Tarkovsky was a master who stood on his own, a creator of grand, operatic imagery as great as the best painters conjured or the best composers composed. There is little reference for his style, as nothing like his had ever preceded it; he was a creative original, operating in an extremely stifling and oppressive creative environment (he eventually fled the Soviet Union and made his last film in Sweden). Died young, but in the grand scheme of things he left a body of work which most directors could only dream of leaving behind.
