When she debuts for India, many in cricket fraternity surprises as a 17-year-old is representing India. It's not that we didn’t saw debuts at an early age for Team India, but it is always about men’s team India. No one notice about women’s team but 2017 Women’s World Cup had a huge impact on cricket world in India. Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami are only players in the Indian Women’s team that Indians can recognize before 2017. But the 2017 World Cup changed the landscape of Women’s cricket completely.
So there was so much attention on women’s cricket in the new era of Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and others. With the Jemimah Rodrigues, a 17-year-old there was so much excitement about her debut. She had a tremendous record at Under-19 women’s one-day cricket league. She made whooping more than 1000 runs in an Under-19 One day league tournament 2017-2018.It was unheard of 1000 runs in a single ODI tournament. So it was big news for the cricket world. she got limelight after becoming the only second player to hit double hundred 202 not out in women’s Under-19 one day cricket against Saurashtra team in the same season as the first player to do this is Smriti Mandhana who scored 224 in the domestic 50-over tournament. In the previous match in the same tournament, he scored magnificent 178 runs against Gujarat team.In total; he made 1013 runs in season 2017-18 with 4 centuries and one double century with a staggering average of 112.56. No one in history of this tournament made more than 1000 runs. Also, he made 665 runs with averaging 376 with 5 not outs in 6 matches in the previous season of 2016-17.
India call-up is on the way for her, so on the back of 2017-18 fabulous season, she selected for the Indian team in ODI and T20I series against South Africa. On 13 February 2018, Jemimah made her debut against South Africa in T20Is. Then she made debut in ODIs against South Africa. After few ups and downs in an international career, now she is prominent batter for Team India. She has 5 fifties in T20I in 25 matches. She also had 2 fifties in 10 ODI matches. She also got a contract of Yorkshire Diamonds for Kia Super League and had a successful KSL tournament by scoring 401 runs at a healthy average of 57.29. She made headlines by scoring the fastest century in KSL history (112* off 58 balls) for Yorkshire Diamonds in August 2019. Also, she scored stylish 77 off just 48 balls in 2019 Women's T20 challenge earlier this year to win IPL Supernovas over IPL Velocity. With all this, she became already a sensation in International cricket.
Background of this, she was already a child prodigy. Only at the age of 4, her father Ivan Rodrigues started cricket practice of Jemimah with her brothers. At the age of 13, she gets selected for the U19 team of Mumbai. Also, she got selected for Under-17 and Under-19 Hockey teams of Maharashtra. But she opted for Cricket is way forward for her. She many time practiced with boys too. So there was always talent in her. His father turned coach looked after her every step to become batting sensation of India.
Also in studies, she secured 80 in board exams. So there is always a balance between studies and sports. Also, she can play the guitar too. She said her role model is Smriti Mandhana so as Indian opener Rohit Sharma. Also recently retired English wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Taylor is her favourite player.
From a very low age, she lived up to expectations of her father, family, cricket circle in Mumbai. But now she has to fulfil up to expectations of all Cricket fans across India especially all will have eyes on her performance in 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and 2021 ICC Women's ODI World Cup.
