GQ : 안 추웠어요? 꽤 오랫동안 밖에 머물며 촬영했는데.

JW : 거뜬합니다. 지치려면 아직 멀었어요.

GQ : 피곤할 법도 한데 늘 웃고 있더라고요. 조금 전 마지막 컷까지도.

JW : 괜찮아요. 설사 피곤하더라도 드러낼 수 없죠. 힘듦이 어디 저뿐이겠어요. 스태프분 모두 한마음으로 열심히 해주시는데 어딜 감히 제가.

GQ : 종원 씨 답네요.

JW : (미소)

GQ : 아까 잠깐 올봄, 생 로랑을 입고 <지큐>에 등장했을 때를 떠올려봤는데, 오늘은 또 다르게 보여요.

JW : 화보를 찍으면서 늘 하는 생각이지만 새롭고 싶어요. 오늘 달리 보셨다면 저는 성공입니다.

GQ : 생 로랑을 입은 이종원을 향한 반응은 늘 뜨겁죠. 그중 대부분은 ‘찰떡’이라는 표현으로 둘의 앙상블을 칭찬하고요. 본인은 어떤가요? 생 로랑과 이종원은 얼마큼 닮았다고 생각해요?

JW : 굉장히요. 제가 원하는 건 ‘자유로움’이에요. 이 지점에 꽤 많은 연결점이 있다고 저는 느껴요. 이를테면 제가 느낀 생 로랑의 자유로움은 이런 거예요. 물론 생 로랑은 남성복과 여성복의 구분이 있지만, 자세히 들여다보면 결국 하나라는 생각이거든요. 남성과 여성의 경계가 없다고 느꼈어요. 그래서 거기에서 오는 자유로움이 있죠. 그러니 생 로랑 안에 어떤 고정된 관념이란 건 존재할 수도 없고요. 패션뿐만 아니라 생 로랑이 많은 아티스트와 협업하고, 또 예술의 영역에서 보여주는 행보들도 굉장히 인상적이에요. 자유롭고요. 이런 부분들이 저와 닮아 있다고 느껴요. 그러니 이런 존재와 함께하는 것. 이건 제게 정말 커다란 자부심이고요. 진심으로 사랑하는 관계예요.

GQ : 종원 씨가 말하는 ‘자유로움’은 어떤 모습이에요?

JW : ‘자유!’라고 해서 무엇이든 내 마음대로 할 수 있는 건 제가 원하는 ‘자유로움’은 아녜요. 저는 제가 ‘진취적으로 가질 수 있는’ 자유로움을 좋아해요. 좀 다르죠? 이를테면 좋아하는 걸 입고, 좋아하는 음식을 먹고, 원하면 언제든 이곳저곳 여행하고. 이런 건 제가 말하는 ‘자유로움’과는 거리가 좀 있어요. 저는 ‘이종원으로서의 자유로움’을 늘 찾아요. 그 과정에서 제가 ‘자유롭다’ 느끼고요.

GQ : ‘진취적’이라는 말 끝에는 어떤 목표가 있죠. 제가 잘 이해했다면, 그럼 ‘이종원의 자유로움’은 원하는 바를 이루어가는 과정 안에서 만들어지겠어요.

JW : 맞아요. 어떤 목적이나 실체가 없는 자유는 좀 허무하죠. 흔적은 남겠지만 글쎄요, 그 과정에서 어떤 영감도, 결과적인 성취감도 얻을 순 없을 것 같아요. 내가 나로서 무언가에 도전하고, 실패하고, 경험하고, 그리하여 결국 무엇이라도 얻고, 이루어낼 수 있다는 건 정말 소중한 거예요. 그럴 수 있는 ‘자유로움’이 전 좋아요.

