We are done! The whole work was completed in the last second. Although some details are not perfect, we are still satisfied with the final visual effect. This group homework was really great and provided me with a very different experience. I enjoyed the process very much.

Today we got two news, one good and one bad, and the good news is that 90% of our work has been completed. The bad news is that there are many problems, but I think we have another day to solve them. From the very beginning, we used cardboard to build the entire project. When we painted the cardboard, the cardboard (the top of the item) became flat and not strong enough. And from the appearance, it is not beautiful enough. So we are going to make a new top and make a box to place our artwork. Time is not enough, but I think that a reasonable arrangement is still enough for us to complete the entire project.

Finally, we decided to present our work in the paper cut. It sounds easy, but in the process of doing it, you need to be very focused and patient because the pictures are small and very difficult to cut. It took us two days to finish all the parts we needed to cut.

Work in Progress
Posted by Tanvi Shah
Coming up with ideas is an easy job but executing it takes a lot of things like passion, dedication, hard work and in our case PATIENCE!!!
We had decided on making the lamp. But making it work was not easy. From using our craft skills to using mathematic formulas for the first time we kept altering, redesigning and updating it.
After hours of work here is the glimpse of our UNBREAKABLES!

The story line in our installation
Post by Da Xi
As we said before, the ideal of the story line for us is the recognition of concept or unsolved mysteries. We expect audiences could be deeply thinking of our world from a different perspective. In this case, we decided to discover the mysterious events in 30th parallel north. The 30th parallel north is a circle of latitude that is 30 degrees north of the Earth's equatorial plane. Coincidentally, a lot of mysterious and ancient civilization exist in these areas. Our team selected seven representative ruins of human civilizations as the main content of projected. They are including Mayan civilization ,Pyramids of Egypt, City of Atlantis, Sahara rock painting, The Potala Palace, San Xing Dui civilization and Ling Jia Tan civilization. Firstly, we research image from the Internet and use photoshop to mark light and shade contrast of this image. After that we cut the lighted-up side of the image and stuck them on the transparent coloured paper. We expect the shadow of the image could appear on the background plate through the light.
The following is the brief introduction of seven representative ruins of human civilizations and the reason for selection.
According to Harrison.G (2017), There are nearly 138 surviving Egyptian pyramids and the most famous one is the Great Pyramid of Giza, near Cairo. The only surviving landmark is the 455ft Great Pyramid of Giza, out of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In a manner of speaking, Pyramids of Egypt could be seen as the most biggest human civilizations in our world. Much is still not known about how exactly the pyramids were built. Many mysteries need to be explored in Pyramids of Egypt and here is the reason for selection.
According to History.com Staff (2009),The Maya Empire reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The main area of empire were centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar-making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. We may confuse about what might have caused this dramatic decline.
According to History.com Staff (2010), a likely mythical island nation mentioned called Atlantis. Plato (c.424–328 B.C.) describes it as a powerful and advanced kingdom. The kingdom of the Atlantis sank into the ocean around 9,600 B.C. Many films and television works are based on the legend of Atlantis. We also want to imagine the possible form of this legend.
According to The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica(2016), Potala Palace once served as the seat of the Tibetan government and the main residence of the Dalai Lama. it remains a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. This human civilization could be seen as the most highest ancient palace in the world.
According to Jeffrey Hays (2009) The earliest art appeared about 12,000 years ago. The art from 12,000 years ago to 9,000 years ago is called Babulus period art after the wild oxen. Most of images from this period are of large animals hunted by humans. We are truly surprise to see Sahara used to be a savannah. We could imagine the scene of the past of Sahara from these rock painting.
According to Aprilholloway (2014). The cultural relic in Sanxingdui included animal-faced sculptures and masks with dragon ears, open mouths and grinning teeth; human-like heads with gold foil masks; decorative animals including dragons, snakes, and birds; a giant wand, a sacrificial altar, a 4-metre tall bronze tree; axes, tablets, rings, knives, and hundreds of other unique items. We have been lost in thought about Sanxingdui artistic style that was completely unknown in the history of Chinese art. When were Sanxingdui civilizations born in Chinese mainland? This question forever has not decided answer.

