Destruction of Ships
The cities of Knossos and Crete had a few things in common. They both lacked city walls, which showed that the city was seemingly peaceful since there was no need for large walls to protect them. They also seemed to lack a large presence of armies. This further proves that there was no need for a volatile presence. They both appeared to thrive from shipping and trade. Around 1628 BCE., the Knossos and most of the Cretan shipping fleet was most likely destroyed by a volcanic eruption. This tragedy caused the Mycenaean civilization to conquer Crete. Stories of Mycenae are told in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and suggest a more militarized community than the previous cities. Other nearby areas were affected around the eastern Mediterranean since they had to find new trade routes and the the Mycenaeans invaded their land.

Death of Caesar
After Julius Caesar had already defeated his rival Pompey and claimed Egypt, he paraded treasure, gold and crowns around town. His death in 44 BCE threw Rome into a civil war between his adopted son and great nephew. His adopted son, Octavian won the battle which made him the most powerful Roman. He used that power to restore the republic and wound up becoming the first emperor. The Roman Republic ended and the Roman Empire began. This brought peace and prosperity to nearby cities but they lost much of their independence. The idea of having one single powerful ruler traveled far beyond Italy.

Chinese Civil Service System
More than 2000 years ago the Chinese invented the world's first civil service system. During the Han Dynasty, the selection of leaders and government employees were no longer simply given to people due to who their families were. Now, exams were given to people who qualified for the position. This allowed big opportunities for families who had always been poor. This was a huge change from how the Chinese used to hand roles to people who were nobles or had a wealthy family. The Chinese Empire was considered more stable than the Roman Empire. Their creation of a permanent government helped their emperor make sure a bureaucracy carried on the emperor's requests. Since the employees were now trained and tested for their roles, the employees ran the government more fair and with better skills. Over time, other areas of Eurasia like Korea and Vietnam saw that China's civil service system worked so well that they adopted the same system to help their government be successful. European countries also followed suite. This new system make a big change in making government fair and work better around the world.
