"guess we're stuck," she said, voice low but calm. the air felt heavier now, thick with static and nerves. sliding down to sit in the corner, she added, "hope you're not the panicking type. 'cause one of us has to keep it together."

nova hadn't even been in town for a full hour before she was hit with the kind of existential crisis only a childhood crush could cause. standing in the kitchen, clutching a glass of cheap champagne, she blinked once, then twice, trying to reconcile the memory of their awkward braces-wearing, anime-obsessed high school self with the tall, broad-shouldered, suspiciously hot version currently leaning against the counter like they didn't just casually ruin her peace. "okay, no," she muttered under her breath, stealing another glance. "when did that happen?"

zane didn't even blink, just grinned like he was enjoying every second of it. "you're so violent," he said, voice low and almost amused. "i like it." there was something addicting about the way they always threatened him — sharp words, sharper glare — and it only made him lean in closer, like he wanted to see just how far they'd take it. he swore they could look at him with murder in their eyes and he'd still think it was the hottest thing in the world. hell, maybe especially then.

delilah caught the look — those wide, pleading eyes and the lip bite that made her stomach flip like she'd swallowed too much cotton candy. her voice softened, losing a bit of the teasing edge but none of the warmth. "you collapsing in the middle of my proposal would actually be a huge flex for me. i'd be like, 'yeah, i did that.'" she gave a smug little shrug, then reached over and lightly tapped lily's knuckles where they pressed against her heart. "but if you do cry, just know i'll cry harder. ugly, dramatic tears. the kind that make people hand you tissues and look away out of politeness." she paused, eyes narrowing just slightly in mock challenge. "and i will keep those tissues in my pocket just in case, because i plan ahead for things like this. backup wife duties, you know?" then she leaned back with a smug tilt of her chin, one brow raised like the whole thing was already set in stone. "so we're agreed, right? at forty, we get married — but only if i get to propose with the full emotional arsenal. i want it to ruin every future proposal you ever witness. and maybe a couple strangers' proposals too, just from the sheer secondhand intensity."

"if you're hyping it up and don't meet the expectations that you set for me, of course it's going to be utter despair! i might just collapse right then and there." it takes every ounce of willpower not to burst out in laughter, lily's breathing shallow and quick and her heart pitter-pattering against her ribcage from a feeling she's not well-equipped to handle. her eyes morph into the human equivalent of the pleading emoji as delilah continues to shower her with sweet nothings and by the end of it, lily finds her hands clasped together over her heart and teeth biting gently into her own lower lip. "okay, if that's just a glimpse of what you'll say to me on bended knee, i will reconsider being married to you at forty. please — you've got more pride than can fill this room! i doubt a handful of my tears will make any sort of dent into it."

"you're all i ever think about," the words spilled out before luca could stop them, his voice still rough from the shouting. his chest rose and fell like he'd just run a marathon, eyes wide with the weight of what he'd just admitted. the silence that followed made the room feel heavier than the yelling ever had. his hands, once clenched in frustration, now hung at his sides, useless. "fuck," he muttered, softer this time, like he hadn't meant to say it out loud — but now that it was out there, there was no taking it back.
