Episode 138-Justin Kavanaugh, Sport and Speed Institute- Sniffing Out The B.S.
“I’m a big believer in intent matters the most. We aren’t judged on our intent, we are judged on our actions, but the intention is what’s going to maintain the relationship for a long period of time. Because even if, for some reason, you’re working with somebody and it doesn’t work out, if your intention was only to help or your intention was always positive then you’ll always be able to fall back on the fact that you did right by them. Maybe the end result wasn’t what you wanted but at the end of the day you didn’t screw somebody over.”
Today we are joined by The Sport and Speed Institute’s Justin Kavanaugh to talk training, coaching, business, and filtering through the noise. After a brief intro Coach Kav breaks down how he’s built his filter and how it all started with his family and the brutal honesty of his parents, and has led to how he looks at training, relationships, and business. The conversation then leads to educating yourself and your staff and how being invested in that is exceptionally important to how you handle your athletes. We then discuss what leads to winning, and what he sees as the most important factors in winning. We then get into training and some things that he does to build buy in with athletes ranging from high school to the pros.

My Thoughts Monday #35-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Stay Off Other People’s Lawns
“We gotta remember is there’s a chance, that that person who’s owning or running or working at that business, that gym or whatever they train people out of, they have to sell that to that kid. So, we need to understand that we need to be more open to talk to those people so we know the language they were speaking with those kids before they came to us.”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.html
In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss a situation that we recently had a run in with. When we are looking at the differences between the private sector (business people) and the public sector (colleges-pros-high schools) there is a a bit of tension because some people over step their bounds when making statements about what someone in the other part of the field does, and once you start to come off as threatening people grow animosity towards that part of the profession. The moral of this story is, stay off each others lawn and play nice.

Flashback Friday, The 2015 Seminar-Landon Evans, University of Iowa-Creating an Athlete
“If you’re not working together everything is going to be sub optimal, people are going to be pissed, people are going to be pointing fingers, and people are going to be asking a lot more questions going “why”.”
In 2015 we welcomed back Landon Evans to The Seminar to share with us the direction towards an athlete centered model they built. After a brief intro including his background Landon gets into nuts and bolts of the program that has evolved. This venture starts with where they were as a program in August of 2012 when Landon arrived with a conversation with the track and field staff that started with the sport coaches running their training to Landon “speaking their language” and working his way into the staff and building a relationship with sports medicine. The next step was the formulation of their sport performance group with the entire support staff to help better use their perspectives to formulate better ways of communicating with the coaches. The primary driver of the whole program is communication between the performance staff and the coaching staff with open and honest discussion.
This leads right into how they are designing training. The breakdown of weekly micro cycles and daily training is the driving force behind them moving the program forward. This includes the role of the sport coach and athlete in providing input and having autonomy provided in training. He closes discussing the role of monitoring and how they identify the who gets what and how often.

Episode 137-Nate Harvey, EliteFTS- Paying Our Dues To Get Paid What?
“From the top down it’s messed up, I mean, what other profession do you need to have a masters degree and 2 years experience to start out at 12,000 a year.”
Today we are joined by Nate Harvey of EliteFTS.com to talk about training. Nate starts out by sharing with us how he got into training at a young age, and how EliteFTS had an impact on him as an athlete, and how his voyage as a coach has led him to working for EliteFTS. We then discuss the learning experiences he has had as a coach and the importance of asking questions in all of it. This leads him into what he has been contributing, education wise, and why he’s putting things out in the modes he is. We finish off discussing different “issues” that Nate sees in the industry and how we can maybe move forward in a more positive way.

My Thoughts Monday #34-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Staying In Our Professional Lane
“You do need to stay in your lane because traffic always flows better when people aren’t going in and out of lanes, BUT you have to know what’s going on in those other lanes because if they need help in one of those lanes from you, you need to be able to change lanes and move over there to help them.”

