I made myself these mittens using the waistcoat stitch. I'm never going back to single crochet ever again, this is too gorgeous! It's so thick and sturdy too.

Last stitch
I hope this made sense, it took me a while to figure this out from other tutorials, I just learned how to do this last year.
Cabling With Double Crochets
Buckle up, this is gonna be a thread because Tumblr can’t post these all together without crashing LOL
This is a repeating pattern of two rows, beginning on a row of double crochet stitches.
Row 1
Yarn over once, and pull around the front of the “rope” created by the bottom double crochet. Finish as a double crochet. (Don’t forget to chain two stitches before starting this row!)

Double Crochet Stitch
This is a "tall" stitch, so when the previous row is ended, you need to chain 2, instead of 1.
Yarn over once, pull through 2. Yarn over again, pull through 2. I think of this like two single crochets stacked on each other.

Half-double Crochet Stitch (hdc)
Yarn over once, pull through three loops. This is one of my favourite stitches.

Second Row with sc
I just wanted to demonstrate how your project should look after the chain row. Don't forget to always chain one before starting a new row!
The last (10th) stitch often confuses people.

First Row and Single Crochet Stitch
I've chained 10, plus 1 (11). The extra stitch is to make room for the first stitch of the next row, so the first single crochet of the first row is in the 10th chain. My "extra" chain tends to get really snug, so it looks tiny here.
Here is a completed single crochet. Pull one loop through the "anchor" stitch (the 10th chain stitch), so you have two loops on your hook. Then hook a loop through those two to complete the stitch.
Here's the single crochet again, this time going into the next (9th) chain.
