Listen since this narrative has been brought back because of the incident in the Past Life finale of Grian betraying Gem, I just want to remind yall of this:

Not only were Pearl and Gem NOT actually teamed up in Secret Life, but Scott killed both of Pearl’s remaining day one allies and he was firmly on Gem’s team. He was Gem’s day one ally. When it came down to Gem and the Scotts vs Mounders both Gem and Pearl made it clear they weren’t leaving their day one team with the whole “You should be over here,” “Maybe you should be over here”, thing they did. Scar, meanwhile, had already been made an honorary Mounder by Pearl and Pearl had already offered her life to him. Pearl in no way betrayed Gem other than Gem’s expectations that despite everything her team had done to Pearl’s and the fact that they had never made an actual alliance, Pearl would for some reason still be loyal to her.

Also important to note if you’ve only seen Gem’s POV of Wild Life and not Pearl’s, they are telling wildly different stories about how Gem felt about the supposed “betrayal”. In Pearl’s POV, Gem openly admits to dragging out the drama on purpose to rile Pearl up and not actually being mad about it. Gem did NOT leave that part of the conversation in her POV.

Gem is one of the most fascinating Life Series POVs because she’s so conscious of narrative and expectation and no matter how often she fails to predict other players’ behaviors, she will always treat it as their fault rather than her own. Gem has already cast everyone’s roles in her story before they even properly act. Her not seeing that Pearl would stick with Scar and not Gem was Gem failing to see that her actual team had hurt Pearl’s and that Pearl is always loyal to her team above all, and that the murder camel had only been a temporary team up and not an actual alliance. But she needs to frame it as a betrayal in her own story because then it makes it Pearl’s failure and not hers. Gem must be great at the social game, she must be good at reading people and for her own narrative she must be able to read Pearl especially well. When she can’t do that, because no player is completely predictable, she cannot ever admit that she is the one that messed up. And that makes her incredibly interesting!!!!!

Hey can we be poetic about Grian declaring that a full moon was rising behind Pearl when it was actually a new moon?

Grian is seeing Pearl on red and announcing that she’s at her full power, that she’s prime to kill. But a new moon is when the moon is dark, nearly invisible. Pearl is four lives down already that session and she is frustrated and tired and drained and her bloodlust is coming from frustration at herself and her own incompetence as much as it is frustration at Jimmy for blowing her up.

Grian declares that Pearl is at her brightest and she is fading in front of him. Grian declares that Pearl is ready to kill and Pearl makes herself vanish. She dies invisible. Just like how they found her. Just like how they kept her.

Scarlet Pearl has always been Pearl at her emotional low, at her most isolated. The legend of Scarlet Pearl as a crazed killer was only ever a tool used to keep her alone, to push her further into the mold of crazy that everyone else wanted, to treat her like an attack dog in subsequent series. Scarlet Pearl never really existed the way the other players claim she did.

The moon is not full. The moon is gone.

Did they do this wrong? Should they have protected her?
