Hampta Pass with Chandratal Lake Trek – A 5-Day Himalayan Story You’ll Never Forget
This trek is a five-day journey through changing landscapes and shifting emotions. With every step, nature surprises you — playful one moment, wild the next — always stunning in its raw beauty.
This adventure, brought to life by Himalayan Frontiers — a name locals and trekkers trust deeply — is perfect whether you’re lacing up your boots for the first time or returning to the trails you love. It’s not extreme, but it’s no walk in the park either — just enough of a challenge to make the views and stories you take home feel truly earned.
Why This Trek? Why Now?
Here’s the thing: not all treks are created equal. Some offer lush forests, others snowfields, and a few, stark high-altitude drama. Hampta Pass gives you all of it — in just five days.
It starts in the green folds of the Kullu Valley. You cross bubbling rivers, sleep under starlit skies, wake up to birdsong. Then the landscape begins to shift. Trees give way to boulders. The air thins. And then, almost suddenly, you’re standing at Hampta Pass — 14,000 feet high — staring down into the vast, barren Lahaul valley.
Just when you think the trek can’t get any better, there’s Chandratal — a high-altitude lake so serene, so unreal, it looks photoshopped in real life. Read More

Where Is Hampta Pass?
Tucked into the Pir Panjal range of Himachal Pradesh, Hampta Pass sits at about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet). The trail begins near Manali, specifically from Jobra, a short drive away. From there, it’s all boots-on-ground, one step at a time.
You don’t need mountaineering skills. You just need a love for the outdoors and the will to walk through landscapes that change almost like chapters in a novel.
Best Time to Go
Mid-June to late September is your golden window.
June: Still snowy, wild and white.
July: Meadows come alive. Flowers bloom. Rivers swell.
August–September: Weather stabilizes. Chandratal becomes more reliably accessible. Read More

Is Hampta Pass a difficult trek?
The Hampta Pass trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty, making it a great choice for beginners with good physical fitness. Spanning a total distance of approximately 28 km, trekkers typically cover 6–8 km per day, except on the third day, which includes a longer stretch of about 13 km.
While not technically demanding, the trek requires solid leg and core strength, along with the mental resilience to push through challenges that the mountains may present. Mental preparedness is just as important as physical readiness.
River Crossings
One of the more demanding aspects of the trek involves river crossings. There are two such crossings along the trail, both of which can be intimidating due to swift water flow. Trekkers must stay focused, maintain a good grip, and most importantly, follow the instructions of the trek leader carefully to navigate these safely.
Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect anyone, regardless of physical fitness. Common symptoms include:
Nausea or dizziness
Headaches
Stomach cramps
To reduce the risk of AMS, it's essential to monitor your body, stay hydrated, and be vocal about any symptoms. Acclimatization walks and a diet rich in fluids are highly recommended. If you’re prone to motion sickness, consult your doctor beforehand and consider starting a preventive medication course before departing for the trek. https://www.himalayanfrontiers.com/activities/hampta-pass-trek

Have you done a Hampta Pass trek?
Trekking. Just hearing the word brings a rush of emotions—excitement, curiosity, and a little bit of fear. I had always heard stories about the Himalayas, but nothing could prepare me for the experience of actually being there. My first-ever trek to Hampta Pass, with my friend Harsh, is a memory I’ll cherish forever.
✈️ From Kolkata to the Himalayas – With Himalayan Frontiers
Our journey started with a flight from Kolkata to Delhi, and then a long scenic bus ride to Manali. For ease, comfort, and complete peace of mind, we chose to book the trek through Himalayan Frontiers, a local tour company known for their expertise in Himalayan adventures. It turned out to be the best decision we made.
From the very beginning, everything was taken care of—accommodation, permits, meals, logistics, and above all, safety. All we had to do was show up and soak in the experience.
🌄 Meeting the Team and Fellow Trekkers
In Manali, we met our group of 26 trekkers, from different parts of India and even from abroad. Most of us were strangers, but all of us shared the same excitement. It was comforting to see the Himalayan Frontiers team handling everything so smoothly—from the gear checks to explaining the trek plan. Their calm confidence instantly made us feel safe.
🚙 Off-Roading Adventures & First Campsite
After breakfast, we left Manali in jeeps. There was no mobile network, and honestly, it felt like a gift. As we bumped through 42 hairpin bends, laughter and nervous excitement filled the air.
Eventually, we reached the starting point of our trek. From here, the real adventure began—boots on, backpacks ready, hearts racing.
We reached our first campsite by the river. Despite the shared tents and minimal space, the joy of being in the mountains overpowered everything. That first night under the stars was pure magic.
🌲 Deep into Nature – Guided by Experts
Every morning started with health checks and warm encouragement from our trek leader. Himalayan Frontiers ensured our well-being at every step. Whether it was checking oxygen levels or advising on hydration, they made sure we were always fit to continue.
The trails took us through lush green forests, across gushing streams, and up rocky ridges. The higher we went, the more the landscape transformed. Grass gave way to boulders, and soon patches of snow appeared. Nature was changing all around us, and we were part of that rhythm.
🍜 Maggi at 5°C & Eco-Friendly Travel
At one of the higher campsites, we had Maggi noodles in freezing weather—it had never tasted better. Washing utensils in freezing water was tough, but we managed. Himalayan Frontiers follows a strict eco-friendly policy—we packed out all our waste, ensuring we left no trace behind. That commitment made me respect them even more.
🏔️ The Hampta Pass Moment
After four days of trekking, we reached Hampta Pass. The weather wasn’t in our favor—it was cloudy and drizzling, with no views. But reaching there was the true reward. We stood together, shouted in celebration, and waited for every last member of our group to arrive.
It didn’t matter that the view was hidden—the joy of making it together meant everything.
⛰️ Coming Down, Carrying Memories
Descending was faster but trickier. Gravity helped, but control was key. With each step, we felt lighter—physically and emotionally. That evening, back at the final camp, we celebrated with certificates and shared stories. There was laughter, hugs, and even a few tears.
From strangers to a close-knit group, we had become a little family in the mountains.
💭 A Trek That Changed Me
This trek wasn’t just about reaching the top—it was about learning, growing, and disconnecting to reconnect with what truly matters. In those few days, the mountains taught me humility, patience, and peace.
And throughout this journey, Himalayan Frontiers made it all feel easy, safe, and deeply rewarding. From logistics to health checks to creating a community on the trail—they were the quiet force behind our unforgettable adventure.
This was my first trek, but definitely not my last. The Himalayas have a way of calling you back, and now I know I’ll keep returning—with Himalayan Frontiers by my side.
