1500s WOMEN - PART 1

The 1500s was a century of innovation when it came to hairstyles, with the introduction of both metal hair pins (1545) and wigs (1572). These pins were used to hold wires and pads in place that essentially acted as scaffolding for the shaped hairstyles popular during this period. The religious modesty of previous centuries was cast aside for the first time, with young married women now uncovering their tresses. The ideal hair was curly and fair or red, a fad influenced by British monarch Queen Elizabeth I. CC links and reference images under the cut.

1500s WOMEN - PART 2

The 1400s gave way to the incredibly iconic accessories of the 1500s, namely hoods (both Gabled and French) and ruffs. While the end of the Tudor era saw the popularity of headdresses decline in favour of uncovered hair decorated with jewels, diadems, and feathers, prior to that headdresses were a vital part of court dress. In fact, the style of hood worn was often used as a political statement amongst the nobility. Hats had always been in fashion for men, but the 16th century saw them also become a fashion staple for women. CC links and reference images under the cut.

I wanted to try to create a sims legacy challenge. Turns out, it's a bit more difficult than I expected...

Insect Legacy Challenge

Do you like learning about insects or just making sims in pretty colours? Maybe some other challenges seem stale or just not right?

Well take a look at the Insect Legacy Challenge, a ten generation legacy with a focus on colourful insects and their famous traits.

Some rules and suggestions:

Each heir should represent the insect (of course you don't have to do that but it's a fun aspect that could give you ideas)

The heirs' or their spouses' gender doesn't matter (unless stated otherwise)

Cheats can be used just not excessively (personally it makes it too easy)

You can live anywhere you'd like (unless stated otherwise)

Each generation must complete everything written in the bottom left corner. Only then can you move on to the next heir

I recommend keeping the lifespan at normal

If anyone actually tries this and wants to share their journey, you can use the #theinsectlegacy (I think no one is using that hashtag for other things)

Sugar Rush Macaroon Legacy

I've been wanting to make this legacy challenge for literal years now and I've finally finished it! Now you might be thinking "Isn't it 'Macaron' and not 'Macaroon'?" NOPE! Macarons are made from almonds while Macaroons are made from coconut. Now that that's out of the way- This challenge is based off of different Macaroon flavours that I love! I was originally going to call it The Bakers Dozen but I burnt myself out and couldn't possibly make one more generation. Without further ado, here are the rules! RULES! -CC is allowed and so are mods as long as the mods aren't too cheaty. -Feel free to change any rules you don't like in order to make it more fun for you! -You don't HAVE to complete the aspiration for each gen UNLESS it says so in the rules! -I've given each gen color themes but you don't have to follow them! -I haven't play tested this yet so it might not be perfect -If you give it a try please link back to my rules or tag me! -If you use simsta you can find me @ candlelightsimmer

NOT ANOTHER RAINBOW LEGACY CHALLENGE

Welcome to this ten generation legacy challenge based on vibrant colors! Inspired by all the other color themed legacies out there, because who doesn’t like basing their sims whole personality on a color (I know I’m a sucker for it lol). I won’t put a long list of rules here, because at the end of the day I want this to be your gameplay and story that you create. I will suggest that you follow each generation, but if something isn’t to your liking, by all means, change it for yourself. With that being said, don’t claim this challenge as your own, even if you tweak it. Remember, though, legacy challenges are all about having fun!

Generation One: Licorice.

You never stay in one place too long. As a criminal, you’re always on the run. You don’t commit to anything. The only thing you’ve ever truly loved and committed to is your career. When it comes to actual love, you dip as soon as it seems like things might get serious. You don’t like being that close to people, letting people in like that. You can’t trust anyone, or so you thought.

Traits: Evil, Non-Committal, Romantic. (Additional: Self-Assured, Mean)

Aspiration: Serial Romantic.

Career: Criminal.

Have more enemies than friends.

Have a child with an enemy.

Move to a different world each time you age up.

Only your child(ren) can be your partner in crime.

