Isn't it something when you put a piece in backward and the layout matches in reverse? Wow! That's when you know you got the layout dead on. #woodworking #panel #amazing #madeinmassachusetts #cabinetry #skills https://www.instagram.com/p/CoNf5WiLaPz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

While we are on the subject of old nails- on the left is a modern cut nail and on the right is the antique. The modern one is a 6d and the antique is an 8d look at the physical size difference. The old one would require much less force to drive and splitting is greatly reduced not to mention a more defined head which would allow for much better retention for whatever is being affixed. Plus the revealed head shape is different after it is driven home. This is why I save old nails if possible while disassembly, it's not always economical labor wise but if the work is being gently disassembled there's no extra time in saving them. Just on a side note some of the original automated machines from Tremont Nail previously located in Wareham MA are still in use and being kept running at Acorn Hardware in Norton MA. The manufacturing of cut nails began in the 1790s or so taking the one-by-one hand-forged process away from the local blacksmiths. Much more economical to shear them quickly from the end of a bar of steel. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn2AUsuLblc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I see stuff like this all the time it shows how sloppy people can be even in the past. This headed cut nail is probably 100 - 150 years old. It took some real effort to bring it to this state. Probably 3 - 4 difficult blows. After the first bend It would have taken just as much time to remove and replace plus less effort. Not to mention probably a side blow might have straighten it adequately to drive in. #woodworking #oldfurniture #oldhouses #madeinmassachusetts #oldnails https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnx4h7Trpov/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I love when you step out a layout with dividers and it right the first go and you don't have to tweak it to death. #woodworking #whitepine #widepine #madeinmassachusetts #festooldomino #glueup https://www.instagram.com/p/Cns0Vg5j-FN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Can you spot the color blended repair? Check the second picture. Somebody had done a pretty good repair long before I got this piece to work on, the only thing they missed on was the color it was a pretty good match but it need the character of the whole of the piece. #woodworking #old furniture #furniturerepair #madeinmassachusetts https://www.instagram.com/p/CnYSqnKDG6e/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Check out the amount of wear on the drawer support runners. You can see the new wood scribed in filets on the top edge. 0-3/8" with a curved back end. #antiquefurniture #madeinmassachusetts #antiquecabinet #oldfurniture #antiquerestoration #woodworking https://www.instagram.com/p/CnDunULD5TT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So I haven't posted in a while. This is a particularly interesting very old piece. There have been numerous small repairs. Each is marked by yellow tape. 25 in total. All repairs are reversible by gluing in with age-appropriate animal hide glue. Every original component is handmade for each location, similar parts have different dimensions. I've been able to narrow down the date of the piece. Because of the pencil marks in the first picture. The pencil was invented in 1795 in France and first manufactured in the states here in Massachusetts in Concord by a cabinet maker named William Monroe in 1812. That dates to after 1812 but before 1840 that's when furniture factories began taking over. Of course, if this was a rural country piece it could have been later. #madeinmassachusetts #antiquefurniture #firniturerepair #oldfurniture #woodworking https://www.instagram.com/p/CnDsfRIDIGk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So what do you do with a table repair when it's so old you can't remove the wing for repair? Repair in place. This is an extremely old joined gate leg table. I believe it's chestnut but it could be English oak. The hinges are hand-wrought butterfly and nailed in place, if I was to remove I'd never get the nails to bind back in. It's glued back together with age-appropriate animal hide glue. With two cauls one cut to the shape of the curve and the other to straddle the tongue for the interlocking joint where today would be a rule joint. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ-euXAL8Pn/?utm_medium=tumblr

Well it's 4:30 and we are at 16"! They say we will get snow through midnight. When I open the door for the dog she just stands there looking out, I'll have to make a path for her soon. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZVEIzbpad6/?utm_medium=tumblr

A pair of flanking cupboards for a pair of alcoves in a living room! These will be placed on either side of a fireplace which I had made a mantel for years ago! Picture 2 is the door with it's applied molding. Picture 3 is the extra thick shelves laid up in the press. #Woodworking #cabinetmaking #builtins #fittedfurniture #madeinmassachusetts #custommade #makersmovement https://www.instagram.com/p/CTgcY1CLW_u/?utm_medium=tumblr

Here's a blast from the past! Probably about 86 or so. It's my brother Paul and myself in that order for those who don't know. It's one of the few times since I could grow a beard that I didn't have one. https://www.instagram.com/p/CMapB9eDHhV/?igshid=lw1jimr8fwel

I've been living with this sander for years the way it came from the manufacturer. See the connection to the hose? It had 5 ways to connect different vacuum hoses, none of them quite right. The most promising was the small tube you see the yellow tape around. It was loose (therefore the yellow tape) and it wouldn't allow the hose end into the connection you now see on the sander. That was the 1st to go, this also allowed me to enlarge the intake orifice. Then it got me thinking why am I living with the outer ring which is always in the way. I am very pleased with the modification. Why didn't I do this sooner? #woodworking #sanding #cabinetmaking #makingthingshappen #madeinmassachusetts #modified https://www.instagram.com/p/CMPfxg-DPHI/?igshid=pfveihrmy1bz