GQ : 불쑥 묻습니다. 그럼 올해 종원 씨의 진취적 목표 안에는 <지큐>의 ‘MOTY’도 있었나요?(웃음)

JW : 어휴, 생각도 못 했죠. 그래서 <지큐> ‘MOTY’에 선정됐다는 사실만으로도 굉장히 기뻤어요. 나아가 생 로랑과 함께할 수 있어서 두 배로 행복하고요. 올해는 이걸로 됐다, 증명했다? 아무튼 굉장히 감개무량한 오늘입니다.

GQ : 부끄럽겠지만 선정된 이유를 스스로 좀 떠올려보자면요.

JW : (노트를 펼치며) 그렇지 않아도 제가 이 생각을 엄청 많이 해봤어요.

GQ : 노트에 뭘 이렇게 빼곡히 써왔어요? 페이지도 꽤 되는데요?

JW : 오늘 인터뷰 준비하면서 제 생각들을 좀 적어봤거든요.

GQ : 진정성은 말이 아닌 태도로만 알 수 있다더니, 종원 씨를 보니 그 말이 맞구나 싶어요.

JW : 아휴, 아닙니다. 제가 머릿속에서 한번 정리를 해야 말로 나오는 스타일이라서 그래요. 음, 그래서 제가 이 생각을 진짜, 진짜 많이 해봤는데요, 결국 ‘너 올해 잘했어!’, ‘네가 최고야!’라는 의미보단 저를 향한 ‘기대’가 선정의 이유라면 이유였지 않을까 싶어요. 물론 올해 제 활동도 많은 분의 도움으로 빛날 수 있었지만, 이런 타이틀을 주시는 데는 ‘내년이 더 기대되는 사람’이라는 의미도 분명 있을 거라고 생각했거든요. 뭐, 어디까지나 제 생각이지만, 그렇기 때문에 더 감사했고요. 올해 <지큐> ‘MOTY’에 선정됐으니 올해 남아 있는 스케줄은 물론 내년 활동도 더 열심히 해야겠다는 마음가짐도 새삼 다시 솟더라고요.

GQ : 그럼 내년 이종원의 어떤 행보에 우리가 연이어 기대를 걸어보면 좋을까요?

JW : 앞서 말씀드렸던 것처럼 내년에도 이종원의 ‘자유로움’을 찾아가는 여정은 계속될 거예요. 그 안에는 배우로서의 작품 활동도 있고, 제가 흥미로워하는 사진이나 글, 음악 영역에서의 움직임도 있을 거예요. 그래서 꾸준히 더 많이 듣고, 더 많이 찍고, 더 많이 쓰려고 노력 중인데 아직은 계속 진행 중이죠. 아직까진 그럴싸한 계획만 차곡차곡 세워두고 있습니다.(웃음)

GQ : 맞아요, 그 쪽 영역에도 많은 관심을 두고 있죠? 저는 그런 종원 씨를 보면서 ‘이종원이라는 사람은 점점 넓어지고 있구나’라고 언젠가 느꼈어요.

JW : 고맙습니다. 실은 더 넓혀가고 싶어요. 그리고 그걸 증명하고 싶은 마음도 있고요. 아주 솔직히. 그래, 이 친구는 진짜구나, 진심이구나, 관심 이상이구나. 저는 이걸 이 세 카테고리에서 증명하고 싶어요. 음악, 글, 사진.

GQ : 종원 씨가 그것을 대하는 태도나 행보를 떠올려보면 ‘이종원의 증명’이 기대될 수밖에 없고요.

JW : 그런 기대를 이유로 ‘MOTY’에 선정해주신 게 아닌가 하는 짐작, 겨우 짐작 정도 해봤습니다.

GQ : 요즘 이종원을 감싸고 있는 키워드에 대해 물으면 어떤 단어를 말해줄 수 있어요? 여럿 말해줘도 좋아요.

JW : 전 딱 이거 하나요. 책임감. 올해 드라마를 한 편씩 해오면서 책임감에 대한 생각을 정말 많이 하게 됐어요. ‘내가 작품의 원동력이 되어야겠다’ 같은. 배우로서, 동료로서, 현장의 일원으로서 뭐든요. 제가 할 수 있는 역할이라면 정말 잘하고 싶다, 잘 해야겠다는 생각이요. 책임감에 대해 깊이 생각하게 된 지는 1년 정도 된 것 같아요.

