Translation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ to be Handed Out to Every 16-year-old in Sweden

A Swedish translation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s We Should All Be Feminists – titled Alla Borde Vara Feminister and published by Albert Bonniers Förlag – was unveiled yesterday.

The text originated as a TEDx talk in 2013, in which Adichie combined her personal experience of growing up in Nigeria with an acute analysis of the complexity of modern feminism. Part of the talk was famously sampled by American pop star Beyoncé in the song “Flawless”.

The book launch was held at Norra Real secondary school in Stockholm, where it was announced that each second grade high school student in Sweden (16 year olds) will receive a copy – with more than 100 000 copies distributed so far.[+]

I grew up in a household where “airing dirty laundry” and “making a scene” were mortal sins, and where keeping your head down, working hard and playing by the rules were bedrock laws of survival. 

Amy Chua and her ilk argue that this is why Asians do so well in terms of GPA and college admissions; that may be, but it doesn’t do us any favors in terms of mental or emotional health…”

French: Using Bon Vs. Bien

BON and BIEN are often confused, because they have somewhat similar meanings and they can both be adjectives, adverbs, or nouns. BON is usually an adjective. It modifies a noun and means good, suitable, efficient, correct, useful, etc. BIEN means good, moral, right, healthy, etc., and can only be used as an adjective with copular (state-of-being) verbs such as être.

Il est bon étudiant. - He is a good student. Il est bien comme étudiant. - He is a good student. J'ai passé une bonne soirée. - I had a nice evening. Ça serait bien ! - That would be good! Il a bon cœur. - He has a good/kind heart. Très bien ! - Very good! Ce timbre n'est pas bon. - This stamp is not valid. Je suis bien partout. - I’m at ease anywhere. Luc est bon pour le service. - Luc is fit for (military) service. Ce n'est pas bien de dire ça. - It’s not nice to say that. Je le trouve bien. - I think it’s nice.

BIEN is usually an adverb. It means well or can be used to stress something. BON, in the rare instances where it is used as an adverb, means good or pleasant.

J'ai bien dormi. - I slept well. Il fait bon ici. - It’s nice/pleasant here. Il se porte bien. - He is in good health. Il fait bon vivre. - It’s good to be alive. Je vais bien, merci. - I am well, thank you. Il fait bon étudier. - It’s good to study. La radio ne marche pas bien. -  The radio isn’t working right. Ça sent bon ! - That smells good! Je le vois bien souvent. - I see him quite often. J'ai bien dit ça. - I *did* say that.

BON can refer to any sort of important or official piece of paper: form, bond, coupon, voucher, etc. BIEN means good in the general sense, and biens means goods (as opposed to services).

Homeland es de esas series que la gente se empeña en recomendar, aunque no como sugerencia, sino como deberes de lo socialmente aceptable.

Lo intenté, pero no puede acabar la primera temporada. Homeland es racista y toda la tensión de la primera temporada se sustenta en temer que el «héroe» se haya convertido a la religión y a la causa del enemigo. Mira, siente tensión ahora porque está rezando. ¡Virgen santísima! ¡Eso significa que ha vuelto convertido en terrorista! Total, islam y terrorismo son lo mismo, ¿verdad? Para qué vamos a aprovechar la oportunidad para reflejar la realidad del mundo islámico, para qué profundizar, para qué explicar qué es el islam en realidad y como la guerra ha destrozado los países donde se practica. Ah. Que eso dejaría a los héroes estadounidenses en mal lugar.

Será por series en el mercado.

Si hay algo que me gusta de la tele alemana más que de la española, es que allí se produce más contenido para ver en familia.

En este programa compiten seis cocineros aficionados (por lo general) a lo largo de cinco días, hasta que queda un ganador. Cada seis semanas se celebra la Championsweek, que reune a los seis ganadores de ese ciclo. El presentador y el juez son cocineros profesionales, de entre los 17 habituales que rotan semanalmente y a diario, respectivamente.

El presentador siempre ayuda a los concursantes cuando se atascan con una preparación, les enseña técnicas que les ayude a ir más rápido, les previene cuando el sabor o la cocción falla y les explica el porqué. El eliminado siempre se muestra muy deportivo. Siempre da las gracias por el trato y se alegra de participar.