Get caught cheating at least once.

Max your career.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Mischief, Handiness and Programming skills.

Generation Two: Pearl.

From the time you could hold things, you were coloring, drawing, painting, anything that could help you express yourself. You are the exact opposite of your parent. Maybe you’re like the other one? You wouldn’t know, though. You never met them, nor heard a single truth about them. That doesn’t matter, though, because as soon as you can, you move out of your parents home so that you can start your own life and family. Love isn’t easy, as you don’t truly know what it’s supposed to look like, but with how kind and caring you are, it almost comes easy to you.

Traits: Creative, Cheerful, Family-Oriented. (Additional: Loyal, Good)

Aspiration: Big Happy Family. 

Career: Painter.

Complete the Artist Prodigy as a child.

Move to a different world from your parent.

Marry someone with amazing compatibility (or someone with similar traits).

Have 5 children.

Have a bowling night with the family at least twice a week.

Max your career.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Painting, Parenting and Bowling skills.

Generation Three: Latte.

You come from a big family, and you’ve always loved every bit of it. However, nothing can compare to the love you have for fitness. As a teenager, you become a simfluencer who models athletic wear and shows off your healthy lifestyle. As a Young Adult, you constantly have dogs. You tell yourself all you need is dogs, until you meet another fitness buff who you end up having a baby with.

Traits: Active, Dog Lover, Vegetarian. (Additional: Ambitious, Outgoing)

Aspiration: Friend of the Animals.

Career: Simfluencer.

Have a good relationship with your parents and siblings.

Go to the gym four times a week.

Change your hairstyle once a week.

Have at least 3 dogs as a YA.

Become a B-lister.

Have a baby with someone you meet at the gym (bonus points if they have the active skill).

Max your career.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Fitness, Entrepreneur, Media Production, and Pet Training skills.

It was hard for you to relate to your parents, as they were much more outgoing and sociable than you were. Keeping up conversations and being around people always made you feel drained. It’s no surprise that you’re the first in your family to go to university and you end up working in engineering. Your best friend, perhaps lover as well, is a robot you built. Seems like a good life to you.

Traits: Loner, Overachiever, Socially Awkward. (Additional: Bookworm, Geek)

Aspiration: Nerd Brain.

Career: Engineer.

Attend university.

Build a servo bot.

Be romantic partners with the servo.

Woohoo with the servo in the rocketship.

Generation Five: Emerald.

You want to make the world a better place for the next generations. Everything you do involves Mother Earth. You live off the land, garden and fish for your food. You raise chickens for your eggs and cows for your milk. You also fabricate and make things for yourself, others and your animals. Some of the things you create you sell on Plopsy for income. You have a baby with someone you’re engaged to be married to. But as soon as you can, you pack up and leave them, taking the baby with you.

Traits: Loves Outdoors, Maker, Freegan. (Additional: Green Fiend, Recycle Disciple)

Aspiration: Master Maker.

Career: Plopsy Seller.

Live in Evergreen Harbor (If you don’t already, move there as a YA).

Live in Port Promise, where you must make the eco footprint green.

Additional Challenge: have the Simple Living lot challenge in Evergreen.

Knitted and Fabricated items can be sold on Plopsy when you need simoleons.

Get engaged and try for a baby until one of you is pregnant.

Once you have reached green for the eco footprint; break off the engagement, take the baby and move to Sulani.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Knitting, Fishing, Gardening and Fabrication skills.

Generation Six: Turquoise.

Growing up on a beautiful beach with your single parent doing everything for you made you into a spoiled brat. The only thing you actually want to do, besides sleep and chill, is fashion photography. You have a real eye for fashion. Although, you don’t really have a knack for picking up work. You’re more likely to be suntanning than actually doing your job. The few times you do accept a job, you fall in love with the model. Instead of falling happily in love together, you are constantly fighting, and to make matters worse, you have a kid together. Something neither of you wanted.

Traits: Self-Absorbed, Lazy, Hates Children. (Additional: Jealous, Squeamish)

Aspiration: Beach Life.

