Most superheroes I have seen focus greatly on the heroes suffering and personal dilemmas, fighting the bad guys, and getting that applause. And it’s fine. They’re good for entertainment.
But what I love about James Gunn’s Superman movie is how ordinary citizens of this extraordinary universe were given their snippets of characterizations and showed their relationship with the world and their hero. Clark’s very normal parents and his gentle upbringing. Mali dashing to help Superman stand up while the rest of the crowd kind of just stood there. And how his death was so devastating it became so pivotal to the plot. The visual focus on the fear, judgement, and relief from the people when they’re in danger or saved. The panic way they escape running blindly or clinging to the hands of their loved ones. Those who trudged on silently with quiet resignation hugging their treasures to their chest as they evacuate. The visible heartbreak and devastation on their faces when met with the possibility that maybe that bright light they rely on was just a lie. The fear turning into that bright eyed hope in that lady’s face when Superman appeared. Even the guys on Lex’ side showed how they’re clearly delusional and removed from the consequences of their actions until it slapped them in the face was nuanced too. The political scenes and conversations just-wow!
They were so visible and highlighted in the film it added to the world-building and making it feel truly lived in. There’s so much in heart put into the people here. From the main characters to the side characters, and “extras” of this story.
#the one lexcorp guy who wanted to shut down the rift and tried to help mr terrific#and was just pushed aside because yeah asshole you caused this bs#you don't get to save it now that people who actually wanted to do good showed up

Lois Lane rage-baiting Superman, questioning everything, having a conspiracy board presentation to her boss, piloting a spaceship is so kickass and having the “You always wanna see the beauty in everyone that you met and you want to take care of the world. But who’s looking after you? (I will.)” dynamic with Clark Kent and saving his martyr-ass IS SO FIRE. Her character and relationship with Clark had me smiling so goddamn wide.

The Summer Hikaru Died is like. what if you believed you were a disgusting monster for being gay. but then you meet a real monster, and over time you start to believe that even this monster deserves to be safe and happy, and it's the first time you start allowing yourself to believe that maybe you do too. what if I cried one million tears forever

The way Superman depicted complicit civilians is gonna stick with me.
Because usually when you have your villain, usually the civilians working for them are gonna be largely faceless or cowed. And then when the hero crashes the scene, only the armed goons are taken out while said civilians flee to remove any questions.
In here though, you can tell they all enjoy working for Luthor. The technicians in his hq have fun plugging in directions to Ultraman. And those in the base camp wear tropical shirts while listening to music and playing games on their downtime. Nobody is working with rigid confirmity nor are there moral reservations (the only objection shown was when his obsession almost got them killed).
So when Mr. Terrific arrived on the scene, it is actually fitting that he wiped out the workers alongside the armed goons.
Also the way Superman's fellow prisoners not only attempted to snitch on him but actually tried to out snitch each other deserves a whole other analysis.

milly alcock is the most perfect choice to play kara because did you see the mess that she was?? drunk out of her mind??? her comfort pet being the absolute menace that is krypto who also beats her up lovingly???? the tidbit of information we got from superman that she likes partying on other planets????? god. james gunn plucked her out of woman of tomorrow. i can't wait to see my favorite depressed heroic party animal who is the polar opposite of her cousin in her own movie. i can't wait to fight all the incels who compare her to her cousin, who havent picked up a single comic book in their lives, who don't know that she watched her home planet get destroyed and everyone she knows and loves die at the ripe age of 14!!!

"AI uses server farms" oh boy wait until you find out about how google and youtube and twitter and tumblr and facebook and instagram work. & im sure all the digital art that existed pre-generative AI just appeared randomly without any energy cost, sprouted out of the ground i suppose. wow, this pseudoenvironmental way of looking at technology is really good at pointing out when companies you dont like are doing something that companies you do like have been doing much longer

When you ask a french person something like "Hey! Long time no see! How are you?' they might answer "On fait aller" which basically means "We keep things going/moving" which is a kinda polite way to say no this is shit but let's have small talk.
But these days the kids they say "On est là" which means "We're here" like they're not even trying anymore if they woke up today they count it as victory and that's a fucking mood.