Desconozco los entresijos de lo que pueda ocurrir entre bambalinas. Sí, a veces se ven tensiones entre los profesionales, pero son profesionales y no dejan que se note demasiado en pantalla. Sí, algunos se cuelan con las gracietas sexistas o con los estereotipos sobre otras culturas (en eso se parecen mucho Alemania y España). Sí, necesitan trabajar en cuanto a diversidad, porque de entre los 17 profesionales en rotación sólo hay una mujer, sólo un afrodescendiente y sólo un turco (esto tiene más delito porque las cifras de población turca y alemanes de ascendencia turca son altas).

Pero lo veo porque el ambiente no propicia el drama gratuito. Se esfuerzan porque la experiencia social, en el plató y para el espectador, sea agradable. Esa es la faceta de Alemania que más echo de menos en la tele española, salvo casos puntuales.

Me parece una gran opción para mantener mi alemán al día.

El calzonazos (1974)

Sinopsis de Filmaffinity:

«Don Juan Alcántara, que de boticario de pueblo se convirtió en financiero, está arruinado. No se atreve a confesárselo a la familia, ya que la opinión unánime de cuantos le conocen es de que es un calzonazos. Su falta de carácter es remediada por su médico, que le facilita la receta para que todos le obedezcan: fingir que padece crisis de locura y que si se le llevan la contraria puede llegar al homicidio».

Sinopsis de Fotogramas:

«Juan es el típico calzonazos dominado por su mujer, su cuñada, su hija, y  hasta por el mayordomo. No se atreve a levantar la voz y debe sufrir en  silencio la mala marcha de sus negocios».

Esta es una película cuyo argumento puede resumirse en que el protagonista está deprimido porque las mujeres con las que convive no le obedecen. La comedia surge debido a la presuposición de que el público sabe que el derecho y deber absoluto de mandar pertenece al hombre. El hombre de la casa es el que manda, si no, no es un hombre. Es un calzonazos. Como este no es el caso de don Juan Alcántara, su médico le ayuda a remediarlo mediante engaños: «si se le lleva la contraria puede llegar al homicidio», les dice mientras Juan descansa. Esa misma noche, satisfecho por los resultados, elige el camisón de su mujer y exige tener sexo. Ella no quiere y se resiste de varias maneras. Pero el hombre de la casa manda y hay que obedecerle porque si no, nos mata.

Pero no pasa nada, es sólo una película de 1974. España ha cambiado mucho desde entonces. Es sólo una película.

Sin embargo, la palabra calzonazos prevalece. Aún denota «hombre sumiso que deja que mande la mujer» y connota ridículo, por alejarse del modelo de masculinidad establecido (la figura de autoridad). Además, demoniza a su esposa por tener poder. Es decir, la supervivencia de este vocablo se basa en la supervivencia de los modelos binarios tradicionales que definen los roles de género. Es la misma estrategia de siempre de homogeneización social: ridiculizar al hombre por blando (la sumisión es femenina) y demonizar a la mujer por imponer su voluntad (la autoridad es masculina). Dicha inversión es el veneno que nos inyecta este tipo de «humor».

Don Juan Alcántara no se comporta de manera asertiva, sino pasiva. Su familia tampoco es asertiva, sino que actúa desde la agresividad. La película no trata del viaje emocional ni de la introspección que les lleva a ambas partes a cuestionarse su conducta o intentar acercarse a un modelo sano. El conflicto de esta película nos dice que la agresión es correcta mientras sea el hombre quien la administre. Las mujeres, los sobrinos no-binarios* y el servicio, que callen y obedezcan.

*Hay una escena en la que Juan dice que se ha dado un gran susto porque «le pareció haber visto a su sobrino vestido de mariquita».

Holy kiwi on a stick, I’ve been going through this stuff for months now. Honestly,  I worry that I might not be able to resist the geeky urges when Russian gets released on Duolingo. I know I’ll have to, since I’m already working on Nawat, Esperanto, and some French on the side–not counting English or German, we’re on a break.

Therapist: So I hear you’re with French now, how’s that going?

Me: I don’t know. Well, I guess things just seem to be moving a bit fast. I mean we’re already on the past tense and it’s been what, 3 lessons? I just don’t know if it’s going to last, you know? I feel like when I’m with French I’m neglecting German. And German was my first, I just … I feel like we’ve lost touch and I want to try to reconnect with German. But it’s like I can’t stop myself from fooling around with Finnish and Polish when I’m bored. I know they’re just distractions but I can’t seem to give them up. Don’t even get me started on Esperanto, we’ve been on a hiatus for months but now I can’t stop thinking about it. Spanish and I are still going strong but that’s not much of a consolation and with Russian getting released soon on Duolingo … *sigh*
