Talmud Study Resources
This will hopefully be an ever growing list. If you have any Talmud study resources you like (online or in print), please send them to me and I’ll update accordingly!
The most important resource for study is community, so if you have a local synagogue, check if they have study group
Free Online Resources
Sefaria Mishnah — reading the Mishnah first can make the Gemara easier
Sefaria Talmud — the go-to free online translation. I believe it uses the Koren translation
Daf Yomi — daily image of the day’s daf with audio of it being read (not translated as far I can tell)
New addition! Hadran Courses — Absolutely top notch courses to give you the tools to study Talmud. Cannot recommend this enough.
Books
Your local Shul’s library probably has a copy of these or similar books! They are far from the only books on these topics
Reference Guide to the Talmud by Rabbi Steinsaltz
I love this book. It has the answers for almost every question a beginner could ask, from how a page of Talmud is laid out to the basics of Mishnaic Hebrew and Aramaic
The Practical Talmud Dictionary by Yitzhak Frank
Not a comprehensive dictionary of Mishnaic Hebrew and Aramaic, but it has a lot and is simple to use
Grammar for Gemara & Targum Onkelos: An Introduction to Aramaic by Yitzhak Frank
Sister text to The Practical Talmud Dictionary. Good for beginners with at least some knowledge of Hebrew
Everyman’s Talmud by Abraham Cohen
Basic overview of topics covered in the Talmud. Very dense
The Essential Talmud by Rabbi Steinsaltz
More digestible than Cohen’s book, but not as comprehensive

it really sucks how the jumblr tag is genuinely unusable rn due to SOME PEOPLE using it to post praise/support for the killer of the two israel embassy workers and/or general antisemetism... i wish i knew of a better, more private tag. but alas :/

I read a piece today that described the tradition of Judaism as one of Memory.
It is not just a religion or an ethnicity. it has been built up from the very beginning as a tribe that struggled through the desert to learn how to find their way through life.
A group of people that saw the rise and fall of small and large empires and tribes. They formed traditions that helped them survive. That kept them from assimilation.
And when they were scattered across the globe, their memory never faded.
From Ashkenazi to Sephardic, to Mizrahi to Ethiopian, they not only passed on the survival and tradition of their current way of life, but they passed on tradition from the very beginning.
We remember things as if they happened yesterday. We still mourn the fall of the temple as if we were on that long trek into Babylon. We still remember the bitterness of being slaves in Egypt. Is it any wonder that the Shoah still feels like it was not even one generation away?
Memory as a culture is such a unique and amazing thing. It brings everyone together and puts us all there at each moment.
As someone with memory issues and time problems, being able to count my weeks by the Sabbath has helped me stay grounded. Being able to say "I was at Sinnai" or "We left Egypt" has helped me to put myself into the tradition and understand this amazing tribe.
Every step of the way, we were all there and because of this, we remember.
#its such a cool thing to think about and i love this part of judaism sm#it makes time seems so weird and both transient and forever

I think I'm (almost) scheduled for conversion this summer (?) it doesn't feel real, it feels like I should have done a lot more work than i actually did to get to this point.
Like what do you mean just showing up to services pretty much every other week and making friends and finishing a class is enough to convert??? it feels like i should have spent more time studying and learning etc
also i still have to see if the trip would be before i leave for work over the summer (and if it was that would be really silly because my first 2 months as a jew would be spent in a completely new and unfamiliar environment)
