It had been Cassidy’s first Christmas since moving back to Pine River, and she wasn’t quite sure what to expect over the holidays this year. The months that preceded the forthcoming festivities had been ones of big change; graduating from college, moving back home, and resuming training for her forthcoming Olympic bid. Given these events, it stood to reason that the next few weeks would be equally as chaotic. But to her surprise, the old adage had proven to be true: the more things change, the more they stay the same, a fact of which Cassidy was entirely grateful.
Keeping in the spirit of the season, Cassidy and Weston had made their usual Christmas Eve plans: indulge in their favorite cookies, mocking the newest lineup of Hallmark holiday films, and playing a game of Gin Rummy before heading to Christmas Eve dinner. This tradition had been one that included their families in previous years, but with the exception of the latter activity, it would just be the two of them, a fact of which Cassidy was not at all upset about. As much as she loved her family and deeply cared for his, she far preferred the prospect of spending the day with Weston over anybody else.
Not wanting to prolong their day together any longer, Cassidy threw on her green parka, walking the short distance from her home to his, a place she planned to frequent with far more regularity now that the pair of them were settling back into life in Pine River. Stepping within the threshold of the patio, she rang the doorbell, giving four taps on the door — a customary greeting they started as children and maintained as adults, one that signaled it was her at the door, instead of another neighbor, family member, or a random solicitor.
“Hey, you.” A full-beaming smile appearing as he emerged through the doorway, Cassidy’s gaze remained fixed upon his as he ushered her indoors. There was a certain air of expectation present in the air between them, though she was unsure what exactly to make of the sentiment. Breaking apart from him only for a moment, scooping her up in her arms, effectively closing what little space remained between them. “And how is my favorite girl?!” she exclaimed, offering a series of pats before Maple nestled herself within Cassidy’s embrace. A series of soft laughs were soon to follow, both at the animal nestled in her arms and Weston’s apology towards the state of his home. “Westy, I’ve seen you through your paste-eating phase, your drop-crotch pants phase, and even that God-awful frat boy phase. Do you really think a tool belt and a few fabric swatches are going to be the straws that break the camel’s back?”
weston had invited cassidy over to hang out on christmas eve and he was nervous. this wasn’t like him what so ever. he and his best friend had spent almost every holiday together since they had they were five years old. though, this year was different. this was the year that weston was going to tell cass how he felt. he had been trying to tell her since the pair came back from college but every time he found some reason not to tell her. not this time. he needed to tell her and he was determined too. he quickly started to clean up the loose things around his home. he looked around and sighed. he had hoped to have his kitchen renovation done before christmas but work had gotten in the way. he knew there was nothing that he could do about the random materials but pile them in the kitchen. weston’s home was small but cozy. he really liked it but it needed work. which lead to weston doing updates on his house very often. not to long after he checked the time and saw she was going to be here any minute. “ okay. ” he muttered checking to make sure the necklace he wrapped up was still on his table.
as if on cue there was a knock at the door and his puppy had started to bark. “ maple. quiet. ” he spoke as he walked to the door and opened it revealing the blonde. “ hey, cassie. ” he said with a smile on his face while picking up maple so she didn’t jump all over cassidy. “ come on in. ” he said moving out of the way so she could come in. “ uh, sorry about the mess. i thought my kitchen would be done by now… but, you know work. ” he said looking around rubbing his neck. “ though, i do finally have working appliances… so that’s something. ” he added with a nervous chuckle.

Between practice at the gym, classes at the studio, and stopping by the clinic for physical therapy, Cassidy was in desperate need of replenishment, particularly in the form of dinner with Gage. Since arriving back at the house, the pair of them had been exploring their dinner options for what seemed like hours, having considered nearly every restaurant within a 15-mile radius of Pine River. “So long as I have food in my hands in the next 25 minutes, I don’t care where we eat.” Considering the most recent of her sister’s meal proposals, she reached for her phone to browse their menu. Perhaps their efforts of deciding on a meal wouldn’t be quite so futile after all. “Now that you mention it, Samosa and Tandoori Chicken sounds really great right about now. I take it you want your usual, too?”

“Alright, so we’re ordering out for dinner?” she asked, admitting defeat after the two had been debating on their dinner choices for far too long and now were both too hungry to even think about cooking. “I’m in the mood for Indian, but we can always order from two different places.”

