Last week, we euthanized a very long-term patient at my clinic. He had been my hospital patient several times and for a while his mama was in every other day. His conditions were becoming unmanageable. His quality of life was declining, and his mama understood that this was the kindest option.

Our hospital is open to clients at this time, but his mama didn't even want to come in. I went to find them in the parking lot with a growing sense of dread. I could already feel that this one was going to hit me hard.

His mama is sobbing when I get to her, and she immediately says after a sigh of relief, "I'm so glad it's you."

That is, without question, one of the highest compliments I've ever been paid. Entrusting someone with your beloved pet's care is one thing, but end of life care is something else entirely. She knew that I would show kindness and compassion to her sweet boy until the very end.

Be the compassionate care that your patients deserve. Be the face your pet parents want to see in their worst moments.
