“[Tork] recently filmed his first TV part since ‘The Monkees,’ playing a character called Surf Guru in an episode [‘Romancing The Tube’] of ‘California Dreams,’ a Saturday morning show on NBC about the adventures of a young rock band. He said the episode is scheduled to be broadcast [in November]. Tork, whose recall is so strong that he can spout lines from a Shakespearean role he played in college, launched into a playful recitation of his new part as an aging surfing seer who imparts ethical wisdom to novice surf-dudes.” - Los Angeles Times, October 20, 1992

been thinking about Micky Dolenz Archive's post that said “Micky was up at Mike and Phyllis’ house recently and during his stay, he got to looking at Mike’s closed circuit television and said how impressed he was. Mike didn’t say anything, but when Micky got into his car to drive away, Mike staggered out with another closed television circuit camera in his arms and gave it as a present to Micky.” - Jackie Richmond, Monkees Monthly (June 1968)
for a solid two weeks now. That's just SO sweet it makes me SICK. also makes me wonder if mike bought multiple just for kicks or bought one for himself AND one that was always a gift for Micky, and pm laid a trap of showing it off to see if it'd be a hit.

I think also just bc I have the New Monkees on the brain, there's something also interesting about you are nothing without the story, yet you are forced to walk the same footsteps. Your feet don't fit in the imprints left in the snow. No one will remember you or cheer for you. You are lost to time, an imitation of yourself and an imitation of those who already imitated themselves. Yet you gain not what you seek.
oughhhhh the way that the beatles and the monkees are parallel entities in the world of sixties rock but they can never be true narrative foils because the beatles chose their lives. they had control, and they were the kings of their story. the monkees were backwardly manhandled into becoming a band in a way that fulfilled all of their dreams of fame but deprived them of all of the joy of being perceived and loved because you are you. because you are not you. you will never be the you that you could have become because you have been replaced by a version of you that you will never own. you are playing yourself and you are playing yourself and you are playing yourself. the story is nothing without you but you are nothing without the story. fuck. the story is nothing without you but you are nothing without the story. do i have to do this all over again

Even knowing that the whole show was written by coked out college kids, that is not helping me get through some of these episodes. They really aired whatever onto tv back then.
#the new monkees#I'm talking about ep 4 btw which should concern everyone#nothing much more to add except that the racism. is bad

God help me I'm making an OC for a show with less than 100 views per episode. Ty @baycitystygian for putting this on my radar I have some very silly ideas. In the mean time, I have my OG Monkees and New Monkees parallels to inevitably change when I get it wrong.
Larry is the Davy
Jared is the Mike
Dino is the Micky
Marty is the Peter
(I kinda think Dino and Jared might be a little interchangeable, and I'm kinda surprised by how down to earth Larry is in show tbh)

New Monkees members

These are the new monkees, they only had one album and are an interesting point in monkees history.
the members are:
Jared Chandler: Guitarist, singer and also has a dog called Poochie

yes I know it’s low quality but still
Marty Ross: pianist and cloudcuckoolander (one of their best episodes is about Marty cloning himself)

Larry Saltis: Gutarist and both a mommas boy and a lover boy, rocks a great mullet.

Dino Kovas: Drummer and not the smartest out of the four

The Show only ran for 13 episodes due to backlash from the Monkees fandom. It is however an interesting show to look at and observe.