GQ : 그 책임감이 부담으로 커지진 않길 바라요.

JW : 처음엔 그랬어요. 잘하고자 하는 부담감이 생각보다 엄청 컸어요. 그런데 그거, 제가 안고 있는다고 없어지는 것도 아니니까. 그래서 행동으로 옮기자 마음먹었죠. 그 책임감을 원동력으로 삼자고요. 그때부터 책임감을 부담이 아닌 제가 할 수 있는 역할들로 나눠서 받아들였어요. 배우로서 주어진 역할 잘 소화하고, 현장의 한 사람으로 분위기도 만들어보고요. 혹여나 누군가 지쳐 보이면 대화도 나눠보고. 막상 해보니까 제가 좋아요, 좋더라고요.

GQ : 깨달음!

JW : 네, 돌아보면 정말 그랬어요. 이 ‘책임감’이라는 거, 극복하거나 소화해내지 못하면 성장이 뭐예요, 바로 다음이 없을 것 같았거든요. 1년 동안 안고 있던 긴 숙제를 조금은 풀어낸 것 같아서 좋아요.

GQ : 종원 씨여서 가능했던 풀이가 아닌가. 압박을 이겨내기란 좀처럼 쉽지 않잖아요. 그게 부담감이라면 더 그렇고요.

JW : 좀 강하게 말하면 극복해야 살 것 같더라고요. 떠올려보면 조금만 더 생각하면 알 것 같은데, 뭔가 보일 것 같은데, 싶었던 그 지점을 ‘배우’라는 직업이 가져다준 것 같아요. 제가 원래 생각이 많은 편이라 고민이 깊은 것도 있지만, 끝에서 답을 줬던 건 늘 ‘배우’라는 직업, ‘배우’로 서 있는 ���장, ‘배우’로 만날 수 있는 사람들이었거든요. 제가 뭔가를 깨닫거나 스스로 답을 얻었던 적은 글쎄요, 적거나 없었던 것 같아요. 저는 늘 도움을 받고 있습니다.

GQ : 12월 31일이 생일이죠? 올해는 어떤 생일을 보낼 것 같나요?

JW : 음, 떠올려보면 장면은 진짜, 가장 단순해요. 분위기는 더 없이 행복하고요. 어쩌면 제게 크리스마스보다 더 특별한 날이기도 해요. 한 해의 마지막 날, 친구들과 생일 파티를 즐길 수 있는 건 정말 행운이잖아요. 한편으론 ‘해피 뉴 이어’를 맞이하며 놀 수 있는 구실이자 그럴싸한 명분이기도 하고요.(웃음) 여느 때처럼 다 같이 모여 앉아 이런저런 이야기를 나눌 것 같아요. 그러다가 꼭 한 명은 이러죠. “오? 너 오늘 생일이잖아! 축하해!” 웃기죠, 생일이라서 다들 모여놓고. 크크크! 아무튼 재밌어요. 한 해의 마지막 날 이렇게 좋아하는 사람들하고 만나서 웃고 떠들 수 있어 행복하고요.

GQ : 12월 31일에 빌어보는 생일 소원은요?

JW : 음, 지금 빌어본다면 지혜로운 사람이 된다면 좋겠다?

GQ : 종원 씨 소원, 뭔가 뻔하지 않을 것 같다고 생각은 했어요.

JW : (미소) 아니 저, 계속 자유롭고 싶어서요. 자유로움에는 왜 책임감도 따르잖아요. 만약 언젠가 그 책임감을 풀어헤쳐야 하는 순간이 온다면 지혜롭게 풀어내고 싶어요. 그래서 바란다면 자유로움과 지혜로움이 함께하는 내년이 됐으면 좋겠다, 그런 소원을 빌고 싶어요.
