Cryptid & Creature Drawtober Day 13—Owlman
Sightings of humanoid owls have been reported for decades if not longer. One particular sighting which was widely publicized was that of the the Owlman of Mawnan which was seen in the 1970s in the Cornish town of Mawnan in the UK. Two little girls reported seeing the creature flying around the tower of St. Mawnan and St Stephen’s Church. Their father was apparently so spooked by the encounter that he packed the family up and cut their vacation short.

The Girt Dog of Ennerdale is described as a skinny, brown dog found in Cumberland England. The Girt Dog of Ennerdale is described as a skinny, brown dog with dark stripes running down its back, pointed ears, and a long tail and snout. The Girt Dog of Ennerdale was said to have killed over 400 sheep in the course of 6 in months in 1810 by eating their organs and draining their blood. The local farmers even stopped their daily tasks in order to hunt the the dog until eventually they shot and killed and killed and they paraded the carcass around town before having stuffed. Sadly though the now taxidermied Girt Dog of Ennerdale was eventually thrown out due to moth holes. Many people believe that the Girt Dog of Ennerdale was actually a Thylacine which is very odd since Thylacines do not live in the UK.

Wulver
The wulver kept to itself and was not aggressive if left in peace. Unlike their werewolf counterparts, the Wulver is not a shapeshifter and wasn’t a human from the start. It appears to be a sort of immortal spirit. Jessie Saxby, in Shetland Traditional Lore writes:
The Wulver was a creature like a man with a wolf’s head. He had short brown hair all over him. His home was a cave dug out of the side of a steep knowe, half-way up a hill. He didn’t molest folk if folk didn’t molest him. He was fond of fishing, and had a small rock in the deep water which is known to this day as the “Wulver’s Stane”. There he would sit fishing sillaks and piltaks for hour after hour. He was reported to have frequently left a few fish on the window-sill of some poor body.

Dobhar Chu
Tumblr media
Although Irish folklore is littered with legendary ghoulish water creatures, few are as scary as Dobhar Chu (pronounced do-war coo). Considered by some to be Ireland’s version of the famous Loch Ness monster, Dobhar Chu is a mythical lake monster that has inhabited lakes of the British Isles since ancient times.
The name, Dobhar Chu, roughly translated means ‘water hound’, or ‘hound of deep’. Thought to be a cross between a giant otter and a hound, Dobhar Chu is about seven-foot-long, or about the size of a crocodile. In fact, it is also known as the Irish crocodile.
Some believe the ancient Irish creature of folklore, Dobhar Chu, is like an Irish Loch Ness monster…

Cryptid & Creature Drawtober Day 17—Steller’s Sea Ape
In 1741, around the Shumagin Islands in Alaska, German biologist Georg Steller observed a creature in the water near his ship. It was seal-like in shape with a dog-like head and a tail fin shaped like a shark. He claimed the creature was very playful and inquisitive about the ship and its occupants. Steller’s encounter went on for a couple of hours until he decided to try and collect the creature for study—he shot at it twice, missing both times, and the animal swam away.
While likely just a misidentified seal, similar creatures have been reported since Steller’s sighting. And it’s probably best to keep your distance just in case they hold grudges.

Cryptid of the Day: Blue Mountain Lion (Longer)
Description: There’s a lot of back and forth over when the Blue Mountain Panther was first seen. Some say 1926, while others say 1999. 2001 was definitely when the creature gained media attention, when a freedom of information request revealed that Australian wildlife officials launched an investigation of sightings of big cats in the Blue Mountains in 1999. Interest peaked in 2002, when a teenage boy claimed to have been attacked by the cat, receiving deep lacerations, which resulted in a mass report of 77 sightings over the years.