Career: Freelance Fashion Photographer.

Accept a job once a week.

Have a baby with one of the models that has the Mean, Hot-Headed or Evil trait.

Only have 1 child.

Have a bad relationship with your child.

Move to San Myshuno as an Adult.

Max your career.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Charisma and Photography skills.

Generation Seven: Ruby.

You constantly heard your parents fighting over something. They were never not fighting. You found your solace in music; listening to it, writing it, playing instruments, just everything about it. You get married young just so you can move out. But you’re in love with a musician on the side. You’re not really sure if you should keep seeing them, or stick by your spouse. You never really were good with decisions, especially ones that could really impact your future.

Traits: Music Lover, Hot-Headed, Childish. (Additional: Erratic, Dance Machine)

Aspiration: Musical Genius.

Career: Live off tips and fame.

Marry and move out as a YA.

Have a bad relationship with your parents.

Cheat on your spouse with someone who plays an instrument or sings.

Only earn money from tips when you play instruments or sing in public.

Have either a dance battle or karaoke night once a week.

Obtain fame, at least c-lister, from music.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Singing, Dancing and any instrument skills.

Generation Eight: Magenta.

You’ve always used humor and pranks as a way to cope with everything going on in your life. No one but your best friend really gets you. It’s hard for you two to get over being friends when you realize that you have feelings for each other. Except, after having a baby together, you realize you were better off as friends. You still civilly raise the child, just not under the same roof anymore.

Traits: Paranoid, Goofball, Gloomy. (Additional: Clumsy, Cat Lover)

Aspiration: Chief of Mischief.

Career: Social Media.

Have a childhood best friend.

Have a baby with said best friend.

You and your best friend fall out, but you still raise the child civilly.

Have at least 1 cat.

Max your career.

Complete your aspiration.

Master the Comedy, Writing and Mischief skills.

Generation Nine: Tangerine.

In the meantime, you enjoy the time you spend there; skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, sightseeing, etc. You dream of your vacations while at work.

Traits: Adventurous, Kleptomaniac, Bro. (Additional: Lactose Intolerant, Materialistic)

Aspiration: Mt. Komorebi Sightseer.

Career: Law.

Take 2 vacation days a week to go to Mt. Komorebi.

Marry and have children with someone who lives in Mt. Komorebi

Continue living in San Myshuno until you retire and move to Mt. Komorebi.

Hi I was wondering about your thoughts on Hanfu in television dramas? How accurate overall do you think they are? Thanks!

Hi! I shared my thoughts on the subject here and here, so check those posts out if you haven’t already! ^^

Overall, I think Hanfu in Chinese television dramas are about 60% accurate (I might be too optimistic though). Of course, some dramas are more accurate than others, depending on how much the creators care about historical accuracy. The inaccuracies tend to be caused by: 1) mixing up fashions from different Chinese dynasties (and occasionally different cultures), 2) taking creative liberties with design & style, 3) adding modern/non-Hanfu elements like lace, etc. I don’t think these actions are necessarily bad - sometimes they can enhance the visual aspect of the drama. However, if the inaccuracies are particularly egregious, it does annoy me. I do think the accuracy of Hanfu in Chinese dramas is improving though!

Let’s take the 2019 Chinese television drama “The Legend of Haolan” as an example:

This drama is set during the Warring States period, and the costumes are generally stylistically accurate for the time period, consisting mainly of cross-collared one-piece robes such as Quju and Zhiju:

I like how the costumes utilize deep and rich color tones, which are in line with the earthy palette of Warring States clothing (don’t know about this hair though):

The embroidery and patterns on the costumes are also reminiscent of fashions during and around the Warring States period: 

There was a lot of effort put into the accessories, from the beautiful dangling jade Jinbu (waist ornaments)…:

….to the impressive headgear for men:

Overall, “Legend of Haolan” is an example of a typical Chinese drama that, while not entirely historically accurate, has put effort into recreating the essence of the fashion of the time period that it’s set in. For accuracy I give it a 60%, but for sheer beauty and aesthetics I give it a 90%.

