this shot is genuinely so devastating to me because he’s so terrified.
he’s terrified to say that he loves el.
he’s terrified that if he doesn’t say that he loves her, she’ll die.
he’s terrified that if he does say he loves her, he won’t be able to turn back.
he’s terrified that maybe he doesn’t love her the way he should.
he’s terrified of his true feelings.
he’s terrified of himself.

Twisting the knife
Saw two posts recently highlighting how Will holds up a mirror to Mike, and lets him see himself as the loving (and loveable) hero he really is.
What's tragic about the van scene (besides what's already been said), is that Will BURIES who HE IS in order to do it:

as Dustin says...
trying to impress their love interests with new clothes/changing themselves to impress someone else aka not being themselves and making the relationship fail because of that + the writers not making it work out when their characters do this

I'm sick of the constant refrain from mainstream ST fans who say puritanical nonsense like: “It's gross that people ship Byler when they're two kids."
And yet people have been shipping Milkvan since Season 1 when they were 12. When Milkvan kissed in S1 it was considered "cute."
People shipped Lucas and Max since Season 2 when they were 13, and again squealed over them dancing together and them kissing. And of course no one had a word to say about Dustin and Susie being together at 14 in Season 3.
But no, apparently it's a problem when Will (who just turned 15 in Season 4) is confirmed to have feelings for his best friend.
Not to mention in Season 5 all the kid cast will be 16. You know roughly the age Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan were in Season 1/2. And no one bats an eye at Nancy and Steve making out and even having sex, but the idea of people wanting Mike and Will to even kiss is "too much."
I'm so over the double standards. It's homophobia plain and simple.

“And in conclusion, Byler is endgame,” i say to the audience. the crowd boos and throws eggs at me. i walk off the stage in defeat, when suddenly, a few voices speak up behind me:
“no, no. he’s right, actually.”
i turn around, my green orbs lighting up. behind me stand finn wolfhard, noah schnapp, brett gelman, the duffer brothers, and shawn levy.
“he’s right. byler is endgame.”
