(from "Asia's Vaccine Disparity: Can We Inoculate Indonesia and Philippines? l Insight l COVID-19")
Tumblr media
The COVID-19. A pandemic that no one expected. A pandemic that destroyed and keeps on destroying lives. Millions of cases. Millions of deaths. Millions of people are having a hard time. Moreover, a lot of countries are suffering.
Tumblr media
The thumbnail of the documentary is the first one that will catch your eye at the first glance. A syringe. It gives the impression that we are all in need of vaccines. The documentary consists of people being interviewed with different emotions.
Tumblr media
The doctors and specialists who are seen to be worried because of the alarming cases. The survivors who went through a lot. The countrymen who want to be vaccinated. The interviewees are either on medium or close-up shots. Most clips have a faint color. Especially those people that were interviewed and who experienced difficulties with COVID-19 have low contrast and saturation, and its dominant color is the color grey. It conveys gloominess, conjures up the feeling of frustration, and is often associated with loss or depression. Meanwhile, some have the color blue. The color blue is mostly the color of the uniforms of doctors or healthcare workers which is, usually perceived as aloof and conveys serenity and peace, causing it to have a feeling of integrity, responsibility, and loyalty.
In July 2021, Indonesia became Asia's epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Delta variation driving infection rates. They have a very high fatality rate in Indonesia due to the lack of vaccines. And the delta variant has made its way to the Philippines, where it is rapidly spreading. Both countries are experiencing the crisis of today’s pandemic.
Tumblr media
According to the documentary, 75% of the vaccines are being accessed by developed countries while 5-10% are being accessed by Asian countries. Just by this data, it speaks volumes. And additionally, these are all facts.
To summarize, it is telling us; (1) Rich and developed countries have more advantages on vaccinating their people (2) Poorer countries, like in Asia, need help with vaccination because the cases kept on rising (3) This pandemic will show how capable the government is to handle the current situation (4) Each one of us needs to be vaccinated and lastly (5) The world lending a helping hand to each other must be the top priority in this pandemic.
Tumblr media
Rich countries intend to donate any remaining vaccines, however, due to the appearance of the delta variant, vaccine donations have halted. As a result, the target number of vaccines in both countries has not been met.
It shows that both countries are facing the same problem. The main problem here is the lack of vaccines distributed in both countries, and many developing countries around the world do not have the same capability or capability to offer such funds.
Tumblr media
It gives us the reality that Indonesia and the Philippines are suffering much more than the other countries at this time of age. Parts like wide shots of people getting admitted to hospitals and people getting vaccinated.
Additionally, social workers in Tondo, Manila giving help for people to get vaccinated on a steady cam and close-up shots.
Tumblr media
These are all such an eye-opener for everyone. There are some medical terms used that some viewers may not be familiar with but given the context, they may already have a rough understanding of what the speaker is trying to convey. There were important details that were shown for us to know, and to be aware of what is happening today. Details like different kinds of shots and visual graphs to show the difference in vaccine distribution. The audio fits the mood and also, the lighting of the interviewees is well-balanced either natural or artificial. They used transitions like fade in and out to show what’s the next clip that they will be presenting and that makes the documentary well-organized.
They even applied subtitles for those foreign speakers for us to understand what they are saying and the information given by the interviewee. There are different kinds of font sizes and colors that you can choose from. Overall, the edited documentary indicates sincerity toward its message.
Tumblr media
In this case, each one of us hopes everyone will be provided the best opportunity and access to COVID-19 regardless of their political views, position, and affluence, or their state of having wealth.
Tumblr media
In the ending, it shows that World leaders donated 817 million vaccines, and both countries ended up with a deal with Pfizer-BioNTech that has already begun. Supplies for 10% of the Indonesian population and 20% of the Philippine population have arrived, and the government is beginning to distribute them to ensure the safety of the people.
Also, it summarizes the documentary's important elements and brings the narrative's flow to a natural conclusion, leaving the audience feeling informed and hopeful that the virus will be cured sooner rather than later. But for us to achieve that, we must still cooperate. Get vaccinated as much as possible.
Let's get through this pandemic together.
