a soft exhale left him, his shoulders relaxing from their seemingly always tensed posture. gestures like these were not exactly common but weren’t unwelcome either. he truly had been enjoying the atmosphere of their division lately.  “  is that why you always look so put together, captain ? “

by now the gaping hole in his chest had mostly healed save from the scarring along the edges of where the void once had been. it had taken both captain kurotsuchi and the fourth division a while to fix and while they couldn’t restore him fully, at least he was still alive.

the war and it’s aftermath had made him realise a lot of things, it had also made him realise he couldn’t sit and wallow in self-pity and hating himself for even thinking about healing his past wounds. he was finally going to start working on himself, for once. it wasn’t going to be easy, having lived so many years in that mindset but he truly wanted to get better. for himself, for his friends. his arm though.. had been a lost cause. now that he had mostly recovered, he wasn’t sure what he was going to do now.

it didn’t hurt exactly, but also doesn’t feel right.

Not all character development is positive. Characters can, and in my opinion, should, develop both negative and positive traits throughout the course of their story. As the story goes, they shouldn’t be perfected, they’re people, not artpieces, and so there shouldn’t be a stage where they’ve improved/changed exclusively for the better, to the point where they have no negative traits at all.

...he certainly hadn’t been expecting any presents today, but appreciated them nonetheless. especially as he nodded a thank you towards her and opened the wrapping with careful fingers. seeing what exactly the other lieutenant had given her made a genuine smile appear on his lips.
