another thing i can’t stop thinking about: the mercers were an absolute heaven for the entirety of sunset curve. they let the boys do last minute sleepovers when the peters’ house got too loud or luke felt stifled or if bobby’s parents were out yet again. they encouraged alex’s music and the band as a whole, listened to alex and reminded the others that they would listen to them too.

for reggie, luke and bobby, the mercers were one hell of a safe space. sometimes they might’ve felt jealous that alex got to have this family, but they’d be mostly full of relief because they could escape, could ring at alex’s door and the mercers would let them in, no questions asked and with a meal accompanied with stories and laughter at the ready.

and then, suddenly, that all comes crashing down. because the mercers, with all the love they always seemed to have left over to give to the rest of sunset curve, won’t even look at alex anymore. because alex shows up at band practice with shaking hands and a set jaw, looking at his friends as if he expects them to follow in his parents’ footsteps.

suddenly, alex has slept in the studio more times than he’s slept over at any of their houses in their years of friendship, and none of the boys have walked through the front door of the mercer house hold in months. sometimes, reggie or luke will sneak in through the window, but the house is no longer safe. now all that’s left of the paradise of a family home is alex, his bedroom door locked and a pile of extra blankets at the ready.

luke said “your parents were never cool again after you told them you were gay” and i haven’t stopped thinking about what it implies in months.
