I know this is because Daniel doesn’t have a canonically birthday but like
Why does the talamasca have a more accurate and precise date of birth for lestat who was born in 1700s rural france then the 2 time Pulitzer prize winning journalist Daniel Molloy
Tumblr media
Like what are they doing???? Shouldn’t his birthday be easily Google-able data in this universe as opposed to the 200 and something year old?!?!

A scene, a history...
Remember that moment when ldpdl was gashing over Paris and France and how unlike the US it was, less racism etc and then Daniel was like "i wonder what your Algerians counterparts (?) would say about that" and ldpdl was like "but i'm not Algerian," and that his point was just to say he felt comfortable in a less hostile enviroment. I wonder what that moment meant? it's def a nod at a certain period when many African-Americans would travel to or settle in France where they'd be treated better than in the US, but the Parralel were Algerians who were treated like shit in occupied Algeria and in France (still are, make no mistake) and this contrast was noted by some African Americans, some even said "the *slur for black guy* in France is the Algerian" and there was a kind of dilemma of what stance to take regarding this, ya know?
I'm wondering what's the point of that scene? Was it just an unimportant detail? it prob 100% flew over the heads of most fans since "Algeria who? don't know don't care", it was probably a way to say "hey look Daniel is smart and knows stuff" or that the show producers were or that they were making a side note for the shit that was happening to Algerians at the time? But, what if, it meant smth else with Louis? His reaction could mean exactly two things. One, at surface value, he ackowledges the contrast but on that old Dilemma he's from that side who prefers to ignore the suffrance of Algerians, maybe it's a way for the show for saying we know it's bad, but let's focus on the black American history part, it's an important part of their history and the main character and we can adress sm in one show.
Or, and that's the thing that keeps me wondering, maybe Daniel asked this from Louis for a completely different purpose, since we know he's been harassing Louis all along the interview, the "was it raining Louis" moments, maybe he's trying to dodge his real character under his cool constructed façade? I've seen smn say smth around the lines of "Louis up to the point of becoming a vampire, was abusing his own kind, his vampirism journey is a metaphor to that and him slowly realizing his mistakes and coming clean from his bad way, a second chance to be the best version of himself which he would prob never had in his short human lifespan, that is what he was thanking Lastat for in the end" so maybe it had to do with that. Maybe it's a way of saying Louis is selfish, he choose to ignore the bad sides of things as long as they were convinient to him , he did it over and over again, and here's another instance to that.
Perhaps that's why they thought it was important to note that detail, don't get me wrong; i think our tragedy is primordial, not only to us but to the whole global south, the Algerian revolution was a major turning point in the history of Africa and the third world, it came right after the "Indochina War." and was the last shot at french colonialism. But, if Americans know anything about the latter it's because the US later invaded Vietnam, while they had a passive stance with Algeria (like most of the western block, supported France with the NATO) so there's no way they'd hear about the Algerian occupation or liberation, like most countries the us haven't directed invaded or been involved with. I think the creators also knew that, that scene was either a wink at any attentive listeners and history nerds, Arabs/muslims/Africans fans who'd relate to it, or Algerians (?? I doubt it). Or, it was another glimpse at what could be Louis outside of his own POV and narrative, another thing for the watcher to dissect and analyze and interpret.
Or I could be overthinking it, but that's what I do plus I'm glad for that that mention, made up for that "French-white" comment, French ppl are as white as snow my friends, there's nothing special abt them, maybe you have different experiences coming from outside, Algerians also thought Americans were another kind of white when they came in North Africa during ww2, it's all a question of perspective. Also, if it has any value in analyzing Louis's personality further in preparation for s3, than I'm glad, consider it my contribution to the Fandom ig.