Flashback Friday 2015, Steve Magness-What is Endurance?
“It’s all about how you manipulate the constraints in the workout”
One of the things that we pride ourselves on at The Seminar is to bring in the people who are at the top of the field in their areas. So, with that in mind The 2015 Seminar we were joined by the man who wrote the book on endurance training, Steve Magness. This sixty-three-minute lecture is an evaluation and walk through of how Steve trains his distance athletes, so coaches can have a better understanding of how to develop these qualities in their athletes.
Steve starts out discussing about how we think as people, and how different types of reasoning are important when looking at how they, as distance coaches, look at training, and where the idea of stress fits into those types of reasoning and training.
Steve then breaks down what endurance is. He provides examples of where in science people see endurance and how it fits into the “real coaching world” and training. He then shares what he sees endurance is. This includes the model that he uses to create endurance and how he trains his athletes. His training is built around three questions:
1) What is the training adaptation we are looking for? 2) What stimulus leads to that adaptation? 3) How much is enough?
This leads Steve to break down how all stress plays into how he programs with his athletes, and where these stressors impact what he’s doing with training. Steve breaks down each and every aspect from their training, and the basic science and research backing it. Everything from how and why they cool down in a group and the role in socializing in it and how it impacts recovery and stress, to what workouts work when and for what. He displays how they look at techniques vs fatigue and how programming is affected by that in order to improve endurance and not just reinforce bad technique.
The last 30 minutes of this discussion is a step by step break down of how Steve programs for his athletes. This includes everything from the general “base” to building towards the race, and some different modifications he uses to help increase the stress on the athletes without “breaking” them. He shares with us multiple examples of different programs he has used for different athletes based on how they adapt and events they participate. This includes examples and reasoning of workouts and periodization for two top level performers. He also touches upon how they evaluated and altered the training for three “problem” athlete’s they had and how they altered training based on each individual “problem”. Steve closes by sharing with us how he would implement these principles with team sport athlete’s and how it can simply fit and progress with the “sport science” approach of today.

Episode 136-Andy McCloy, BCI Sport Performance and Fitness- Culture Can Come Organically
“It’s not like I’m a culture expert, I never set out to develop a cool culture. It just kind of organically happened. Where we have some of the best kids in the world, but we will put them in the same group as kids who are not even close to the same type of athlete as they are, and even in their school they’re not as social intertwined with all the cool stuff going on. I think there’s a unique dynamic there where those kids are able to socially level up. The kids that are studs are put in a position where they have to coach and mentor younger people, it’s just a really cool thing.”
Today we are joined by BCI Sport Performance and Fitness owner Andy McCloy to talk about the world of training, After a brief introduction Andy starts discussing the role of his facility in the training and development of young athletes, and how their culture has helped develop these kids in ways that have nothing to do with sports training.  We then start talking about the role of the private market trainers and where they fit in this world of athlete development in conjunction with the athletes teams staff. This includes ways he has reached out to open up those coaches and develop those relationships. This includes him breaking down how the time of the year and other training/responsibilities with other teams drives decisions to help bridge what they’re doing with what the athlete has going on with other programs and practices. Then, for the second half of the discussion Andy shares with us how he sets up his programming. This includes everything from how they find kids who fit in their program, evaluate their athletes, how those evals dictate progressions and regressions, exercise selection, and how they can easily make daily alterations.

My Thoughts Monday #33-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Changing Behavior Is Not A Quick Fix
“When you’re trying to change behavior or something that’s habitual, like eating habits. Eating habits won’t change over night. It’s not like all of a sudden you’re going to talk to an 18-22 year old and you’re going to be like, “alright, so, now you have to get 5 to 7 servings of vegetables every day, OR ELSE, and you’re only going to eat lean protein, OR ELSE. Or else what? Those massive alterations to a habit, to a lifestyle, we all know are consistently unsuccessful. That’s why they’re called eating habits because it’s a habitual type thing.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss some things that we are doing to hopefully improve behaviors of our student athlete’s. All to often we are looking for quick fixes to help get people to do what we are asking, but as we all know quick fixes don’t work. I share some things that we have messed up with and how I could have done better, and hopefully will do better with in the future.

Flashback Friday, The 2015 Seminar, Erik Korem- High-Performance Fact vs Fiction
“As a track and field coach, that is high performance. That’s really all it is. You control the physical, mental, technical tactical, intellectual development of your athlete. It’s all in your control.”
Erik Korem joined us for The 2015 Seminar to discuss what exactly “High Performance” is. Erik starts out sharing with us his voyage that started him as a walk on at Texas A & M, that lead him to being part of building the High-Performance Department at UK. This backstory leads right into what his role was at UK and where he sees it fitting in the entire athlete centered model they developed. He then touches upon changing the culture of the team and how they have attacked that challenge. Erik then breaks down each part of their program. He shares with us their Impact Leadership program including how it was built, and how each factor contributes to their team’s development. Next, he discusses how they hope to build self-management in their athletes based on their program, and how having the athletes follow the idea of earning your monitoring has led to better buy in and greater success. This ties into the idea of fluid periodization and how that impacted the development of their student athletes. Another aspect of their high-performance program is the technical/tactical aspect of football. Erik shares with us how they have changed different aspects of the players days to and training based on the time of the year in order to help the athletes better learn the technical/tactical aspects of the game. He discusses the mental aspect of high performance next, including what they are doing in the realm of sports psychology for their athletes. He finishes off by sharing with us where the program is heading, and what they are hoping to accomplish as the progress forward.

