watched relight because im so normal mode about dn and. this specific scene right before the wammy's house flashback really got me.
i think he was looking for, like, the closest thing he knows to comfort. he walks in, quiet. after watari asks him what's wrong i just imagine him standing there for a second before flatly saying something like "I believe I'm going to die soon, Watari." because he KNOWS. he's heard the bells all day.
i feel like manga L is like, yeah i'm gonna die but it's whatever. i still won't lose. i got backup. meanwhile anime L DOES NOT want to die. he's sad and so emo about it he literally stands in the rain. he wanted to see this to the end. he was getting so close, one last test and the case would be solved. but he knew that wasn't going to happen, and it was possibly the first time he needed watari for reasons other than tasks or his inventions or case work.
L just needed him. and it reminded him of when he first went to wammy's house with Watari. and the scene of young L squeezing his hand, needing that comfort when facing the unknown. the unknown, instead of being life in a new place, being what will happen after his death. what will happen to him and the case he's risked his life for.
thats why i feel like this scene was shown right after that. because that's the last time he remembered needing that comfort. its the same feeling.
or it was just him instructing watari with the delete all data in case of emergency thing. but i feel like he'd have that planned for a while before.