Meaningful gameplay guide for The Sims 4 ~ PART 2

#2 How to make your sim’s stories interesting and how to keep yourself playing

My niece, who also is a big fan of the sims, asked me an interesting sims questions last week: ‘What is your goal when playing the sims 4?’. I was embarrassed that I, someone who played more than 1000 hours of the sims 4, couldn’t answer this question right away. Because what is your goal when playing the sims if you don’t do a challenge? The purpose is having fun, but the goal…? After (way too) long thinking and analyzing I realized I don’t have a goal I want to achieve when playing The Sims. But what approach/method do I use in my let’s plays to make The Sims 4 have meaningful gameplay?

The way to make a let’s play interesting for me if it constantly gives you the thought: ‘What will happen next?’. Like watching an exciting movie. What I mean by this and how I accomplish this in my game will I tell you in this post in 3 relatively simple steps.

The base for meaningful gameplay is interesting sims. I have already made a post about this and you can find it here. You don’t have to read that post first, but I do recommend it. I will refer to it one or two times and my example sims Billy, Kaitlyn and Zoe are introduced there.

Bad Townies Outfit Fix

Manually or automated!

I have been playing the sims 4 and using MC command center (MCCC) for years now but I only recently learned MCCC  can be used to stop the invasion of the ugly townie outfits. For me this means no more time spending hours on making over townies because their ridiculous outfits break the immersion.

I will address three ways in which you can use MCCC to fix your townies, two are automated and together they fix all outfits, and one is manual. I explain how to use them in this post. All three of these methods use outfits saved by MCCC. Because saving these outfits is a lot of work, in the end, my document with saved outfits can be downloaded so you don’t have to go and save a bunch of outfits yourself! (No ad-link/SimFileShare). Because we all play in a different way, there are some different files to choose from. These outfits can be automatically used by MCCC if placed together in your mods folder. More is explained after the cut.

Note that these are not the only methods to fix ugly townies, you could also use files that disable ugly clothes for random, a mccc setting so townies will come from your library, etc. However, I won’t be addressing those methods here, because I like the method I will describe here the most. And this post is already super long :)

Hanna: (hesitant) More than words... What do you mean by this?

Martin: (sighs) It starts with a long story... I'll try to give you a speedy summary. Matilda is my cousin. She came to live with me when her mother got into trouble, and I eventually adopted her.

Martin: Okay... so yesterday, Tilly said she hates me, and it's not even the first time. She just exaggerates, but I took it too seriously this time. Then, she pushed a few more buttons with her attitude. As a result, I told her I would take her back to her mother… Martin: I know more than well that going back to Harriet is what she fears the most in her life. I promised her a better life and that she would never have to deal with Harriet again, and then I said what I said. Honestly, I would never trust such a person again. So why should she? Martin: I lost her trust and will never get it back… (stops, turns to Hanna) Did I even answer your question, or am I just rambling?

Hanna: (softly) No, I got my answer. I want to say that everything will be fine, but that would be a lie. Martin: (nods) Hanna: Trust is delicate, like a mirror. Once it's broken, the cracks are always there. (thoughtful) Maybe words really aren't your strong point… But maybe actions are. Martin: What do my actions have to do with anything? Hanna: Well, you don't always have to say something. Actions can heal, too. Martin: So what do you suggest I do? Hanna: Be there for her. Consistently. Even when she says she hates you more than anything in the world. And be patient because nothing's going to change overnight.

Martin: Quite specific advice. Hanna: (shrugs) Martin: What's the story behind it? Hanna: Nothing worth telling. Martin: Then how do I know your advice will work? Hanna: You just have to trust me. Martin: Hmm...

Hanna: Would it help if I told you that you're already much closer to redemption than my father will ever be, and with my advice, your road will be shorter? Martin: Maybe. Hanna: Well, I already said it and don't plan to repeat myself.
