Fanesca or Ecuadorian Easter soup again for lunch in a lovely cafe where a kind waitress explained that this traditional dish contains 13 ingredients symbolizing (if I understood correctly) the bounty of life as well as a reminder that fate may prevent good fortune in the coming year.https://www.google.com/search?q=fanesca&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari It is delicious!

The hooded figures are called cucuruchos (spelling?). We were told they are carry overs from Spain and represent penitents. Here is a link explaining the rituals: http://www.metropolitan-touring.com/blog/holy-week-easter-quito-2016

We happened upon a religious procession, complete with marching bands. Note the woman who is carrying a bowl full of lit incense on her head. Later during lunch, we asked a waitress about the procession. I believe she said it had something to do with Saint Benedict.
