Hugging is a great way to hide your face

Okay but Clara’s face when she knows he’s seen her and he starts playing that song. She knows that song. Everyone knows Pretty Woman. When she gets down to him she’s going to confirm he knew what he was doing (Did you see me? When do I not see you?). But you can see the moment she realizes he’s playing Pretty Woman and it’s for her. Clara’s eyes glance around a little in disbelief and then that smiles creeps on to her face. Bam. She just fell a little more in love with The Doctor. 

What really sells this moment is Missy. She gives a little laugh at The Doctor’s sappiness. Remember, she’s just told Clara that Time Lords are essentially above love and romance. They wouldn’t sink so low. But here’s The Doctor proving her oh so wrong by playing a love song for Clara. Missy can’t deny it. She glances at Clara like, “You know that’s for you right?” but also like “Oh you two have got it bad.”

I love this beginning a lot for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s a pretty huge way to reintroduce Missy into the program, and they go out of their way to prove that she hasn’t lost her edge, killing two secret servicemen for no reason. Think Gomez is amazing in the role; she’s easily my favorite interpretation of the Master since Roger Delgado. Everybody else is utter hogwash by comparison. Second, Clara is now totally in control, which is something I am so happy to see. She’s no longer learning from the Doctor, she’s learned and now she can stand in when he’s off doing whatever, and even Kate Stewart knows it. We also had a whole beginning of an episode where the only people in authority were women: Clara, Kate, Missy, and the computer tech woman. Super great, I think.
