a little rant about criticism and art

what is your response to the cat in this picture? i feel like most people are quick to say "it looks perfectly fine, what are you talking about? your art is so good!" when people vent about their work... and while that's nice & has its place, sometimes it's not what we need to hear as artists. if someone upset about their own art, it helps to pose the question, "why?" encouragement is integral to artistic growth, but so is self awareness. if you draw something and it looks bad, it can feel really upsetting when you ask for feedback and they brush off your concerns. saying it looks fine, when we know for a fact there's something off. personally, i feel seen when someone asks me, "why? what about it seems wrong to you?"

art doesn't need to be perfect, but most artists wanna aim for appeal. being told, "there's nothing to improve on, it's great!" upon being asked for criticism can be some of the most demotivating shit ever. ultimately, i try my best to be honest with my friends when they ask for feedback. if someone is actively trying to improve their work, it's important for their peers to help them reach for the stars. i feel like i'd be depriving my friends of integral growth if i didn't tell them, "hey, this arm looks weird. here's how to fix it!" once in a while. it's okay to not like how a piece of art turns out. it's okay to have criticism towards your work. it's part of growing as an artist to look at something you made, and think, "i could've done this better." it's also okay to (nicely) tell someone how to fix their issue, or give them tips for the future. you're okay. you're an artist and this is normal.

Got unlimited on twitter I can only view 1k tweets until I get limited and have to wait a full damn day! Awesome, but if you view under a thousand does it reset because a new day started or does it continue until I’m limited..