Walkthrough storyboard
Post by Lam Our installation will be in the form of a rotatable lamp. The lamp can be placed anywhere in the exhibition venue. Walkthrough description are as the following:
Audience stands in front of the installation
Audience will see a projected shadow by default
Interact with the installation by manually rotating the lamp
Projected shadow changes according to source
The initial plan is to make the lamp spin using heat generated by the light bulb. Considering the size of our lamp and the amount of heat required, we made adjustments to our design. The first idea that we came up with is to assist the spinning by using a mini table fan. The fan is around 5x10x10cm large, and could be easily secured on a wall. We rejected this idea due to the wind generated being unstable, causing the lampshade to swing. For the best viewing experience, the lampshade itself should be spinning at a constant speed, which is difficult to achieve with our limited resources.
According to the suggestion made by our supervisors, the lamp could be spun by hand instead of by heat. In our case, manual spinning not only solved the problem of lacking a constant force applied on the lampshade, but also made our installation more enjoyable. By allowing user interaction, audiences will be able to decide what they want to see, and take in the details they like properly. Therefore we decided to accept the suggestion.

Experiment: Waterfall projection (rejected)
Post by Lam The group decided to try out this idea because it would have the largest visual impact among viewers. The initial plan is to fix a projector either on top, beside, or in front of the staircase in Art Gallery, and project a looping video on to the steps. The two challenges we face when trying to make this work:
obtaining footages of running water corresponding to the projector position
ensure the projector can be secured properly
There are several approaches to solve the first problem. We can either spend time searching and editing footages, or generate our own images for this installation. Each method has its pros and cons. Footages available online is highly unlikely to fit our requirements perfectly, and customizing them would not produce results good enough for the projection. Although searching for footages didn’t took us very long, the time it costs us in customizing it is unbearable. On the other hand, using computer generated images provides great control during customization. We would be able to select the most suitable camera angle, set our own duration, and even enhance the quality of the digital water (colour, underwater visibility).
A common problem existing in both methods is the difficulty to loop the footage. The viewing experience will be less favourable when videos are cut abruptly from one scene to another scene. The team tried to create smooth transition between the start and end of the video, but the outcome did not look acceptable.
After going through a few scenarios, the team realized that the projector itself could be a major health and safety issue. If we project images or videos from the top, we have to secure the device right below the ceiling, with the risk of it dropping and hurting visitors. If placed in front of the staircase, the viewing experience will be a lot less pleasurable, since there will be people passing in front of the projector, causing visual distraction.
Besides practical reasons, there is no significant value or theme brought forward by this piece. Unlike the other proposed idea which features mythical events around the world, this installation could be refreshing when done correctly but does not provoke deeper thoughts or reveal any of our perspective on any topic. Therefore the team came to a conclusion that this idea should be rejected.

Experiment film projector projection (rejected)
Post by Da Xi
These two plans were inspired by film projector. First of all, we plan to prepare the transparent paper and cut different shapes from space to space. These shapes could pervious to light, in this case, audience can catch sight of the image of the people or landscape through the light (the shape of image depend on the shape we cut). By moving the transparent paper, the projected image will be change, it looks like moving.
The second plan is similar to the former one. We plan to prepare a black box(light-proof) and put the light inside the box. Transparent papers are in front of the light and connect with a rotating stick. People could rotate this stick outside the box and enjoy the change of image.
When we are ready to carry out the plan, two challenges should be solved. The first challenge is about the how to make the image of the transparent paper. The most intuitive approach is adopting the same creation method of photographic film. However, it is really difficult for us to follow this method. In addition, we cannot find any practical methods to replace the former method.
The second challenge is about the story line. What the content of the story line? could be a plot in the movie or specific classical episode of our life. However, we hope the story line should be more meaningful and heuristic. The ideal of the story line for us is the recognition of concept or unsolved mysteries. We expect audiences could be deeply thinking of our world from a different perspective.
In fact, these two plans can not reach the requirement of our vision, they also exist some serious technical difficulties. In this case, we cannot but find another way to make a new plan.