Episode 135-Dr.Bryan Mann-Periodization Doesn’t Need An AED
“If we don’t read the tweets. We don’t read these 140 character things that people are putting out, and we go to the actual original works. We see there’s actual brilliance in there, and if we go with their terminology things start to make sense.”
Today we are joined by Dr. Bryan Mann to confusion he sees with coaches today.  The first thing he discusses is the idea that periodization is dead. Doc breaks down what periodization is and where the confusion is coming form because of vernacular. The main confusion in is what is periodization vs what is programming. Dr. Mann then goes into the role and importance of what the coaches and practitioners who came before us play a role in how we should be looking at all things training because many of the questions we have now, they already answered.

My Thoughts Monday #32-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Using Our Interns Questions To Teach Our Staffs
“Social media is good and it’s bad. I think that a lot of people look at a lot of things that are put out on social media and then they’ll see a video and they’ll say “oh well that’s all that coach whatever his name or her name is does. He or she just has them do, you know, that one minute video I saw on instagram and that’s everything, or they don’t understand how they got there or they don't understand where they’re going.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss some thoughts on internship programs, why ours needed a renovation (spoiler alert it’s because I sucked at running it), how we are looking to improve it, and ways we are hoping to use it to help educate our interns better and share better information to coaches about what we are doing here to, hopefully, drive better discussions.

Flashback Friday, The 2015 Seminar, Andrew Althoff- Baylor Performance: Past, Present, and Future
“The Present, this is where we are at, The Wizard of Oz. What I’m going to show you guys this is what we actually do. No smoke, no mirrors. It’s going to be really clean and simple, and you’re probably going to be underwhelmed, but we try to keep it really simple and really clean don’t do anything fancy and it works. A simple plan executed violently, is better than executed a plan next week that’s perfect.”
youtube
Andrew Althoff provided a great breakdown on how the program at Baylor has been built and where they see it going. After a brief intro Andrew dives right into how and where they started, and what were the corner stones of their program they built off of. This step by step breakdown and self-evaluation starts with day one when the four people on staff had to be patient and count sets and reps to where they are now with 22 people on staff. This answers a question that we had as a staff at the time, and that is, “how is it that these groups go from being small to so massive?” Andrew’s step by step break down includes everything to staff selection and development, programming and how it has progressed from one “team” program to the multiple steps it is today, where and how they built the culture of the program, monitoring and how it evolved with their athletes and coaches, how these tie together and impact how they manage their athletes in every realm from nutrition, to training, to rehab.
This is a fantastic look behind the curtain for everything they've built at Baylor and one that I highly recommend for coaches looking to expand and build their department to learn from the past steps used to build one of the best in the country.

Episode 134-Chris McCormick, Gardner Webb University-Sunshine and Rainbows on Social Media May Be More Clouds and Dirt in Reality
“A lot of the time, you could win a lot of games and there may not be any impact from strength and conditioning. You might see them one time a week in the in season, but they go undefeated in conference play. OR, we know strength coaches that do an awesome job and then they don’t win a lot of games and they’re not part of a team that wins a lot of games.”
Today we are joined by former Gardner-Webb University Director of Athletic Performance Chris McCormick to talk about real world issues that he has seen as a director. Chris starts out by sharing with us what issues that we, as a profession, need to bring to the forefront about what we do. This leads right into us talking about culture and how that, and the players personalities, need to dictate training programs as much as the need for actual measurable results. Chris then shares with us how he uses open discussion with athletes and coaches to help impact what and how they program, along with how they can serve “two masters” by taking both of their incite. We finish discussing the connection between running your weight room like a business and athlete monitoring and how they connect in communication with our departments.

My Thoughts Monday #31-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-What We Say We Do May Corner Us
“So that would be like saying, ‘Team X last year had 7 ACL injuries, Team X this year only had 2. Does that mean that the strength coach did a better job with this team this year or the team last year? What if the team last year, even though they had more than triple the injuries had a better record, won a championship, went far in the tournament?”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share a discussion I had with a coworker on the responsibilities the strength coach carries when it comes to what we are attempting to improve in our athletes. We, as a profession, like to say that we “decrease the risk of injuries”, but today I share why I feel like us saying that is our main objective may put us in a corner when the rubber hits the road when injuries happen.

Today's Throwback Thursday is an awesome video podcast with 2015 Presenter Dr. Ben Peterson. During our discussion Ben dives into monitoring, ways we can make it more efficient, and the things that he looks at when discussing monitoring with teams. Every talk I get to have with him is always enlightening, so I really hope you all enjoy this as much as I did.
