THE BIG ANTI-WAR READING LIST
the following list includes the books I've been reading over the last few years that I personally think are brilliant examinations of just why war is so evil.
I have selected for emphasis on the insidious damage that war does to whole communities for generations, with particular focus on genocide and civil war. I have also selected for readability: all of these books could be managed by complete beginners or with minimal extra research.
this is not exhaustive; there will be gaps. I am one person reading as fast as I can. I will likely update this post or make others as I go.
should there be any additions in reblogs or comments, I can only vouch for the ones I myself have read and included.
optional: if you find yourself saying 'I didn't know there was a war there,' read that book first.
NON-FICTION
We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch | RWANDA
examining the before, during, and after of the Rwandan genocide; what genocide does to a country; and the indifference of the West.
Anatomy of a Killing: Life and Death on a Divided Island by Ian Cobain | NORTHERN IRELAND
an incredibly close look at Northern Ireland's civil war and what it means to live in a divided community, told through one murder.
Night by Elie Wiesel | WORLD WAR TWO
his later politics aside, this book is one of the best depictions of what war and genocide do to the soul that I have ever seen.
The Greatest Evil is War by Chris Hedges | VARIOUS
political analysis and breakdown of just why war is so evil, and its hidden costs to everyone involved.
Revenge: A Love Story by Laura Blumenfeld | PALESTINE/ISRAEL
a Jewish woman's search for the Palestinians who almost killed her father, among wider ruminations about tit-for-tat revenge wars and the corrosive nature of revenge itself.
The War is Dead, Long Live the War by Ed Vulliamy | BALKANS
I have some issues with aspects of this book, but overall it's an excellent and damning examination of an incredibly brutal civil war.
Our Bodies, Their Battlefields: War Through the Lives of Women by Christina Lamb | VARIOUS
the history and effects of rape as a weapon of war, and its ongoing effects in war-torn communities.
My Traitor's Heart by Rian Malan | SOUTH AFRICA
an Afrikaner returns to South Africa to consider his own people's role in the violent apartheid regime.
Hiroshima Nagasaki by Paul Ham | WORLD WAR TWO
an intricate examination of America's war crimes against Japan in WWII, showcasing the devastation and the politics behind it.
A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo | VIETNAM
an American soldier's account of the war in Vietnam, showcasing the day to day brutality and ridiculousness of it
The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan | PALESTINE/ISRAEL
the story of two families, one the original Palestinian owners and the other Israeli settlers who now live in the house. a very decent look at the intricacies of the conflict.
War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning by Chris Hedges | VARIOUS
an analysis of war's role in society and its particular grip on society, and why it is so constant, insidious, and apparently inescapable.
Love Thy Neighbor by Peter Maass | BALKANS
another incredibly close look at the Balkans war, with particular focus on the damage neighbour fighting neighbour does.
Season of Blood by Fergal Keane | RWANDA
a war journalist's account of his time travelling through Rwanda immediately after the genocide.
Wounds: A Memoir of War and Love by Fergal Keane | IRELAND
told through the medium of the author's family, this shows the ongoing wounds caused by war in Ireland and what it means to live by your neighbours after civil war.
Where Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer | AFGHANISTAN
a look at the lies and propaganda of the US, through the story of a soldier killed in friendly fire who was appropriated and subject to cover-ups.
The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich | WORLD WAR TWO
an oral history of the Soviet women who fought in WWII. [translated from Russian]
Bad Blood: A Walk Along the Irish Border by Colm TóibÃn | NORTHERN IRELAND
a look at the ongoing civil war in Northern Ireland, told through the medium of its border areas.
Rebel Hearts by Kevin Toolis | NORTHERN IRELAND
an examination of the various attitudes and convictions behind the war in Northern Ireland and the sheer exhaustion of such a war in so small a country.
None of Us Were Like This Before: American Soldiers and Torture by Joshua E S Phillips | VARIOUS
this also had its issues, but it's a great introduction to the violation soldiers suffer when they are brutalised by war and have to live with what they've done.
Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War by Susan Southard | WORLD WAR TWO
the book that made me appreciate the evil of nuclear war for the first time. also examines America's disgusting cover-ups and denials.
Boys in Zinc by Svetlana Alexievich | SOVIET/AFGHAN WAR
an oral history of the devastation, lies, cover-ups, and grief behind the Soviet Union's war with Afghanistan. [translated from Russian]
FICTION
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut | WORLD WAR TWO
the classic sci-fi anti-war treatise. scenes from this book have stayed in my head forever.
Apeirogon by Colum McCann | PALESTINE/ISRAEL
the fictionalised true story of two fathers, one Israeli, one Palestinian, who lose their daughters in seperate events: one killed by a suicide bomber, the other shot by a soldier. this book is beyond description.
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque | WORLD WAR ONE
the classic WWI novel about a German soldier's experiences fighting on the front line.
To Hell With Cronjé by Ingrid Winterbach | SOUTH AFRICA
shows the true evil of war via the total devastation that occurs between three traumatised and grieving men. [translated from Afrikaans]
POETRY
Poems of the Great War edited by Richard Aldington | WORLD WAR ONE
selected poems by the war poets of WWI, again showing devastating brutality with incredible brevity.
The War Poems by Wilfred Owen | WORLD WAR ONE
essential war poetry reading, capturing the terror, hopelessness, and inhumanity of war in beautifully evocative poetry.

a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"
#whenever I go in the stray souls comments and see anyone talking about Zyrak lmao#‘guys let’s not forget the mass murder’ well first of all. I didn’t. second of all. god forbid women do anything
