you HAVE to expand what your mental image of what a woman looks like in order to progress past trans/misogyny and intersexism. when you finally accept that "woman" does not have a set look or sound, you free yourself from the chains of both patriarchy and radfem ideals. "woman" does not mean thin, pretty, hairless, short, quiet, large breasted, hour glass figured, weak, submissive, high voiced, or small.
women can and do look, act, and sound like anything. cis, intersex, trans, butch, non binary, gender non conforming, detrans, or anything else: any woman can look, act and sound like anything. we are just as diverse as any other member of this population. in order to acknowledge this, we must let go of the concept that a woman "should" look, act, or sound like anything.

September pick: Cripping Intersex
Tumblr media
Our book pick for September 2024 is Cripping Intersex by Celeste Orr. This is a book about the intersections of disability studies and intersex studies, and we're hyped to learn!
This is an academic book, so rather than read the whole thing our plan is to read Chapters 0 and 7-9.
We're excited for this book pick - it's been requested many times in the club, but only recently were we able to acquire an electronic copy of the relevant chapters to share with the club. (It's been important to us that university library access should not be a barrier for participation. 💜)
As usual, we meet on the last Friday of the month: September 27. We’re meeting at 16:00 Eastern (20:00 UTC) on Microsoft Teams (see discord for the link).
The MS Teams meeting is configured to provide live captions in English. Participants are welcome to contribute non-verbally through the text chat in the meeting. If you have other access needs please let us know 💜.
Discord link: https://discord.gg/V3mrcjakGQ Also see: our code of conduct
How much of the book do you need to read? You don’t need to finish it participate! You are welcome to skim and/or skip chapters as desired. Current & future book picks If this isn’t in the cards for you, our pick for October is Rosalind's Siblings, a sci-fi short story anthology edited by Bogi Takács, and for November we're reading Just Ash by Sol Santana.

"Oh so we're not allowed to say 'trans men are men' anymore? So you think they're women? You're a transphobe?"
What they actually said: "Ugh, gross, trans men really are the men of the trans community."
Times like this are when I need more people to be aware of the term "malgendering," the kind of transphobia where someone validates a trans person's gender identity just to use it against them. We can all tell all you're doing is applying your negative stereotypes of cis men to trans men, and it's not transphobic to call you out on it. Trans men do not become shittier people when they transition and you are awful for implying they do.

Yes, this is a long article. Yes, there are a lot of names of people involved. You - yes you - person who is scrolling while taking a shit, should read this. Just sit and read it and take it all in. Especially if you care about accessibility in gaming.

Hmm
I just saw a critique of “oh so transmascs can use a word which is clumsy in its etymology to talk on their oppression and we can’t criticize that, but TME/TMA is able to be criticized on that basis?”
And… it’s kinda different when you actually put these two things in context.
TMA/TME as a binary like cis/trans or multispec/mono or aspec/allo is on a first-stage of language creation, as far as I’m aware. There hasn’t been a 6+ year-long history of trying new words in the face of people nitpicking etymology while having the actual issue behind the needing a new term not engaged with in the meantime which proves that the word isn’t the actual problem and that this is only in-bad-faith in order to shut us up.
I understand the frustration, I even get a knee-jerk reaction to being told that the language you’re using is maybe not the best language (especially considering some of these people were the ones actively utilizing that tactic against transmascs wanting to speak on our issues; they’d be extra prone to be wary of this tactic). But a critique of the word choice itself being harmful isn’t in-and-of-itself a bad-faith critique, especially when it’s on a first attempt at the language and not a nitpick about etymology but a problem with labelling other people’s experiences as being totally exempt for them.
Like. On the surface you can make the “oh so transmascs don’t have to be perfect in their language but transfems do?” argument. But when you actually dig into what’s being discussed it really isn’t that simple.

It's like some people think intersectionality is a math problem?
Trans + man = cancels out so no oppression
Trans + woman = double oppression
And that's just? Not how real life works? Like you can't come to a conclusion via logic math problem and then insist it's reality because it makes sense inside the theory you've crafted.
You have to check it actually aligns with what is happening out in the world - Which is trans men sharing all the ways systemic and institutional transphobia targets us and affects us.
You can't just tell us to shut up because you like your theory better and you're upset our lived experience messes it up.
You can't tell us we don't experience what we live every day?

Disorganized (aka fearful-avoidant) attachment style is overanalyzing/overcorrecting when you think your partner might be pulling away from you, but then pulling away from them when they draw close to you.
It is both craving AND fearing intimacy so deeply that you grip people tight in your hands lest they leave you, but keep them at an arms length lest they love you.

Shoutout to cripples who do stuff even though they're not meant to like drinking caffine. Yes it messes with my body but i want a cup of tea and i want it strong. Shoutout to cripples who aren't always perfect and compliant in their treatment
And don't you dare shame cripples who do stuff that's bad for them if you don't shame ableds for drinking alcohol or eating junk food because we all do stuff that isn't good for us and being a cripple doesn't mean we have to be perfect. We can be angry and reckless
