical practice topic which was to look at the effects of the physiological test called Rorschach, and how this can identify the underlying problems that are associated with our mental health. I wanted to research how these tests can have such an astounding impact on us and why we can identify an image through these paintings. Looking further and developing my process I found that these tests break us away from each other as individuals. We do not identify the same image because what we see is significant to ourselves and we can only identify what we see if we know its origins. Experimenting and pushing the boundaries of what was considered the original method, I have reconstructed the idea of the Rorschach forms and portrayed them in a contemporary way where you struggle to identify an image. By doing this I want my viewers to become involved in my work, also creating a strong connection to the artist as well.
Furthermore, with this brief, I focused on experimenting with my Rorschach forms and trying to observe people’s reactions and opinions on them. This was to help me gain more knowledge of how they work but also to have a better understanding of symbols and their meanings. Becoming more acquainted with what each symbol could represent has helped me to analyse everything around me and to link those symbols into our daily lives. Developing further I worked in a large variety of different sizes and materials to experiment with many compositions to create abstract forms within the tests, this has helped me to focus on certain materials instead of a large amount.
However, working in 2D has helped me to push the materials that I am limited to use in new ways. Doing this has helped me to work in projections, clothing, fabric, and photoshop. developing these practices further has helped me to use these materials and work with folded paper to create 3D forms. Moving forward with practicing in more of a 3D style has helped me to add different variety to my Tumblr and the Rorschach tests. This has helped me to change the composition more freely.
Overall, using the contrasting materials and methods has helped me to create a Mixer of both 2D and 3D final pieces, that express the Rorschach methods in different forms. Working towards that goal, in the end, I created multiple folded paper sculptures using acrylic paint and Rorschach tests to create an over-layering text pattern that was made using photoshop. Developing from the 2D method I used the folded paper in a minimalist way and branched out to embedding them into the plaster to created 3D paper and plaster sculptures. Taken this brief further into my dissertation I would like to develop it more by exploring different mediums and techniques on a larger scale. But also, to research more into the method in a professional way, so I can contribute more into what people see and to create a stronger connection between the artist and the viewer.

For this brief, I am developing further with critical practice which is to look at the psychological method call rorschach tests. I want to be able to delve further into these tests and find out how they can affect what we see, but also sperates us as individuals depending on what we see as well. I have developed both research and practical work in a way where I have explored the method of rorschach tests in a contemporary way. The reason for this is to push the boundries of the orignal forms and to see if we are still able to identify an image if I am continuously changing the compositions of them. But also, to create a connection between the artist and the viewer.
Overall, I have worked in a large variety of different materials and worked towards a large number of final peices. I decided on making a mixture of both 2D and 3D finals. Working towards this I have made multiple folded paper forms using the arcylic rorschach tests and created an overlayering text pattern that I made into a 2D format. Also developing from the folded forms I have branched out to using the folded rorschach tests and embedded them into the white plaster, thus making small scale 3D paper and plaster sculptures.

Rough mind map that I made at the start of the brief, this helped me to write down rough ideas that I wanted to look at and helped to record research that I would use for my tumblr blog. Also helped me to make better sense of the topic I wanted to research and deveolpe further

I also made a quick home made calander that helped me keep track on my time and helped me handle both briefs at the same time. I have colour coordinated both topics so it was easier for me to tell the difference between the two.
The calander is for both briefs, I found this alot easier to do it this way because it would be really confusing if I did two separate calendars

I made a mix between plaster and coloured folded paper. Making the scultpure this way has helped to keep the scutlpture clean and creates amazing abstract forms. I did find it really hard to make out any images because they become absorbed into each other. So I would like to work in limitation, but working with little paper instead of making a large scutlpture

I kept the bowl shape to create the base, but using the paper with the rorschach forms I embedded these into the plaster in different depths and angles. I went back to the folded forms and decided to take the 3D installations further, but instead of installation them to the wall I wanted to make them as free standing scutlpture forms that I could put together as a series

With each scutlpture I have placed the folded paper in different forms. Where they would be deep in the plaster but some would be half out the plaster. Doing this has helped me to see what composition I prefer. I do like how the paper contrasts with the plaster however I dont like how the plaster is covering some of the rorschach paintings. So I would like to at least keep the pictures out in plain veiw so you are able to see an image

I wanted to be able to make rorschach impressions using clay as a barrier. Pouring the plaster onto the clay created a bowl shape with the rorchach test above it.
I like experimenting this way because it was new and has helped me to see if that idea worked, it didnt but I'm glad I experimented with it. I would like to develope this process further, but with resources that I will be able to use in the future.
I am still going to use plaster as the base. Because I like the curves and bumps it creates when you place something in it. Also it gives a really smooth finish

I decided to move from 2D and deveolpe more into 3D as I want to push the rorschach tests further to evolve it into abstract art that becomes art to make an image from it. That's why I want to experiment with different materials and compositions. I used acrylic paint to make these tests because it drys very quickly and also hardens the paper to make it more stronger. I will be forming these into 3D forms using plaster as the base

Final 2D peice
Working further with the overlayering texts and the mixed media photos I found that with the video it wasnt having a large affect on them and I felt that they looked clumsy and not professional. So instead with working with the text in the video, I oberlayered and faded the text into the photos to make them into 2D images and this was the final outcome that I came up with for a final 2D peice

Written texts that I used to overlayer on top of the images

Another video development. On this one I changed the saturation of the colours and made them more vibrant which made them stand out more

Creating these videos was really easy and basic. I made then so I could see the different compositions that I could work with, if I didnt have the necessary toold I would like to work on a more advanced level. I took small recordings of the text that I took from each individual and used it as overlayering sound. This helped to give it a hypnotic tone

More continuous over layering technique using photoshop. I will be using these photos in small video development work to see them in different compostitipns.

Using photoshop further I wanted to experiment to see what it would look like if I was to place mutliple photos together. I was worried ot would make it look busy and you woyldnt be able to make out anything. But I did find that it worked really well and it has made me want to develope them further
I choose different layouts and decided how many photos to put on each one to see what would happen if i placed alot of pictures together or try and do a little.
Each photo has about 3 to 5 layers on each one, so they are their own peice of work. They are just coming together to make one big peice
