The Valley of Amazement
Amy Tan's The Valley of Amazement is a sweeping, evocative epic of two women's intertwined fates and their search for identity, that moves from the lavish parlors of Shanghai courtesans to the fog-shrouded mountains of a remote Chinese village.
Spanning more than forty years and two continents, The Valley of Amazement resurrects pivotal episodes in history: from the collapse of China's last imperial dynasty, to the rise of the Republic, the explosive growth of lucrative foreign trade and anti-foreign sentiment, to the inner workings of courtesan houses and the lives of the foreign "Shanghailanders" living in the International Settlement, both erased by World War II.
A deeply evocative narrative about the profound connections between mothers and daughters, The Valley of Amazement returns readers to the compelling territory of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. With her characteristic insight and humor, she conjures a story of inherited trauma, desire and deception, and the power and stubbornness of love.
what does it mean to be true to oneself? it is acting in a way that agrees with one's beliefs or values. I believe that you are not true to yourself if you do not like what you are doing in your life, and if you do not feel joy and contentment in what you are doing. For me, I can prove that I am being true to myself by reading stories like books or wattpad because I know that this is where I am happy and this is what I want to do. So these are the insights to prove that Im true to myself.

🖤APO ON THE WALL🖤
This literary piece serves as a time machine that transports us to the Marcos era for free. The poem made us feel like we are on the same era as them. This piece of literature gave verity to the actual situation of the people that time under a dictatorial government of the former President Ferdinand Marcos. We’ve figured out the insights/perspective of two sides of people during the Martial Law. One was the people who were sensible and the other one was the people who were full of innocence or should we say that the two kinds of people during the Martial Law are the Pro and Against Martial Law. The Poem was worth reading it gave us information that we do not know back then.
We’ve got enlightened of what was really happened, why there are pro and anti-Martial Law. People who were anti -Martial Law are those people who were lack of knowledge about it, who suffered a lot back then. We felt sympathetic for the people who’s rights are violated. And can’t even speak for themselves knowing that they will just put their lives in danger. On the other hand, the pro-Martial Law are those people who truly believes in the capabilities of the late President Marcos. Also, they trusted the former president too much because they felt so secured that time because there were less crimes and they believe that what was Marcos doing that time is for their sake, it is for the sake of our country.
The poem made us realized that it is not all about cruelty and such. In fact, in brought progress to our country. We think that the relationship between the father and child showed a symbolic representation of the government and the citizen that time. The father as the government that is strict to his child while the child symbolizes the Filipinos resulting the gap between them.
People would say past is past but the past still needs to be appreciated for it is what made us reach the present. Though mistakes have been made, we can prevent it from happening again. Also, there are a lot of things in the past that are still of use up to this time that we need to be thankful for. The poem serves a reminder about our country’s past. It helps us appreciate more the freedom and democracy that we’re experiencing right now. Apo on the wall is a poem worth reading for.