HISTORY
[tw: cheating, divorce + financial instability mentions] It was a bright October morning, a soft wind passing through the trees as the prismatic sunlight started to peek over the autumn horizon, when Cassidy Whitfield came into the world. The youngest of the family, her conception had come as a complete surprise to both her parents and older siblings. Her parents believed themselves to have been long past the window of child-bearing years, an opinion that had been more or less confirmed by the family doctor. This consensus and the events that followed fostered a sentiment of dumbfounded delight, a trend that has followed the youngest Whitfield into both her adolescence and adult years. From the earliest points of her recollection, there had been no shortage of love within the Whitfield household, though had been about the only resource available in abundance. In order to meet the needs of their three growing children, this necessitated a two-income household, which fell on the shoulders of Cassidy’s parents, and eventually her siblings. Though this was done with the most honorable and well-meaning of intentions, her parents spent the majority of their time at work, and the impact of their limited presence was profound. Their parents had explored every possible avenue, and there was simply no alternative. Not if there was to be food on the table, clothes on their backs and a roof over their heads. This led to a great deal of contention between the two, ones that resulting in infidelity, separation and eventually divorce. In the absence of their parents, this left Gage and Alex with no choice but to become independent and self-sufficient from very early on. While overwhelming at times, particularly for two who were barely teenagers themselves, this fate was one they wanted their younger sister to avoid, adamantly so, for as long as either of them could help it. In the absence of their parents, Gage and Alex played the roles of both parent and sibling to Cassidy, a fact of which she still remains very aware and infinitely grateful. There are those who get lost in the fire, and those who are forged by it, and Cassidy has always belonged to the latter category. Much of what she has faced in her life has been ideal, but she has always refused to let those barriers stand in her way, or her siblings. The collective circumstances of their lives served as a tough but entirely formidable teacher in many ways, but perhaps nothing has been quite as valuable to her than the lesson of resilience — to adapt, to recover, and to ultimately persevere, particularly when all the odds seemed stacked against you, in an impossibly insurmountable way. The challenges she has faced has made her all the more determined, if for no other reason do right by her siblings and her parents. She has made it a point to make the most of the opportunities in front of her, which included graduating as valedictorian at Riverview, receiving admission to LSU, and becoming a member of the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics National Team, all before the age of 18. Like many others who grew up in Pine River, Cassidy left for a time to pursue greener pastures. Prior to her departure, she had been incredibly reluctant to leave; for a time, she was absolutely insistent on remaining in her hometown, fearing what she would find when leaving the familiarity of all she had ever known. But Gage and Alex would have none of it, and the youngest Whitfield knew these were not idle threats on the part of her older siblings. Resolute in her thinking, Cassidy was certain she would return back home after a semester or two, just as their parents had done when they were young adults. But she was not her parents, both in ways she knew and others she didn’t, and Cassidy was quick to find that she thrived outside of the environments she was so accustomed to. Yet, as much as she had come to cherish the independence and discovery of college years, there had never been any question that Cassidy would return to Virginia after she graduated. A woman of her word, she was settled back into life in Pine River not even a week following graduation. It did her a world of good, being able to experience all that life has to offer, on her own terms. But there truly is no place like home.

A habitually early riser, Cassidy had long since started the events of her day. On this particularly morning, this meant preparing breakfast for Gage, tackling the house chores, and completing her morning run. While her first round of classes at the studio didn't start until later, the maximum age of her students did not exceed mid-toddlerhood, and she would need all the extra energy she could find. This meant a stop at High Grounds was in order, and she wasted no time in heading to her haunt of preference. It wasn't long before she came across a familiar face in the sea of patrons, all of whom seemed equally desperate for their morning coffee. "Not quite sure extra sugar alone is going to cut it for you this morning, bud." Offering a sympathetic grin towards the other, she waved down a barista and placed her usual order before facing him once again. "Rough night in the office, I take it?"

Where: High Grounds Cafe
Garrett had just gotten done with shift. He was exhausted and needed a cup of coffee badly. Before deciding to go home and catch up on some actual sleep, Garrett decided to head into High Grounds Cafe. It was bright and early, well it was raining and he waited in line for his coffee and Garrett took a deep breath. He could easily fall asleep right now with how cozy things felt in here “Any chance you can add extra sugar into that for me please?” He questioned the barista after ordering and than turned to his friend “Hey you, long time no see. Its been a while.”
