A Faustian Bargain

Work, Queen.
God bet the Devil he could not sway his most devoted subjects.
They played this game quite often, in different incarnations in history. It’s not a competition because, spoiler alert, no one wins in the end. One could argue the Devil gains souls and God won fear over man. But when tempted by Mephistopheles, Faust threw caution to the wind for his earthly desires.

“Oh shit he’s back, look busy.”
Mephistopheles did warn Faust of what he was getting into when he agreed, while God sat back waiting for the doctor’s repentance. Becoming younger, falling in love, being content, it all came and went. Faust still tried to save himself from the consequences, trekking through Hell, without balking the Devil’s path. Even with his commitment issues, premarital pregnancy, girlfriend’s suicide, and loss of his eternal soul.

You know the party don’t start ‘til I walk in.
How could God have possibly considered him; who without hesitation sold his heaven bound soul for a life of perfection and fulfillment, as his most respected soldier? Would the God-fearing man still sell his soul for a menial comfort? Of course he would.
Deep down a man is still his desires, God does not serve him.
The Devil is the Lord’s Knight, man is his pawn and jester.

Hell? Probably.
Me, Traipsing Through Hell.
What do you think Hell is like? Do you believe in it? Do you think you’ll go there? Why is our species obsessed with mortality, absolution, and eternal damnation?
I have no fucking clue. No one does, but they act like they do. Do this, do that, anger the God or the Universe, and you’ll get what’s coming to you. You know what I think people fear even more than eons of torture? Nothingness. Pointlessness. Emptiness. It’s far scarier to some that Christ didn’t walk through the Valley of Death to take our souls to Heaven. To others, they won’t be greeted by the charmed grin of the Devil. That we spent our whole lives wondering, wanting, and fearing the end; more so that there would be nothing after.

Lesser of Two Evils : Isolation & Disappointment
Then you could take the pessimists philosophy that Hell is Earth, that this is the worst it gets, and that bad things will happen to good people, or karma has it’s way with sinners. This isn’t about personal belief, it’s about inevitability. You fear dying no matter what. Pain, disappointment, rejection: that could be Hell. You could be in it, there could be nothing afterwards. You can accept it. That’s it.
Hell is a pretty loose concept tbh. Burn Responsibly.

Is Machiavelli cool?
N o b i r d m a s k s .
Niccolo was trying to get back into the good graces of the government by brown-nosing the emperor, but Leo X was the one who gave him a cushy job as a historiographer. Though the discouragement of the papacy and the misinterpretation of his works somewhat demonized him.

He’s why they call the Devil ‘Old Nick’
It’s not that Niccolo supported evil and treachery, he understood that there was a necessary evil in politics. He supported a republic over a principality, an idea admired by John Adams, and supported by modern Republicans. Being a saint could not make an effective ruler, he as to make sacrifices.

“What is up with my hat?”
Needless to say, I don’t find myself in good company of a Machiavellian, as I’m a bit of a pacifist, nor do I claim to be a saint. Manipulation, necessary evil, deceit, no thanks. I don’t tell people what they want to hear. I guess if you’re trying to climb the hierarchy, the ends do justify the means, but not in average life.

Plague ‘Doctors’
Even though this aspect of the plague does not pertain to the Black Death of the 14th century, I’m gonna talk about it.

These kooky costumes were actually first worn in Nepal.
Those beak-faced quacks didn’t exactly appear until the 17th century in France and the Netherlands, when people believed breathing bad air was the cause of plague. So the guys who shepherded sick people around and offered faulty cures for disease found a freaky way to ‘protect’ themselves from the ‘night air’.

I’m guessing it actually looked more like this.
They usually stuffed a gnarly concoction of flowers, herbs, spices, and straw into the beak as a natural sieve. Inhaling it is probably what gave them the idea to sell fake medicine and give bloodletting to dying people, and even healthy people, which bad them die quicker.. So yeah, they weren’t legit doctors at all.
*slurp*
Honestly, I just think their costumes are sweet and I’ve always wanted to do it for Halloween. But maybe dressing as a steampunk crow in a black robe isn’t the best choice for me. They make for fantastic art and inspiration, though.

Filthy Humans. . .

Honestly, I’m not sure what’s going on here.
Why do I want to study humanities? Simple. I want to be a boss ass bitch. Everyone act like they’re an expert on everything. We all want to be smarter above everyone else, and I’m just as guilty. But if I want to be preachy about something I better have the qualifications to back up my claims. When it comes to art, religion, and philosophy, people tend to stay on their side and refute and other opinion. History tends not to lie, this is the 21st century after all. Come on, what’s more satisfying than one-upping some bigot because ya know, you have a degree. That’s like a free pass to be a smart-ass.

Names of Jesus throughout the Bible.
If only he knew how popular he’d be, he’d have started his own religion or something.
My intentions aren’t entirely condescending, I’m genuinely fascinated with religion and psychology, plus it involves a lot more research to understand the capacity of someone who’s been dead for hundreds of years. A majority of what we’re most interested in studying is ourselves, because we’re too complicated to understand ourselves. Why do we create these stories, or art, or complex thoughts, or explanations for coming into existence? Why do we cling to what we individually believe is the truth even if it may be considered arrogant? That’s what I want to find out, It’s imperative for me to understand in order to handle stupid people.
Dear God, what have we created?