Lumiere light show
Post by DA DA
19 Jan 2018
On 19th of January, our group went London to attend the Lumiere light show. We walked along the King Cross Station and Piccadilly Circle. We were impressed by Lampounette, Waterlicht, Entre les rangs, Guardian Angels and Child Hood. We were shocked not only the gorgeous lighting effect, but also the unique design and design philosophy.
First of all, we visited the Lampounette, a series of installation art. They have the normal illumination function. These artworks were created by the French artistic studio TILT, they focus on the exploration of light and its interplay with art, architecture and space. How could we change the fixed pattern of thinking about familiar urban landscapes? In my opinion, make the normal objects’ volume bigger is a useful way to reach the exaggeration of the artistic effect. Imagine that the table lamp is much higher than your height, you may feel humble. After all table lamp is the most normal things in our life, they're not even more than 40 centimetres.
Waterlicht is the large-scale art installation, we could enjoy this installation in whole Granary Square. In the beginning, I felt the light of this installation offending to ours eyes. The artificial mist was deliberately mystifying to raise the colour of mysterious. However, after I understand the idea and theory behind this artwork, I could learn more about Waterlicht. Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde stress the power and poetry of water and enveloping us in a virtual flood whilst. Waterlicht question us the method of tackle global warming and rising sea levels. Waterlicht could be considered as a simulated experiment of future disaster. It inspired each one face facts and find out the solution of this issue.
Lumiere light show bring us an unforgettable experience, not only stunning effect but also the theory. These artworks inspired us pay more attention on social issue. In the next step, we will also create installation to pose penetrating questions.

process
posted by Qing Han
After we have decided on our plan, we still have a lot of work to do. The first one is about the appearance and size of the project. Since the main part of our project is composed of seven images, taking into account the final visual effect, we must first determine the size of the picture, and then set the size of the whole picture according to the size of the picture. About the overall structure and working principle, we drew a lot of drafts, calculated a lot of data, determined. Regarding the motion principle of the works, we wanted to refer to the method of making similar works on the internet, but because of the relatively large size of our works, we can not use the online tutorials. In addition, we need to emphasize the interaction. Therefore, we decided that at the top of this work Add a handle to allow visitors to participate in this work. Next, we will decide on our details, such as the overall tone, style and picture choice of the artwork.

Egg insurance

Post by Luke
17 Jan 2018
For the seminar as a group we were given two tasks, one to cut out shapes using pink paper, where each cut out was to be of the same shape, in smaller sizes for one minute, we chose to focus on a triangle shape, where every cut out would be a smaller version of the triangle cutting pieces from the larger triangle shapes to smaller pieces, unfortunately we were only able to cut out two shapes, making the mistakes of cutting to neatly, slowly and focusing on cutting big shapes instead of just cutting small ones out.
For the second task we were tasked with being able to drop an egg from a window, but without the egg breaking, being given paper, string, and tape to produce a safety method of protecting the egg, choosing to wrap the egg in tape, with the egg being placed in a paper box using the tape stuck to the sides placing the egg in the centre, hovering above the bottom in an attempt to stop the egg hitting the ground, with paper underneath acting as a cushion to soften any impact from the ground. Originally producing a design with the egg in the box container, having a parachute hanging over the container for it to be landed safely unable to produce a good working parachute, we chose to change the design to be wrapped safe impact fall, to protect the egg from breaking.
The egg landed without breaking, being able to make quick adjustments well, working together, being able to develop the changes in design, and to carry out quick instructions, to a good ability, improving the groups team working skills, gaining a better understanding of how each other works and thinks, going forward to producing further work.

The Plan
Posted by Tanvi Shah
The plan is simple.
Step 1:
Collection the Information
Our resourceful girls Lam Shun-Min and Han Qing will work together in selecting seven-eight places on 30 degrees northern latitude. Meanwhile, me and Xi Da will be experimenting the technical angle of the lamp which includes which light to use, what material to use in building the outer side of the lamp, etc.

