Two books that I really want to read right now are Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson and Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid by Samantha Nutt. The authors both run organizations that are part of my We Are Here Movement. I’m incredibly inspired by the work they do to make the world a more just, kind place for all of us, but especially those who have been mistreated, condemned or forgotten.
Alicia Keys' reading recommendations for your long weekend:
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, Bryan Stevenson
Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid, Samantha Nutt

The Twyning by Terence Blacker
Efren is a young rat, unnoticed and timid among the kingdom of rats living in the London sewers. When the king dies, leaving the kingdom in upheaval, only Efren dares to journey into the human world, where he discovers a human doctor’s plan to destroy London’s entire rat population. Meanwhile, Peter, otherwise known as Dogboy, does odd jobs for both the scheming doctor and the town ratcatcher. But his gift for understanding animals — even rats — forces him to decide where his allegiances truly lie. Dogboy and Efren, along with the waifish girl Caz and her pet rat, Malaika, set out to test the strengths of friendship and loyalty against the gut-wrenching cruelties of the world.
In a harsh and dangerous world, a rat and a boy must each choose their way as their fates become inextricably linked.

This novel-in-verse—at once literary and emotionally gripping—follows the unfolding friendship between two very different teenage girls who share a hospital room and an illness.

Human beings always take the path of least resistance. It’s the few, the very few, who are willing to stand up to anything.