Step 2:
Finalizing
After finalizing which pictures to use we will process it in Photoshop to get Black and White images which will be easier to cut and will cut the light to form shadow when placed in front of the torch.
Step 3:
Curation
After all the digital we will start with the manual work of cutting the frames, making the structure and cutting the finely detailed images. The risk is to get cuts while using scissors and cutters, for which we will take precautions and keep First Aid kit handy.
Step 4:
Anti-Climax
Once all the cutting and pasting work is done we will start assembling everything and check if it needs any corrections or any redo's. This is the step where all our problem-solving skills will be measured.
Step 5:
All the problems of Earth
We are sure and prepared for this step, something or the other must go wrong on the final day of installation. So we will be preparing our project on time so that we get time to solve all the problems that have to challenge us at the last minute.
Step 6:
Climax
Oh! That curtain will be raised on 6th of Feb 2018

Brainstorming
Post by Lam
Installation Concept
The team started out by exploring possible topics and ideas. We agreed that we can look more into social and political issues, or even controversial topics. Our installation can either try to raise awareness, probe for ideas, or provoke in depth discussions among viewers. Some suggestions included:
Racism/Discrimination in different regions
Create something that would force people into different perspectives. When viewing a problem.
Feminism
Women in some regions of India are being treated impolitely in public. To raise awareness, some artists made an installation in a dark room to recreate the experience of being touched inappropriately.
Climate change
Climate change is a common issue among modern people, however in most cases it remains as a topic. The average person rarely puts sustainability into consideration when performing daily tasks. Some topics that could be covered: coral bleaching, wildlife protection. It might also be interesting to compare perspectives of different people on the same subject.
Clash of culture
As the number of immigrant increase, conflict between culture and religions become prominent. (Example: Muslim vs Hindu) What are the main cultural conflicts in UK? How does discrimination occur among people? Does social class affect the severity of discrimination?
Installation Design
The team agreed that including user involvement in our installation would make things interesting. Audiences will pay more attention to an artwork that requires viewer participation or input. Some ideas on installation design:
2 screens placed vertically, showing different video. User would have to shift between displays based on their choices
Viewers make choices during viewing by looking into different device.
Use pictures/slideshows/videos
Other decisions made:
The team agreed to visit Lumiere London together at 19/1/18

first group discussion
posted by Qing Han
Today is our first-panel discussion, and we know each other's major and their respective technologies. For the moment there is no particularly good idea what to do next. I think this is normal, because it is the initial stage of the group work, and we are not fully involved in the project. We have not completely opened up the idea. There is a light show on the 19th in London. We will go to the show together, I believe we will have a better idea of the show. Although my team members come from different countries and study different professions, they are very friendly. Very much looking forward to this group work.

Getting It Started…
Posted by Tanvi Shah
So, after grouping, we received a bag of different materials that should be projected with light. As Luke described, after 5 minutes of all the experiments, we made a torch and made slides of different shapes and letters to cut. The main purpose of this 5-minute game is to explain our project and bring us to work with our new team. That goal achieved! Because in these 5 minutes we burst out of ice and started working as a team, it seems that we did not work together for the first time and no one knew what to do, but they did something that we laugh at the best part of sharing. Although the result was unexpected, we like what we did.
It is very important to make your first day comfortable. Through this activity, we suddenly became friends and everyone started to work hard for the team.
I look forward to the next few weeks of excitement.

Introduction to light
Post by Luke
For the beginning of the light projector project, groups were formed combining creative people from different creative fields, this group included five people from five different art fields, being grouped together, Dada, Quiry, Lam Shun Min, Luke, and Tanvy to produce a light projector.
Together forming a torch with three slides developed presenting the letters H,U and a star shaped projection, showcasing a lighted version of the shapes, when the slides were placed over the light in the dark room.
The development work for the projector, resulted in many ideas being experimented with, which included the forming of a cylinder shaped projector, but was too big for the light to transfer through brightly or large enough. Instead choosing to create a touch shaped projector, being wrapped in black tape, due to the paper being transparent, the touch had a small opening for the light to transfer through, but the light transmitting through the little gap was not big enough, instead cutting open the hole opening for a large amount of light to pass through, where the three cutted out shaped slides were produced, to create projections of different letter forms, including the star shape.
Overall the seminar being a good experience allowing team to work together, developing good quick, but challenging creative ideas, testing everyone’s creative thinking, allowing everyone to experiment with light, and different ways of possible developing the ideas of showing light further.
The quote from the seminar being Choosing materials: we just used the black tape.
